End of story?

vimalg2··on India unveils world’s cheapest tablet computer for $35
Now every Indian adolescent boy can watch 1080p porn in private.

Seriously, I hope this gets put to good use by schools for textbooks too.

Boys will be boys.

vimalg2··on GitHub: Recent Load Balancer Problems (RCA)
Reminds me of the last Github post I'd read about their load-balancer setup from their server guy(2009): http://www.anchor.com.au/blog/2009/10/load-balancing-at-gith...

Willy Tarreau (author of HAproxy) had sparked a nice discussion in the comments section, that time.

vimalg2··on All of life has been utterly, profoundly changed thanks to Facebook...
I did the same for my posts and photos, except it was the final act BEFORE i deleted my Facebook profile 3 months ago.

Its not like i trust Facebook to honour the deletes, but one must try one's best.

vimalg2··on Betty Weissman (mother of edw519) 1930-2011
My condolences. May you find comfort in the good memories.

Last year, I lost my dad. He was 57; He died on his birthday. I miss his quirky sense of humor.

vimalg2··on EveryDNS/EditDNS Nameservers shutting down on Sep 9, 2011
Thanks for the hint. I don't like the way my registrar name.com screws with NXDOMAIN for non-existent subdomain matches.

For those interested, this seems to be the offer link http://www.namecheap.com/products/freedns.aspx

There's also a non-profit http://freedns.afraid.org/ Though, i don't know how reliable they are.

I knew there was something not entirely right with my statement.

Thanks for pointing out what.

vimalg2··on Exercises for a programmer sitting by the PC all day
In my experience, Squats and Deadlifts with a 7' Olympic bar are the best bang for your 'time-bucks'.

I'm also looking at Hindu Squats as the 'do-anywhere'/'rainy day'/'other excuse' general purpose exercise.

vimalg2··on Stanford Fall 2011 - Introduction to Databases
Does anyone know the answer to this?

Essentially, I'd like to know if i should continue waking up with the US East Coast or finally join the regular morning people in India.

Surface tension seems to be modeled too.

Try violently lifting the ball out of placid water.

The water 'sticks' to the ball for a while.

vimalg2··on Free Printed Copies of "Version Control by Example"
I reside in India. My request went through without a hitch (Opera11.50/Linux).

I think this is great idea for a version control book. I work in a dual-vcs environment (Hg, git - Work, personal)

vimalg2··on Hammocks Make Sleep Easier, Deeper
I've been sleeping on a woven dried-grass mat for over 2 years. Best Sleep in my life.

It all started by accident when we moved bachelor-house and a grass mat was the only available sleeping spot left at 2am.

Benefits:

- Insulated from cold floor - never gets too hot or too cold.

- Keeps my spine fit; I've never had a better back in my life.

- Feels really secure - That may have more to do with me being a 250lb fat guy.

- Freedom to toss and turn as much as you want without worrying about whats happening beneath you.

- You can literally crash onto the mat with your day's exhaustion and nothing will break. I've mastered the art of falling into it without breaking bones.

The hammock sounds positively uncomfortable and terrifying from where I'm coming from.

vimalg2··on How Working Out Makes Us Better Entrepreneurs
Doing the fundamental 'compound lifts' at around 80% of your 1RM(1 rep max) for <=5 reps is great for whole body conditioning and gaining functional strength. I'm talking Squats, Deadlifts, and BenchPress with an olympic bar. Freeweights are great at simulating life on a farm and the resulting conditioning. :)

Mark Rippetoe's 'Starting strength" is the bible for beginners to barbell training. Guy called Mehdi has made a 'SS for dummies' -style course, that I currently follow. Its called 'Stronglifts-5x5' and is loved and hated in equal measure by elite lifters.

Saved old PDF manual from his site: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5137/stronglifts-5x5.pdf

I've gained 15kg on my 110kg frame, lost 3 inches from my 50inch gut, and turned my legs to rock in 2 months of sticking to it. I believe the gained muscle weight will be offset once i lose another 10 inches of flab off the torso. Fingers crossed. :)

My 5x5-Squat went from 100lbs to 250lbs in the same period. My ancestors were farmers, i think.

Healthy eating comes naturally, once the the pain in the rear becomes a constant companion; and an effective reminder of why you shouldn't eat crap. I was a fat person who could never understand how to start eating right.

