vichu··on Mozilla: A free and open internet shouldn't come at the expense of privacy
This is such corporate double speak. It's not clear from the title, but this is Mozilla announcing its new advertising network and its pivot into advertising.

This is sad, sad news.

vichu··on My dad and I replaced a 100MB HDD with a 1GB HDD for $100. When did this happen?
Looking at this chart[0], my guess would be around 1997.

vichu··on A cheap, generic drug became a darling of longevity enthusiasts
I’m surprised this article wasn’t about Metformin, something gwern has written about[0] and has some popularity in the entire nootropic circle of people that I know.

vichu··on Marcus Aurelius: The Man Who Solved the Universe [video]
This channel has some of the best usage of AI art that I’ve seen. I wouldn’t consider the background art of this kind of content core, but it is important. I’m very impressed by what is generated and how well it goes along with what he talks about.
vichu··on Titled Tuesday Cheating
Where have I seen this UI before? :)
vichu··on Marin Mersenne on the Consolation of Sad Music
"What came first, the music or the misery? Did I listen to music because I was miserable? Or was I miserable because I listened to music? Do all those records turn you into a melancholy person?"

"People worry about kids playing with guns, and teenagers watching violent videos; we are scared that some sort of culture of violence will take them over. Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands - literally thousands - of songs about broken hearts and pain and misery and loss. The unhappiest people I know, romantically speaking, are the ones who like pop music the most; and I don't know whether pop music has caused this unhappiness, but I do know that they've been listening to the sad songs longer than they've been living the unhappy lives."

vichu··on Show HN: Mana Pool – Market for Magic Cards
Why does blockchain need to be involved? Magic: The Gathering Online exists and has existed for 20+ years without the need for a blockchain.
vichu··on Staying Alive
I don't follow your logic. How would constructing a new ship from new materials ever count as being the same as the original ship?

At least in the Ship of Theseus paradox, there is the case where you take the old replaced parts and construct a ship from those parts - which is an interesting question, is it the original ship? In this case, the only thing consistent about the ship is the design. Take mass manufactured goods then - are they the same article because the have the same materials?

vichu··on Staying Alive
I viewed those questions as a play on the Ship of Theseus.

If the ship is completely destroyed and a perfect replica rebuilt elsewhere, is it the same ship? Almost certainly not.

If the ship is slowly replaced over time, is it the same ship? As a matter of form or psychological continuity as posited in the question, almost certainly.

vichu··on The concurrence of three climatic events
I fear that this is the year "wet-bulb temperature" becomes a term regular households across the world become deeply familiar with. It may be as ubiquitous as the term "social distancing" became.

I've always naively thought that climate disaster was still 10-20 years out, but it seems like it's going to begin in earnest now and instead be completely catastrophic after these next 10 years.

What can I as an individual do? Move to Saskatchewan or Alaska? I already know from a friend in Alaska that the melting permafrost is causing many native villages to sink and collapse, and it's only gotten worse in the past few years. vichu··on EA Lays Off over 200 Apex Legends Testers over Zoom Call
Funny you say that since from what I heard it was the worst of both worlds: the workers _were_ hauled into the office to get laid off.
vichu··on Creatively Misusing TLA+
This looks like a second-chance pool story as it didn't get much attention last time it was posted.

vichu··on Ask HN: What are we even chasing?
Oh, I like you. That is also an option :)
vichu··on Ask HN: What are we even chasing?
This is such a funny question. It's not a particularly uncommon one either, but I find it so peculiar.

Who's "we" here? Are you saying "we're" the same, you and I? Are you using the royal "we"? Are you a group of people running this same account? But I suppose I do know the answer to that question, "we" is the group of people like you that is still fervently participating in the rat race.

Live as you can, live as you should. There's not much else I or anyone else can really say. If you have goals, try to achieve them. If you fail, get back up. If you succeed, keep on going. What are we going after? We're just living. Is there an end? Unfortunately, yes. But don't take it so seriously.

Read, meditate, go see a therapist, maybe take some drugs. You'll figure it out.

vichu··on So Good They Can't Lay You Off
As far as I can tell from anecdotal reports by friends at some of these companies, many of these tech layoffs have been done with little rhyme or reason - at least with regard to technical skill, individual contribution, and team cohesion. There's inklings of metrics that the suits decided on, but it is murky and unclear.

It seems like few to no people in any of their managerial chains were consulted.

I'm curious to hear from HNers if any of you were in the room that got to decide who got to stay and who had to go.

vichu··on Web developer tool secrets that shouldn’t be secrets
Games as teaching tools is definitely an interesting topic.

You might get a kick out of https://vim-adventures.com/ or https://cssgridgarden.com/ or http://www.flexboxdefense.com/

These are just off the top of my head - would love to see other examples.

vichu··on Google’s recruiting system is famously brutal. Many workers think it’s failing

vichu··on Super Follows
The only immediate use case that comes to mind is as a competitor to OnlyFans. Sex workers by and large are already all over Twitter.
vichu··on Birds are dying in the United States and no one knows why
It hasn't been overnight that birds have been disappearing.

For example, this article from the NYT dated 2 years ago: https://archive.ph/zfDAH

vichu··on If you search "emacs" in Google, it responds: Did you mean: vi. And vice versa.
Next you'll tell me to type "zerg rush" and hit "I'm feeling lucky"
vichu··on A few negative online reviews early on can hurt a restaurant
I think this is an experience common to enough people that it's frequently used as a prime example of the explore/exploit concept in machine learning.
vichu··on Sewage could reveal true scale of coronavirus outbreak
There's an Adult Swim short about that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJklHwoYgBQ :)
vichu··on Kava: Fiji’s psychoactive brew
Thank you for the clarification. I personally have never drank kava or used any sort of kava derived product, but I have used Erowid to great benefit concerning a wide range of other substances and thought that the information there would be up to a similar standard. Still, there is information there that echoes what you’ve outlined in your comment - so it doesn’t seem like it was all hooey.

How does that saying go? The road to good answers is paved through Cunningham’s law? :)

vichu··on Kava: Fiji’s psychoactive brew
For anyone interested in trying kava recreationally (or really any new psychoactive drug), I highly recommend you read up on Erowid before partaking in consumption. Erowid is an amazing repository of knowledge, from scientific articles to dosage recommendations to anecdotal trip reports.

vichu··on Why Is America So Depressed?
"No" is not a proper response to a "why" headline.
vichu··on Cliff Stoll, the mad scientist who invented the art of hunting hackers
You’re an inspiration, Cliff :)
vichu··on Ask HN: CS, still a good career in 3-5 years?
So would you stop if it were a “bad” career choice? That seems just as disingenuous as you’re insinuating your colleagues to be in switching to CS. And anecdotally, having went to CMU, everyone I knew switched to CS or moved CS adjacent - and many of those that switched are enjoying it to the fullest - not as FAANG engineers but many as CS PhDs.

In undergrad, the crowning achievements you can get are mainly the internships, especially at FAANG companies. Don’t worry about it too much. If it really is about the code and the work, just keep doing what you like doing. Computer science isn’t going to go away any time soon, and if it is, academics will be the last to let it go.

vichu··on T-Mobile demand Lemonade to stop using the color magenta
Lemonade is an insurance company.
vichu··on Richard Stallman resigns from CSAIL at MIT
I’m likely not as, but kids in undergrad still “finger”ed people at my school as late as 2016. Can’t say anything about after that though :)
