vegasje··on Ideas on modernizing the open-source desktop
Thanks so much for this detailed write-up! It's always enlightening to learn about different setups, especially when they have been painstakingly crafted over multiple decades.
vegasje··on Ideas on modernizing the open-source desktop
This all sounds extremely interesting. Could you go into detail about how you've achieved these things?
vegasje··on Running Ubuntu on the Lenovo IdeaPad Duet
I've been thinking about getting one of these. I'm currently using a Surface Go 2, and I'm addicted to the small form factor, but it's not as quick to open and start typing as a laptop would be.

How is the battery life and fan noise? Not sure I can go back from fanless.

vegasje··on Windows native app development is a mess
This isn't well-known, so I figured I'd mention it.

Microsoft offers a service called Azure Artifact Signing (used to be called Trusted Signing) that manages code signing for you:

https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/pricing/details/artifact-s...

It's $9.99/mo, and you don't need to worry about procuring or renewing code signing certs.

vegasje··on Show HN: Pie Menu – a radial menu for macOS
Have you considered displaying the text representation of the currently-hovered menu item inside the center of the circle? Or if the text wouldn't fit, then above/below the circle?
vegasje··on Differences in cancer rates among adults born between 1920 and 1990
Could this be reflective of which countries screen the most?

Looking at the regions with the lowest cancer incidence on the chart, it makes me think it could.

vegasje··on Eating cheese plays a role in healthy, happy aging – who are we to argue?
To offer a different perspective, I'm unable to eat dairy, and I am very grateful that we have seen such a boom in development of non-dairy alternatives over the past 10 years.
vegasje··on AMD Reveals Next-Gen Desktop Processors for Extreme PC Gaming
Please tell me where I can get a used 1080 ti (that works) for $100.
vegasje··on Ask HN: What work/office purchase transformed your life?
Is the old Air still the best option in this space, or have other manufacturers stepped up in recent years?

Last time I looked (a few years ago) the Air was far and away the best performer.

vegasje··on Show HN: DevPod – Codespaces but Open Source, Client-Only, and Unopinionated
Thank you for that!
vegasje··on Show HN: DevPod – Codespaces but Open Source, Client-Only, and Unopinionated
This looks like it could be exactly what I have been looking for--nice work!

I manage multiple AWS accounts, and my credentials file has multiple profiles in it. When using the AWS provider, is it possible to specify which profile to use?

vegasje··on Air-to-Air Heat Exchangers for Healthier Energy-Efficient Homes
I empathize with you, as I am in the same boat.
vegasje··on Ask HN: What sub $200 product improved your 2022
I had been using a laptop stand for a long time, but just upgraded this week to a laptop desk mount.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BDQQVN2?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_prod...

This has been a total game changer for me, as I could never find a stand that would get the laptop up as high as I wanted. My posture has never been better!

vegasje··on 15.5-Inch MacBook Air Expected to Launch in Spring 2023
My M2 Air builds our iOS app in less than 1/10th the amount of time it took on my 2015 MBP.
vegasje··on Show HN: Trading cards made with e-ink displays
This is incredible! I'm so excited to see what you do with this in the future.

May I ask what e-ink displays you're using?

vegasje··on We are still early with the cloud
I've had interest in trying this dev flow out, but I haven't been able to determine how it would work for multiple projects that work in concert.

For example, a web dashboard project with its own backend that also communicates with an API, which is a separate project.

Does Gitpod (or Codespaces) support projects (repositories) that work together?

vegasje··on Show HN: A piano chord reference tool
Please don't push history states for the sake of it. It's natural to want to explore variations of a chord, and one shouldn't expect it to impact their ability to go back to the previous page.
vegasje··on Let’s Not Have a Beer
He must have been the kid that cried after getting the wrong toy in their Happy Meal.
vegasje··on Video: Amazon manager shouts at workers, warns them against signing union cards
Uhhh did we watch the same video?
vegasje··on Amazon's new role-playing game can help you build your AWS skills
If you play it, you'll see that the 2d diagrams are just intro guides to each "mission". The actual gameplay has you launching a pre-provisioned AWS Console in a separate tab and completing set objectives.
vegasje··on NFT marketplace shuts, citing 'rampant' fakes, plagiarism problem
You might as well buy the rights to the first transatlantic flight, or maybe just go name a star.
vegasje··on Ask HN: Would the cloud survive a US Civil war?
It sounds to me like you have tied your life so closely to tech that you are unable to see the forest through the trees. If some kind of civil/global event occurs that takes out AWS, then you can bet that public works across the country would be in the same, if not worse, shape. There is no sector that would be untouched by civil war. We are at the same time both well distributed and irrationally continental.
vegasje··on AWS Service Terms 42.10
The number in the title is referencing a clause in the terms, not stating the version number of the terms.
vegasje··on How we built a serverless SQL database
I'm quite confused by Request Units, and trying to predict how many would be used by queries/operations.

I launched a test cluster, and the RUs are continuously increasing without me having connected to the cluster yet. At this rate of RU climb, the cluster would use over 8mil of the available 10mil RUs in a month without me touching it.

Coming from AWS, one of the most difficult aspects of using Aurora is guessing how many I/Os will be used for different workloads. It would be a shame to introduce this complexity for CockroachDB Serverless, especially if the RUs are impacted by internal cluster operations that aren't initiated by the user.

vegasje··on New Firefox
There is something deeply depressing about "all you need online" being videos, pictures, and memes of dogs.

What a bunch of dopes we are.

vegasje··on I've compiled the best SaaS Landing pages and broke down all their secrets
They are both beautiful landing pages, and I do agree that some products are inherently easier to market.

Was the team that designed these pages an internal team, or hired externally?

vegasje··on MacBook Pro with faster performance and new features for pros
The 13" model does not offer 32gb of RAM as an option.

I guess I'll have to continue waiting...

vegasje··on Emirates Planes Could Be Going Windowless
Take a look at the video linked in the article:

https://twitter.com/ZachHonig/status/936584456755929089?ref_...

This seems very well executed to me.

vegasje··on Two top Equifax execs to retire after security breach
They have a Chief Security Officer. If there was one thing that was in the direct line of this person's responsibility, it would be a security issue like this.

Food for thought.

vegasje··on Flutter – A mobile app SDK for iOS and Android
This is very true when it comes to consumer apps, but in our experience businesses prefer a more unified experience for their users--it minimizes the training effort.
