vict00ms··on Dark Sky iOS app will no longer work from Dec 31
Lala was great, you could upload your own MP3s and stream them or you could purchase them directly (for download or streaming as a "web song"). If you were a registered member, you could listen to any album/song once at no cost (not just on their platform, embedded in web sites too).
vict00ms··on Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” synth sounds
Hearing that "cello" sample that Bush used made me feel like looking into a marble quarry and trying to see sculptures waiting to be released from the rocks.
vict00ms··on My students cheated... a lot
When I was in high school, a bunch of AP students cheated off the valedictorian our senior year...when it was exposed, they hushed everything up rather than allowing a scandal that would ruin the school's and the students' reputations (some of which were bound for Ivy League schools in a few months' time).

Sometimes, the entire community will protect its cheaters.

vict00ms··on Cannabis use produces persistent cognitive impairments: meta review
There are definitely places where "spliffs" (weed+tobacco) are the norm, but it's definitely atypical.
vict00ms··on Internet addiction and the habit of book reading
>I know the games I like; they are all old and I know I love them.

>I simply can't concentrate on the games I like for more than 15 minutes.

Maybe you should try playing something different. A new challenge might encourage you to concentrate more and/or build neuroplasticity, and you could find some satisfaction there.

vict00ms··on The Framework is the most exciting laptop I've used
Most modern mixers support toslink (and even coaxial sometimes), especially ones that are specifically oriented towards timecode control.
vict00ms··on Japan's government plans to encourage 4-day workweek, but experts split
I'm 4th generation Japanese-American, and in no way whatsoever qualified to answer your question, but I'll gladly do it nonetheless: they prioritize the collective over the individual.
vict00ms··on Manicure robot in San Francisco is now painting nails in 10 minutes for just $8
No, a nail technician is a job that sustains many immigrant communities. They may be faceless to you but they're real people getting pushed out of jobs. This "automation device" isn't anything like a smartphone.
vict00ms··on Neural networks emulate any guitar pedal for $120
>sure, but can it model my amp?

I believe you can already create your own impulse responses (from your personal amps).

vict00ms··on Hockey goalies are too big now
I feel the same. I watched (and enjoyed) lots of college basketball when I had roommates that were heavily invested in games' outcomes but never again since.
vict00ms··on Sir Kazuo Ishiguro warns of young authors self-censoring out of 'fear'
This was just posted 38min ago.
vict00ms··on Squatters issue death threats to archaeologist who discovered Caral
The armed occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge is a pretty clear-cut example.
vict00ms··on The Mayron Cole Piano Method is now free
I taught myself how to flatpick on guitar. Three years later, I found out that I held the plectrum incorrectly. Though I've learned the proper way (and will switch to it in order to tremolo a la Dick Dale), twenty-five years later I still can't shake it.
vict00ms··on Good Books for a Lousy Year
I'm a big fan of King and as such implore you to recommend specific works: nobody should read 'Rose Madder' on accident (or even as punishment, I don't care the transgression).

Have you read Robert Jordan's 'Conan' books? I just reread them (after finally getting around to reading Sanderson's final two books of Jordan's 'Wheel of Time' series) and they're more fun than I'd remembered!

vict00ms··on Good Books for a Lousy Year
'REAMDE' by Neil Stephenson. It's about a fictional MMORPG and really fun.
vict00ms··on Making Playstation 1 Modchips (2018)
I had a friend in undergrad that was moving a pretty significant number of modded (original) XBoxes at a pretty significant markup...but it turned out that he also offered a particular service that was largely driving sales: a larger hard drive filled with ripped DVDs from the 'Red Light District' adult film studio.
vict00ms··on Zoom lied to users about end-to-end encryption for years, FTC says
I don't think the example vindicates you in the manner you believe. The damages would surely exceed the missing wheels if resolved in the courtroom.
vict00ms··on The Corporatization of Nursing Homes
Your response was dismissive of the possibility that families could throw a family member into a nursing home to raid their savings, etc. I'm telling you that this happens and providing a real-world example from my own life, just like you did.

The vast majority of people do NOT have loving, decent families. You are lucky to have that world view but you should consider the possibility that it is quite flawed.

vict00ms··on The Corporatization of Nursing Homes
> Not sure what you mean by this

My grandmother was in good health but my mother didn't want to assist her (Medicare-provided) caretaker anymore and wanted her assets. She and my stepfather manufactured a scenario in which she took a fall, then stuck her in a nursing home and she died within a year. My mother knew the rules and got what she wanted without any repercussions (beyond losing contact with her only son).

vict00ms··on 'Zoom towns' are exploding in the West
I don't know people who have done this but I know people that are impacted by people that have (e.g. small towns along the Hudson river being inundated by people fleeing NYC).
vict00ms··on Analyzing the Design of Unusual Japanese Butter Tableware
I'm almost certain that salt was never added to butter as a preservative and your "cleaner" method theory is unsound: there is nothing about churning that would accidentally introduce salt. Salted butter is probably best thought of as a subset of compound butters.

Salted butter was a popular spread in restaurants and consumers wanted it in their homes.

vict00ms··on Eddie Van Halen has died
Gilmour used to do the same: record multiple solos, pick the best parts, re-record.
vict00ms··on Eddie Van Halen has died
Your pedantry is outdated: there are Serato-compatible decks that have MIDI pads built into them, not everything is trying to mimic the SL-1200s aesthetic these days.
vict00ms··on Amazon turned off customer’s Kindle account, blocking her from her books (2012)
I use my Kobo like it's "dumb"...but I generally have to use Calibre to convert epub to kpub for it to format right on the "page".
vict00ms··on A floppy-disk Walkman using a Raspberry Pi
I bought a PS2 at one point because it had an optical audio out (and DVD player), gaming was secondary.
vict00ms··on A floppy-disk Walkman using a Raspberry Pi
They released a 1gb "Hi-MD" disc in the same form factor in 2004 that never took off.
vict00ms··on Wellbeing levels fell with the pandemic but improved under lockdown, data shows
I don't believe this is a 'no true Scotsman' fallacy: the person was replying to someone claiming lockdowns were equivalent to incarceration, but the US-style "lockdown" was much, much less severe than that.
vict00ms··on Why aren’t we talking more about airborne transmission?
> Most big HVAC systems have this ability.

This is patently untrue.

vict00ms··on On Trouser Pockets
"Determine" isn't synonymous with "dictate". No cabalistic intrigue required.
vict00ms··on On Trouser Pockets
I disagree, cargo pants were a fashion choice eschewed by most "laborers" at the time because they were made out of materials that wouldn't stand up to heavy use.
