victorhooi··on Claude Opus 5.5
I think you're defending the wrong thing here. Claude isn't a English lit major writing a treatise on post-modernist allegories. In this context, it's primarily being used to churn out source code files, which are literal instructions for a computer to follow.

People aren't objecting to the use of obscure phrases, or flowery English phrases in itself. The issue is where Claude uses it out of place, or in the wrong context, or just plain overuses it.

It would be the equivalent of a young child learning the phrase "Venn diagram" - then using that identical phrase in every single subsequent interaction with others. Cute at first...but very grating after the n-th time.

You used the phrase "baby with the bath water. What if you started using that same phrase in every single HN post you made after this? People would notice very soon.

That's how it is with "load-bearing", or "plainly".

The other issue is where Claude takes a metaphor, and try to contort it to fit all sorts of absurd situations. What if I said "baby with the bath water" could also be used in place of "load-bearing". So every time you imagine Claude saying "load bearing", replace it with "baby with the bath water".

I think it's less mad - and more pointing out the obvious elephant in the room.

1. It's just bad communication, full stop - just look at the comments here, even people allegedly in support of Anthropic are all arguing over what the phrase is even meant to mean.

2. It's flowery language and oddly out of place - which yes, can be triggering for people who have to deal with Claude doing this as well.

Claude seems overly apt to reach for "coinages", or neologism (yes, aha, I learnt that phrase, after spending time dealing with Claude...). It will create some made-up phrase to describe an otherwise dry, scientific CS concept, and nobody seems to know why. Surely it can't be user-focus groups?

So it would be peak-AI if somehow, the Anthropic communications team was also using Claude to author these blog posts, about how they were "pacing the frontier" - which either means they're betting big on AI, and going at it faster than OpenAI...or maybe it means they need to slow down releases, because it's too buggy...or maybe it means they're worried about regulatory capture? I honestly have no idea.

It's like the whole "Advancing Our Amazing Bet" corporate-speak from my old bosses - maybe they were trying to soften the blow or something, or be nice, but it ended up just confusing the heck out of everybody.. (Spoiler alert - the phrase actually meant they were shutting the whole thing down)

victorhooi··on Claude Opus 5.5
The irony here is that it's actually the opposite of what you understood....

I know you said it sounds poetic...but your comment reinforced the parent's point - that this sort of flowery LLM-ish speech is just bad communication.

It would be equivalent of my taking say random quotes from, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and trying to use it to explain to my boss why I didn't finish the TPS reports last night.

Or quoting Pablo Neruda, into a report about wheat futures pricing this week, and how it's like a voyage with waters and stars...(no I'm not going to quote the original Spanish, I'd simply mangle it).

(To be clear - this isn't a dig at you, as a non-native speaker - I'm simply pointing out that this sort of AI phrasing is often counterproductive).

victorhooi··on QuadRF can spot drones and see WiFi through my wall
This does look cool - but I suspect most of the stuff I'd use it with is 2.4 Ghz (i.e. ISM band) - IOT devices, wireless keyboard/mouse, wireless cameras, drones etc

Is a 2.4Ghz version mostly about the larger physical size? Or are there other technical limitations to overcome as well?

And cost wise - would it be 2x this version ($499) - or higher?

victorhooi··on Ultrasonic Chef's Knife
Hmm, that seems a bit snarky =(.

I don't think the parent was bragging about the salary thing - a lot of the other comments here are mentioning the price (which to be fair, is definitely in the expensive gadgets/toys bucket...) so he/she (s/g) is saying - he's just a home cook, he's got semi-decent knife skills, and he's in a position that he can afford this.

And let's be honest, tech geeks are basically the target demographic for this sort of thing - as are half the gadgets on Kickstarter. Yes - we can talk all we want about carbon credits, and eWaste, and doing things the old fashioned homestead way when men were men, took cholera and dysentry on the chin, and knew how to use a whetstone, or to whistle (I can do one of those things...)...

I am sorely tempted, and I'm an amateur cook at best...if even that. And truthfully, this probably won't make my food better than a $15 IKEA knife (assuming I just replace those regularly). But it may make the process more enjoyable. And the tech is cool...

victorhooi··on Ultrasonic Chef's Knife
Oh wow - would love to know what you got for sharpening, or what you'd suggest for the home cook?

