vimalg2··on "I'm feeling lucky" no more
This still works for those who use the browser search engine functionality in modern browsers:

http://www.google.com/search?rls=en&q=%s+rotten+tomatoes...

I've setup 'rt' as a search engine keyword when i quickly want to look up a movie on Rotten tomatoes.

You don't even have to type in the full movie name. Make google's algorithms sweat for your laziness.

vimalg2··on Fasting & Programming
I don't have the resources to properly estimate and track BF%.

However, i've been tracking my waistline measurement every other day after doing my morning business and fasted. I seem to have lost 2cm since starting 3 weeks ago.

I'm inclined to not take this 'loss' that seriously because the consensus is that IF takes about 3-4 weeks to really start showing results.

On the other hand, i know i'm metabolizing fat; family members have been complaining of my new acetone breath. (ketosis!)

vimalg2··on Fasting & Programming
I've been trying one of the more popular Intermittent fasting protocols -Leangains for 20 days and counting. It was uncomfortable only for the first 3 days.

16-20hr (well-hydrated) fasts ended with a heavy lifting workout and BIG meal at 'breakfast' (6pm or later for me). FAQ: http://examine.com/leangains-faq/

I love it.

Increased alertness, focus, no more mid-day food comas. I'm a fat guy, so my body is probably fat-adapted after a couple weeks of IF.

And i work at my ghetto standing desk from 9 to 5 weekdays.

I can't imagine living any other way now. It's wonderful not to be a slave to food. I see food as just fuel now.

Note: I do take 10g of BCAAs before lifting heavy fasted. There is evidence that they prevent catabolism of muscle.

vimalg2··on FBI pushing for surveillance backdoors on websites
Tip for HN: The 'worldbackupday' promo code still worked in Nov/Dec 2011 when i signed up, and i got 5GB instead of 2GB.

Original promo announce: https://spideroak.com/blog/20110330182326-eric-brian-and-wor...

vimalg2··on FBI pushing for surveillance backdoors on websites
No, the web access feature is opt-in; you have to input your spideroak credentials so that spideroak client code running in their datacenter can decrypt your encrypted datastore and make it available via the web interface.

There is a small perceptible delay when i try to use this(rarely).

That said, their UI is comprehensive feature-wise and not as user friendly as Dropbox UX.

vimalg2··on Try right clicking GitHub's logo
Am i the only person who uses middle click(the scroll wheel button) to open a link in a new tab? This worked for the github icon too; i just checked (Opera 11.61/Linux)
vimalg2··on Facebook uses bgsound to see if you have opened an email
It was just a dns pre-fetch. (I never expected Thunderbird to do that.)

I disabled preFetch in the config editor and my ship's running dry again.

vimalg2··on Facebook uses bgsound to see if you have opened an email
Seems, the author has already documented this.

For those interested: https://grepular.com/DNS_Prefetch_Exposure_on_Thunderbird_an...

vimalg2··on Facebook uses bgsound to see if you have opened an email
Could you link to the fix/bug report? My mozilla-ppa(deb) Thunderbird 10.0.2 leaks like the Titanic after the iceberg.

Gmail does much much better - a counter-intuitive result.

vimalg2··on Protecting Your Mails With GnuPG
Is there a workaround for this? Until then, one should stick to native email clients/Thunderbird for confidential comms.
vimalg2··on Warren Buffett: Why stocks beat gold and bonds
Since Indians are notorious Gold bugs historically, this piece by an Indian Investment Blogger is relevant and illustrates several popular misconceptions with data. Oh, and Graphs. http://www.jagoinvestor.com/2012/01/gold-price-movements-ana...
vimalg2··on Warren Buffett: Why stocks beat gold and bonds
Summary: Gold is Insurance, not Investment(especially after inflation kicks in).

It's probably a good idea to have some % asset allocation for this class of holdings, for the various Doomsday scenarios.

That... and a cellar stocked with lots of tinned food.

vimalg2··on How going to the gym makes you stronger
Is 'ab tightening' done for the obvious aesthetic goal, or is this some assistance exercise routine for heavy lifting?

Google wasn't helpful w.r.t the latter idea.

vimalg2··on How going to the gym makes you stronger
I didn't realize i'd changed the same way until i read your synopsis of your situation. Thanks.

