veryworried··on Former student destroys 59 university computers using USB Killer device
It’s not about the computers. This individual has demonstrated he has no regard or respect for others property, and may very well go on to commit other more serious crimes if he gets away easily with this one. Others may also feel encouraged to imitate what he did if there are no serious repercussions.
veryworried··on Social media is spreading 'toxic positivity'
So much of the life coaching industry reeks of this crap. Follow any 20-something “life” coach these days and you’ll probably be treated to a stream of flowery feel good quotes that remind you to stay positive at all times.

Eventually these little hits of positivity aren’t strong enough and some seek out expensive coaching services that give you much larger dosages of the same shit while you pretend to work through your problems.

Emojis are too jocular for the tone we are trying to strike here. They lower the level of discourse down to something more like Reddit or Twitter.

If you ever see emoji in hackernews comments then hackernews, as it has been, is over.
veryworried··on Pig brains partially revived four hours after death
No matter how hard I think, I cannot seem to manifest any true pain in my mind. I doubt a pig could either.
veryworried··on Pig brains partially revived four hours after death
I don’t see why they bothered drugging the brains. Even if they became conscious, the pig’s bodies are dead and gone. There is nothing to feel, one is simply alone with their thoughts, perhaps even dreams.
veryworried··on ‘When the Glaciers Disappear, Those Species Will Go Extinct’
When you are working in software, you are not “sitting at a desk”, you’re sitting at the helm of the future. All of the advancements and evolution of mankind and life on this earth have led us to the creation of civilization’s most important tool: the computer. And as computers weave more into the fabric of our world and everyday life, those who master them wield power like Gods. There’s no place I’d rather be.
veryworried··on College Kids Are Living Like Kings in Vancouver’s Empty Mansions
Good luck repairing the level 5 drywall finish these mansions tend to have.
veryworried··on Jack Dorsey says it’s time to rethink the fundamental dynamics of Twitter
Excuse my outburst, but I'm wondering when these social network algorithms are going to realize: I don't follow "interests", I follow PEOPLE.

If you want to show users random news and gossip, then make a fucking news website already.

It's like if you build a chatroom, except instead of simply showing things that people in the current room are saying as they say it, it mostly pulls in vaguely similar stuff that people in other rooms are saying, and then sorts all messages in order of whoever is the most popular or says the most relevant keywords.

veryworried··on We Built a Facial Recognition Machine for $60
What exactly does an "illegal" facial recognition machine look like?
veryworried··on Call Me by My Name: Deborah Abrams Kaplan
It is almost certainly for self-protection. Responding seriously in response to someone's sarcasm or snarks is a fool's endeavor. The person doesn't care and their only interest is to score cheap laughs at the cost of lowering the level of discourse.
veryworried··on Trading bots are running wild on cryptocurrency exchanges
How would one go about becoming a flash boy, if it were still feasible?
veryworried··on Notre-Dame cathedral: Firefighters tackle blaze in Paris
But it’s not the whole story. If we had no connection to the past, it would feel like there’s no way to ever have a connection to the future, and thus it would feel pointless to do anything that is not entirely contained within your life time. Humanity would then become a very short term thinking species, and no great work or progress would ever be done.
veryworried··on Death by PowerPoint: The slide that killed seven people
I thought this was going to be a more direct kill, as in maybe a slide that flashed bright colors very quickly and killed people who got seizures from it.
veryworried··on 1060-hour image of the Large Magellanic Cloud captured by amateur astronomers
It is not possible to ever see a scene like this even if one were sitting in deep space is it? These sorts of images are the result long exposures, but a human would only see blackness and stars, and maybe some faint puffs of light here and there.
veryworried··on Want to learn a new skill? Take some short breaks
He’s fine. A typical developer’s true work day is probably all of one gallon.
veryworried··on Nord: An arctic, north-bluish color palette
And developers should study it, then create a simple site generator where you can enter the palette, a name, some text and spit out the same site for whatever custom scheme you want.
veryworried··on Ask HN: Have you ever felt trapped?
Many years ago when I was no longer happy with my job I began to quietly search for a new one. My current job paid well but I had hit a wall and felt I was not going to make any progress on my career if I stayed there. I ended up getting an excellent offer for a job across the country that even included relocation expenses. I was thrilled and ready to put in my two weeks notice and pack it all up except when I went to tell my wife about it she made it very clear she did not want to relocate anywhere, and any scenario that involves relocation will end in divorce.

Not when they bite your toddler and it dies damn near instantly.
veryworried··on CVE-2019-9193: Not a Security Vulnerability
There is no rational, people who simply don't understand or use a certain feature are more likely to write it off as a bad or useless feature. Pay them no mind.

COPY TO/FROM PROGRAM has been valuable for our data warehousing operations.

veryworried··on Japan's working population drops further - and the number of foreigners rise
I see this as a good thing. We need less people in the world, it will be better for the planet, and civilization will be more sustainable. Better to have a highly automated more empty world than a hot crowded one with too many mouths to feed and not enough food to go around.
veryworried··on Bloodsucking worms from pythons are killing native Florida snakes, study says
This isn’t so bad if it kills off water moccasins which will definitely kill you if they bite you. They like to hide in bushes or under trash cans and can easily lash out at you or a child if you get too close. A python is much easier to avoid, and generally restricts itself to the Everglades.
veryworried··on Tech workers are organizing and demanding democracy in the workplace
The company has a right to hire contractors or outsource work.
veryworried··on Unheard History of Bodybuilding Forums
These groups tend to be invite only and don’t publicly post this code as it reveals usernames of people on blacklists, but if you search around discord channels or some subreddits you might find them.
veryworried··on Tech workers are organizing and demanding democracy in the workplace
Unions for tech workers are ridiculous. We’re not coal miners, we are highly skilled white collar professionals that should be more than capable of finding work that suits us without extra regulatory bullshit.

I find the people who are clamoring for unions in tech are among the least talented and skilled of employees, and they should probably find a new industry entirely instead of trying to change the one they’re in to be more hospitable to the lowest common denominators. Perhaps we can help the process along by putting these people on hiring blacklists and ensuring they never work in this town again.

Yup, even custom css to help point out who you should downvote.
veryworried··on Japanese study uncovers protein that keeps skin youthful
Nor should they need to know better. Being a gangster should be a universally reprehensible thing, like being a drug dealer, or gang banger, or mafioso. Gangsters are killers and thieves.

Admitting to being a miscer might put you on privately run HN blacklists.
veryworried··on Japanese study uncovers protein that keeps skin youthful
I don't see the point in ignoring race, or any other physical traits. It's almost as if when it comes to survival some people would rather be dead than being seen as a bigot or racist.

When the details of the situation you are in start to fit the common parameters of stories you hear that's when you need to be on high alert.

For instance, I doubt most people will think twice if they pass a woman in an alley, no matter how she's dressed. Females mugging and killing people just isn't a thing you hear about all that often. So you take your chances.

Likewise a man of any race wearing a suit is probably not going to be perceived as any kind of threat either.

Could these people be threats? Of course, but statistically it is unlikely.

Likewise, if you are somewhere where a member of a race has never killed anybody, you probably would feel at ease around those people. Or maybe it's an area where crime is low in general all around, then perhaps you walk in peace and freely ignore everyone as a threat.

It has nothing to do with being a bigot or a racist, it's all about being aware of past patterns that have led to people's deaths and avoiding them.