When you say ugly/clunky - I'm guessing you mean it's a bit heavier, or the weight will be off compared to a good high-end chef's knife? (I don't have anything like that, haha).

I did note on their FAQ they say to never activate the blade whilst sharpening:

https://seattleultrasonics-ceizljlxnpt.gorgias.help/en-US/ho...

> Do not activate the ultrasonics during sharpening - this can damage both the blade and your sharpening stones, as the ultrasonic movement is too aggressive and not evenly distributed across the entire cutting edge. Also, reshaping the blade to a different belly curvature or tip shape can cause it to fall out of tune, so avoid removing more material than you would during normal sharpening.

victorhooi··on Ultrasonic Chef's Knife
This looks really cool!

I was just curious about two things - seems there might be some knife aficionados or experts here!

1. Sharpening - As a home cook, who doesn't know a lot about knives/sharpening - how hard would this be to maintain? Would it be plausible to get some basic home sharpening gear, and maintain this myself? Or should I take it to a professional knife sharpener - and if so, how do I even know if they're a good one, and won't damage the blade, or perhaps are good, but somehow get the blade out of "tune" etc?

2. Safety wise - is there anything at all to be concerned about with ultrasonic 40Khz blades? Should I be wearing any hearing protection when using this? (Context - I have hearing loss in both ears, and wear hearing aids - keen to preserve my remaining hearing, and am understandably cautious about this kind of thing for my family and me).

victorhooi··on Fixing a loud PSU fan without dying
I think perhaps you might have not read the entire article? =)

The danger isn't so much in the fan, but in that the fan is INSIDE OF A COMPUTER PSU. There are mains AC voltages (220V, or 110V) here, and even if unplugged (which is should be) there are also capacitors in there, which you should definitely be cautious of.

I've worked in DC (datacenters) before - and I've seen people accidentally drop screws into power supplies...and well, electrical arc, boom, you can guess the rest. And in a domestic situation, a 4" cooling fan (yes, I know, larger) stopped suddenly due to a motor issue, and send flying bits of plastic shrapnel around (always wear eye protection!).

This isn't quite like tinkering with your little Arduino board, or Raspberry Pi.

If you did read the article =(.... I think that's a bit arrogant and disingenuous to make fun of people saying you should be cautious around things that are connected to AC mains, or that involve capacitors.

victorhooi··on Gene therapy restored hearing in deaf patients
See - I don't get this. I've heard people mention it about the deaf community, but it just doesn't make sense to me - perhaps I'm missing something.

I have congenital hearing loss in both ears, and wear hearing aids. I don't know ASL (at least not well enough to use), as I am more or less able to function with hearing aids, with the usual caveats - background noise, group settings, still quite reliant on lip-reading and context to fill in gaps etc.

Within my financial means, I would glad pay to wave a magic wand and restore my ears to "normal". This gene therapy sounds interesting, but I'm not sure if that mutation is the cause of my hearing loss. And I'm always wary of side-effects, haha.

I do see my hearing loss as a disability - and no matter how much you try to dress it up, or with "don't diss my dis-ability" PR campaigns - it still does suck every day. I'm not saying you should discriminate against people for their disability - and I've steadfastly advocated for increased accessibility to level the playing field (e.g. in my workplace, at church, in the community). But I'm not exactly Matt Murdoch or Echo here.

And yes, I'm also "neuro-diverse" (starts with A) - and yes, I guess you could argue there's advantages there, under specific circumstances. But there's most definitely a penalty there.

victorhooi··on Design for 3D-Printing
The article states it is specifically geared towards FDM (i.e. filament) 3D printers.

I wonder if anybody with more experience knows how much of this would overlap with SLA (i.e. resin-style) 3D printers.

For example, there's rough guidelines like, overhangs are less of an issue with SLA - and the Z-height is ultimately what most affects print-time, but would be great to see something more in-depth here, with some engineering behind it.

Or if there's similarly in-depth articles for resin 3D printers?

victorhooi··on Volkswagen reintroducing physical controls for vital functions
Car windows are probably harder to break than you think...lol. Also - consider the situation where the car is in, or partially in water, and pressure differentials.

