veryworried··on There is no reason to cross the U.S. by train, but I did it anyway
$2k is hardly an "absolute fortune". For the typical hackernews software developer this is something like a week's worth of work for one of the most unforgettable experiences of their lives.
veryworried··on Doomed Jets Lacked 2 Safety Features That Boeing Sold as Extras
Raising the cost per plane is not so simple of a solution in some markets, and may make it very difficult to stay competitive, putting you out of business there entirely. Also, not all planes might be purchased for passenger travel, maybe a plane is used for package delivery and doesn’t need to come with so much extra safety. Who knows.
veryworried··on Doomed Jets Lacked 2 Safety Features That Boeing Sold as Extras
What’s more criminal is not buying the extra safety features. Creating safety features, while important, is not free. Someone has to pay for it, no matter how many lives they save. Hard to fault Boeing there.

It’s like side air bags in cars. Some have them, some don’t, but if you want them you will pay an extra 2 grand as each airbag unit is easily a grand each, and must be replaced completely if it ever deploys. If you buy your teenager a car you can decide if you will pay extra for those safety features.

veryworried··on Oculus Rift S
Only the word from my own personal source.

But really, we are only getting closer to a new headset as time goes on. It is inevitable.

veryworried··on Artificial meat: UK scientists growing 'bacon' in labs
You should avoid fake meat in general as a vegetarian unless you can personally verify the source, or otherwise accept the risk that sometimes you will eat real meat.

I went to a party once where a vegetarian was told a fake meat was used for some chili, but it really wasn't.

veryworried··on Oculus Rift S
Wait for Valve's headset coming out later this year. Direct competitor to the Rift S, with higher resolution, 135 degree vision, and knuckles controllers that let you open and close your hand naturally. You'll be glad you did.

The thing about a software fix is that you never know when the solution is near. It could be fixed next week, or it may require an entire rewrite of critical systems. You just don't know until it's fully diagnosed. So why sound the alarm when plenty of flights have gone without problems and a software fix might be around the corner, especially if you have all your best men working on the problem?
veryworried··on Cockpit voice recorder of Lion Air jet depicts pilots' frantic search for fix
Where can we listen to the recording??
veryworried··on Ask HN: What do you think of the Google Stadia?
I think it's fantastic for AMD. Google will have to buy so much AMD hardware, and whether they are successful or not AMD will still be flush with new cash that will allow them to become a bigger player in the chip space. Stock is going up. And if for some reason Stadia really takes off it would only go up even more, I'm talking $100+.

The big advantage AMD has that no one really talks about is their ability to do client virtualization at the hardware level, not software.

veryworried··on Pilot Who Hitched a Ride Saved Lion Air 737 on the Day Before Deadly Crash
One thing that bothers me about this generation is this thirst for infinite punishment.

People hunger for someone to blame, rattling off a long list of maladies that should befall that person, until they have been thoroughly satisfied, but they are never satisfied. They always feel there should be someone else, something more, something deserved.

The truth is, there is no point to such a punishment here. It is unlikely that any individual plotted to kill people by pushing some faulty code out of malice. These were people simply doing their best and they failed.

veryworried··on Meritocracy doesn't exist, and believing it does has bad effects
I disagree. Many people do not read the articles. You can easily tell by taking the number of unique users commenting on articles and comparing to standard marketing metrics for shared articles.

And they don’t need to read anyway, because comments are the real reason people come to a site like this. If the comments praise the article highly or make strong references, then perhaps it warrants a read, otherwise the comments make for much better content. You can often tell what the article’s main idea is from the headline anyway, otherwise it’s just a bad headline and probably a bad article.

veryworried··on Thinkpad X210
Why in God’s name are you using Kali as a daily driver? Anyone who does this has no idea what they’re doing. Kali is made exclusively for pentesting, with a modified and insecure kernel specifically for running certain pentesting apps better.
veryworried··on Show HN: This Question Does Not Exist
This is like a mental tarpit, where you waste time reading trying to understand what the person is saying only to realize they were a bot and all your effort was for nothing, that is time you will never get back now.

This is a terrifying way to destroy an online community if a person floods it with nonsense content like this.