Growing up, effort was given a back seat to my natural intelligence. Also, too much praise early on can trip you up in the RealWorld.

vimalg2··on How going to the gym makes you stronger
Valid point. I'm putting this to the test, Monday evening.
vimalg2··on How going to the gym makes you stronger
Eating 1 hour before workout hasn't worked out for me. I guess digestion time varies from person to person.

Tasting bile when squatting/deadlifting is really unpleasant.

vimalg2··on How going to the gym makes you stronger
>>If you go to the gym and do heavy squats at 6:30pm without eating anything since your lunch at 11:00am you are going to feel like absolute shit afterwards.

This is correct.

Eat a wholesome meal(but don't overeat) 90-120 minutes before you leave for the gym. Those squat numbers aren't going to go up on their own. :)

vimalg2··on How going to the gym makes you stronger
Actually, i work quite the opposite.

My tinker-genes get hyper after an hour of heavy lifting(starting strength 3x/week). I do hardly any cardio most days.

Heavy lifting has a small 30 min downtime after the session. (where you can shower in warm water to freshen up)

But, after that i'm raring to go and won't feel tired until about 4-5 hrs later.

This is my best productivity hack of 2011 - well worth the time spent.

vimalg2··on Salary Negotiation: Make More Money, Be More Valued
Thanks Patrick. This was a long time coming.

I can tell you've had quite a personal journey about this topic.

vimalg2··on Focus on building 10x teams, not on hiring 10x developers
Thanks for the tip.

Do you mean this ? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Team_Role_Inventories#Belbin_Te...

vimalg2··on Focus on building 10x teams, not on hiring 10x developers
Very interesting post. I found i could instantly relate to it, instead of all the posts about uberhacker-only teams. (I haven't worked in such an environment yet)

Peopleware matters.

I find myself fitting into The Teacher and The Anti-Pinocchio roles a lot, wherever i work. And i try hard to be The Heart.

I have great respect for The Hustler. A great team needs them all.

vimalg2··on Linux Mint 12 Released - The Peacemaker?
Some of the mirrors had it , then (pulled it?).

Here's a US mirror that has the Final isos now: http://mirror.yellowfiber.net/linuxmint/stable/12/

For the rest of the countries, try tweaking the URLs similar to the above and you may get lucky.

vimalg2··on Icinga - a Re-architected Nagios fork
I'm guessing this is their first HN slam.

I submitted it because i found very few mentions of it via HN-search.

vimalg2··on Bill Nguyen: The Boy In The Bubble
After reading, I feel motivated to re-read my copy of 'Influence' by Robert Cialdini. Bill Nguyen was really really good at one thing.

Here is a guy who thrives on persuading people. I think the average founder could always use a little more of the same skillset.

vimalg2··on The Real Reason Italy Sucks at the Startup Game
I'm Indian and the first thing i did was look at that bar chart about people's attitudes towards 'fate'.

No surprise to me, India ranks highest on the fatalism curve - 80% of us believe we are helpless to choose our path to success.

...which is fine. But when i see kids here, from the next generation as well, who somehow have this attitude, it breaks my heart.

For a start, i'd advocate teaching Critical thinking skills in our schools.

vimalg2··on Richard Stallman on Steve Jobs: correction
Are you talking about hate speech or hate crimes?

Only one deserves punishment.

vimalg2··on Richard Stallman on Steve Jobs: correction
Yes. RMS may take rather unrealistic positions in today's capitalist society, but he's the only one around who has internalized Ben Franklin's famous quote:

"Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."

vimalg2··on Richard Stallman on Steve Jobs: correction
RMS would still piss certain people off, if he'd instead said : "I am not the least bit upset SJ is gone. I've always fundamentally disagreed with the movements he spearheaded, to take away the user's freedom."

RMS is supposedly autistic, and the lack of empathy is likely a result of that.

Taking that into account, there hardly seems cause for all this fuss.

Move on.

vimalg2··on Backify Offers 512 GB Free Online Backup Storage
SpiderOak does all of the above. Your data is encrypted end-to-end.

https://spideroak.com/engineering_matters

They cannot peek.

Also, my favourite feature: The client allows you to mirror the encrypted blocks to a remote FTP/SFTP target owned by you.

There's your N+1.

Talk about a zero-trust environment!

vimalg2··on Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot) released
I've been sticking to 10.04 LTS for quite some time.

I'm finally starting to appreciate the old adage 'If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it'.

LTS works ultra-reliably.