(There was actually another HN thread about this recently - https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39691780).

I keep a Resqme in the car glovebox - my other half used to do a lot of interstate driving, and I was always worried she'd be trapped in the car. The Resqme has both a seat-belt cutter, and also a centre-punch for easily breaking the side windows.

victorhooi··on DuPont and “DuPont” connectors, and how to crimp them properly
Wait - are you saying the Ideal-Tek PCSA-4N is good, right? Now you've piqued my interest.

Is this suitable for a single person at home, to hold a PCB in place whilst you solder components to it? Worth getting it for home use?

You mentioned Lindstrom and Piergiacomi for flush cutters - I know Ideal-Tek makes flush cutters as well (in fact I think I have some somewhere...), and so does Knipex. But in your experience, are the Lindstrom and Piergiacomi vastly superior?

victorhooi··on From Gatsby gridlock to Astro bliss: my personal site redesign
I'm probably a bit out of the loop her - but you referenced Gatsby's collapse?

Did something happen to them, in the community or project?

Googling, I saw that they were acquired by Netlify in early 2023 - but not much concrete beyond that?

victorhooi··on Daylight Computer – New 60fps e-paper tablet
I’m definitely interested in this - but I’m wondering about software updates.

It mentions it runs Android 13 - which was released based in 2022. Android 15 is meant to be released soon.

Do you know if it’s possible to update this to more modern Android releases? How involved is it?

Or would it be tied to the older Android release for some time?

victorhooi··on Sunlight and Vitamin D (2013)
I think the parent may be referring to the indigenous Australian (i.e. Aboriginal people) - who are basically black-skinned, and have been here for a lot longer than other races.

(Even they came to Australia from South East Asia originally - tens of thousands of years ago - back when there was a land-bridge).

victorhooi··on Ceph: A Journey to 1 TiB/s
I have some experience with Ceph, both for work, and with homelab-y stuff.

First, bear in mind that Ceph is a distributed storage system - so the idea is that you will have multiple nodes.

For learning, you can definitely virtualise it all on a single box - but you'll have a better time with discrete physical machines.

Also, Ceph does prefer physical access to disks (similar to ZFS).

And you do need decent networking connectivity - I think that's the main thing people think of, when they think of high hardware requirements for Ceph. Ideally 10Gbe at the minimum - although more if you want higher performance - there can be a lot of network traffic, particularly with things like backfill. (25Gbps if you can find that gear cheap for homelab - 50Gbps is a technological dead-end. 100Gbps works well).

But honestly, for a homelab, a cheap mini PC or NUC with 10Gbe will work fine, and you should get acceptable performance, and it'll be good for learning.

You can install Ceph directly on bare-metal, or if you want to do the homelab k8s route, you can use Rook (https://rook.io/).

Hope this helps, and good luck! Let me know if you have any other questions.

victorhooi··on Mounting your iPhone on your motorcycle can damage its camera (2022)
Does anybody know if this would affect bicycles as well?

I have a phone mount on my roadbike handlecars - one of the Quadlock ones - does anybody know if the road vibrations from cycling can cause as much damage as the motorbike?

If anything...I would have thought a fairly stiff road bike would have more vibrations than a motorbike?

Thanks for the tip.

Do you have any ideas on what search terms to use please, to look for these?

And they have to be the ones from Solum, or Samsung, right? Is there a specific product range, that we could use as search keywords?

victorhooi··on Making It Legal to Play Outside: “Reasonable Childhood Independence” Bills
I think you're glossing over a few things here...

Firstly, many societies around the world would consider 9 yo to be mature enough to do things like....go to the shops, use a telephone, go to a friends place to play, or look after a pet. Or in this...stay at home?

I'm not sure if it's specifically an American thing (and seemingly by extension, Australia, since there's so much cultural osmosis), but it does feel like we are infantilising our children, right into their young adulthood. Apparently it's normal now for somebody in their 20's to continue living with their parents, and have their parents do things like cook all their meals for them, do their laundry, etc

Secondly, what you're suggesting specifically targets poorer, or possibly Black people - I'm not sure if that's your intent? However, you're basically saying it's not OK to be poor, and not be able to afford things like a live-in nanny, or daycare (if available).

victorhooi··on Tell HN: IPv6-only still pretty much unusable
I'm dealing with this now as well..=(

Do you happen to have a reference from the RFC, about it being against spec to hand out just a /64?

victorhooi··on Virtual Crash Accident Reconstruction Software
This looks interesting...