Like everything startupy, just get started doing stuff and push your limits more and more.

vimalg2··on Programming is…
This made my day.

In my day job as a TechnicalLead/PM/sysadmin/perfOptimizer, I do all of the 'non-coding' tasks daily. I guess I shouldn't feel so bad that I do all the non-coding grunt work for my team. They prefer to just write code.

Still. I should create something of my own just to fill in the last 10%. This is #1 reason i've always felt imposter syndrome hanging around real hackers in HN who write code regularly.

Anyone else like me who doesn't quite perfectly fit into the 'hacker in a startup' role?

vimalg2··on Visual Website Optimizer is hiring Engineers in Delhi
Paras is my role model for the growing Indian Startup scene.

# Bootstrapped

# Good challenges at work.

# Pays his engineers well because of Day 1 Cashflow.

I sincerely hope he attracts the best talent; he deserves it.

I cant say the same for the rest of the so-called 'startups' in India. Equity/ownership is unheard of in most places.

Note to Indian 'Founders': The word 'startup' is not an euphemism for 'pays peanuts because we are small'. ;)

vimalg2··on Python now uses Mercurial
Large Hacker userbase.
vimalg2··on Python now uses Mercurial
Git and Hg accomplish essentialy the same thing. The platform support and tool/utility support for Mercurial on windows in important to note.

I decided to choose Mercurial as the VCS for my 'work'. This was a team that had no prior exposure to VC before. And works in a mixed environment. Hg follows the 'one true way' philosophy of Python; so there's just a single command to learn for each task. Plus, Bitbucket's new Free pricing plan for tiny teams convinced me to go with it for online hosting(rather than roll our own hg server over vpn)

Though, If I had to choose a host/vcs for 'my awesome FOSS community project', it would go on Github.

Just done watching it since i found a copy earlier today.

vimalg2··on As Egypt Erupts, Al Jazeera Offers Its News for Free to Other Networks
The live coverage is pretty good.

I've quit watching TV for ages. But oddly, i'm hooked on their coverage for the past 48 hrs, via the live webcast.

It reminds me of the good old BBC (before i found out they practiced censorship)

vimalg2··on Fitness for geeks: my annual review of the Stronglifts 5x5 program
Most "personal trainers" I saw knew nothing about basic, free weight lifts.

This is spot-on where I live. (Kerala, India)

The trainers have no experience with proper form coaching for the basic powerlifting exercises.

All the gyms here promote themselves as 'Bodybuilding gyms'.

All the members want to look like the muscle-bound moviestars from 'Bollywood' (presumably to get 'ze girls' :p)

I'm maybe 1 of 3 people in the whole gym clientele(all male) that even uses the Squat Rack. I'm on Stronglifts 5x5 for a month now and my lifts are definitely improving and so is my flexibility and core 'balance'.

Surprising side-effect: I don't feel 'clumsy' anymore.

And yeah, I get into long winded arguments with the 'trainers' twice a month, about why i don't use the cable machines for 'ze body'.

As an engineer at heart, I like to explain the idea to them something like: "You can pimp your cheap-ass car with all the bling you want, but when it counts, the German engine is going to make the difference. Besides, there's no harm in adding bling after you've got your own finely-tuned German engine under the hood"

Yes, its corny, but it got the message across and got the 'trainers' off my back.

vimalg2··on Great Men Keep Journals
I found 750words.com useful to get me started on the Private Journalling habit. It also helps with brainstorming on the days when i feel like doing that.

The site uses game mechanics to keep you at it, until you no longer need the game mechanics - You just do it everyday without the reminder email or the Badges. They have a one-month challenge as well for those inclined for healthy competition.

750words.com/one_month/accept

Everybody 'wins' as long as they stick it out.

vimalg2··on Forget 200 lines, Red Hat speeds up Linux with 4 lines of code
This actually worked for me on a recent quad-core amd with Ubuntu 10.04. My sunspider bench scores on Google chrome 8.x shot up by 30%, IIRC. This was a couple of weeks ago.

It seemed like the CPU graph seemed to show higher cpu utilization line-trace for the core that was running the benchmarking Chrome process.

That's my layman observation after the patch.