Does anybody know if there's any open-source software in this field? Or any attempts to develop a community or similar software there?

victorhooi··on I spent a year designing a low profile, minimal mechanical keyboard
Like the look of it.

Two quick questions:

1. The specs mention Kailh Red switches (linear) - is there any chance this would be offered in other types of Kailh switches? (e.g. Blue etc.) 2. These look like custom keycaps - does this mean that standard mechanical keyboard keycaps won't work on it? Or do you know if the keycaps on these are interchangeable? If not, would you offer them with say, blank keycaps?

victorhooi··on Logitech MX Mechanical Keyboard
Does anybody know if this Logitech keyboard supports custom keycaps?

I'm sorely tempted to replace my Keychron K6 with it * Battery life is apparently 10 months - the Keychron K6 I'm lucky to get a week or so (yes, this is with backlight off) * Keychron doesn't report battery life over BT * Keychron - takes 3-4 seconds to wake from sleep each time, which gets super annoying

Of course, I do love the Cherry MX Greens - wonder how the Clicky in the Logitech compares.

And yes I want my custom Granite keycaps on this - but it's some low-profile version - so will it work?

victorhooi··on Logitech MX Mechanical Keyboard
Whilst I get your point - you might want to tone down the rhetoric slightly...

I'm a mechanical keyboard aficionado - I've gone through everything from Das, to Annes, to WhiteFoxes, to Keychrons. (Yes, I did solder some of those...lol).

My current daily driver is a Keychron K6 - but even I am seriously considering this Logitech.

The spec sheet promises a battery life of 10 months (no backlight) - the Keychron K6 is fine - except that the battery life sucks, and it takes 3-4 seconds to wake up from sleep every time.

I'm looking for a QMK wireless keyboard, but they're thin on the ground - and I suspect the battery life would still be terrible.

At the end of the day, companies like Logitech (or Apple) have the time and engineering nous to test things, and have them Just Work. Things like decent battery life, or having fast wake-from-sleep would probably be handled by their engineering teams.

victorhooi··on Speed boost achievement unlocked on Docker Desktop 4.6 for Mac
It's not necessarily because people are serving their production workloads from macOS systems.

However, they develop on them - and it makes sense to make those environments (and the processes) similar to your actual production setup. So if your applications code gets compiled, and deployed as part of the Docker image - then ideally when you spin up a dev environment, it should follow the same process.

victorhooi··on Reasons Kubernetes is so complex

victorhooi··on HCA posts stories of anti-vaxxers dying, scaring fence-sitters into the shot
Right, and imagine if somebody invented a simple injection that reduced road deaths...how many people do you think would be interested in this?

Do you have any idea how many millions of dollars car companies invest every year into making cars marginally safer?

Even if you somehow assume everybody working at a car company is somehow immoral - imagine the profit motive if they invented a car that reduced your risk of dying by 75%? People would be clamouring to license the technology.

Yes, we all want to drive, but if you could let us still drive, and be safer...

The amount of crazy conspiracy theories around COVID, and how it's about government control, or big pharma is mind-boggling.

It's a pandemic - we've had them before, except this time, we have science, and invested billions of dollars into research to get a vaccine. Sure, it's not 100% effective, but by this point in time, we have a fairly good idea that it's benefits heavily outweigh the risks across the population.

And the vaccine is free...

victorhooi··on Governor vows criminal prosecution of reporter who found flaw in state website
Yes, but "weev" is also a well-renowned internet "troll". Basically - he appears to take joy out of denigrating, humiliating, insulting and doxxing other people.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weev

He's also a neo-Nazi and white supremacist. I do believe in free speech, but some of the things he does seem to take it way too far.

And he famously doxed Kathy Sierra, a female technical writer who created the Head First series. I actually quite like some of the books in the series, and it's incredibly sad to hear incidents like this which actively discourage females in tech.

I suspect there's more to the AT&T incident than just, oh, I found a flaw, let me responsible report this to the relevant parties in responsible disclosure.
