vbarrielle··on Google's greenhouse gas emissions jump 48% in five years
It's not the first time I've seen it claimed that AI will magically help "propel climate solutions". But I've never seen a hint at how that would work.
vbarrielle··on There's No Good Reason to Buy a Carbon Bike
The author makes it look like only pro racers are fast enough to benefit from carbon bikes. I guess he's never met good amateur racers, they are very fast, the big difference between an amateur racer and a pro is in how long they can sustain a given power, and the ability to sustain it after a very long race. But most amateur races are done at speeds above 40km/h on the flat, where aero matters a lot.
vbarrielle··on Turing awardees republished key methods and ideas without credit
It's actually a common problem in lots of computing related research communities. Papers older than 10 years ago, sometimes even 5 years ago, are ignored. Because the results do not compare in terms of computing power, and because reimplementing old papers is often very hard because they are often too vague.
vbarrielle··on Impacts of lack of sleep
Heavy exercise should be avoided in the evening, it's best to do it early in the morning or during your lunch break if you can.
vbarrielle··on Google Chrome pushes browser history-based ad targeting
Firefox has a "saved credit cards" feature. I'm not using it, so maybe I'm unaware of its limitations?
vbarrielle··on KDE Plasma 6 Has Reached the Point of Being “Fairly Livable”
I found the name of the option, it's "Separate screen focus", located in the settings under Window Management -> Window Behavior -> Focus Tab -> Multiscreen behavior

It looks like that last session only shows up when there are multiple monitors, which is why I could not find it on my laptop.

vbarrielle··on KDE Plasma 6 Has Reached the Point of Being “Fairly Livable”
I'm using KDE Plasma with multiple desktops and monitors using only keyboard shortcuts, it works pretty well. I can switch the focus to other monitors, send a window to another monitor, using keyboard shortcuts. There's an important configuration that needs to be set for this to work, which says each monitor has a separate focus.
vbarrielle··on Show HN: Slint – A declarative UI toolkit for embedded and desktop
It looks like you can use the GPLv3 license for this use case.
vbarrielle··on Adventures in Debian's Qt Land
I've considered doing that, was it hard to set up?
vbarrielle··on Faster CPython at PyCon, part one
Due to the possibility to fuse multiple operations in C++ (whereas you often have intermediate arrays in numpy), I routinely get 20x speedups when porting from numpy to C++. Good libraries like eigen help a lot.
vbarrielle··on Ask HN: What lesser-known accessories do you use with your computer?
Really depends on the laptop. On my work laptop, the microphone is located next to the fans (instead of for instance next to the webcam). You can imagine the audio quality.
vbarrielle··on Bicycle
60km/h is sprint speed for elite cyclists on road bikes, I guess recumbent bikes can go way faster than that.
vbarrielle··on I don’t want a new phone, but I’m probably buying one
I think the blame can be put on the closed ecosystems of phones. On laptops and desktops, with the possibility to install any OS, it's more often possible to meet the requirements of up-to-date frameworks using the same hardware. My laptop is from 2010 and is still running everything I want, it's up to date and responsive. With the current hardware of phones, and even their hardware of 6 years ago, I don't see any reason why they should be changed, other than being closed platforms where one cannot control the OS.
vbarrielle··on My list of favorite secure messaging apps
The threat model that's addressed by deletion of message is the seizing of one's device by a hostile party (eg dictatorship). One cannot be incriminated by messages that have been deleted.

As you pointed out this will not help if your correspondent cannot be trusted.

vbarrielle··on New video of Tesla crash demonstrates the problem of semi-automated driving
I found it easier to understand your example by comparing to openstreetmap, which seems up to date at that location: https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=18/54.64443/25.05401
vbarrielle··on Memory Safe Languages in Android 13
In my opinion a very good point about Rust is that it is built by people who know these functional programming concepts and why they are yseful, but are pragmatic enough to give them names that are easier to grasp for folks who don't know these concepts.

And it's possible the lack of higher kinded types, forcing reimplementation, actually gave the opportunity to look for frindlier names.

vbarrielle··on Stupid Security Things (2017)
I know at least one french bank which accepts regular strings as passwords, so it may not be a legal requirement. Which makes it confusing why it's so widespread...
vbarrielle··on I've said it all before but here we go again
In what respect building a theory that explains an experiment that was not consistent with the then prevalent theories (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michelson%E2%80%93Morley_exper...) can be considered as solving a pseudo problem?
vbarrielle··on Aerodynamics of Gravel Bikes
In pro cycling it's actually forbidden to have aero fairings on your bike. During the Armstrong years there has been a controversy about the placement of his radio on his back during time trials that would incur fairing.
vbarrielle··on A near 100% renewables grid is well within reach, and with little storage
You make it sound unfair, but from the point of view of EDF getting the power you generate in the grid is probably never profitable. If you're in excess it's probable other sources of renewable are peaking simultaneously, but the demand does not change. They have to lower the production of the nuclear plants which is not free. Otherwise there would be a surplus.

And transport fees is actually reasonable, it's a lot more expensive to connect lots of small production sources to the grid than a couple of big ones.

vbarrielle··on Eigen: A C++ template library for linear algebra
But they are nx1 matrices in Eigen, you can call the rows() and cols() methods to check that. However, the nice part is that, since Eigen knows the number of columns at compile time, it enables vector methods such as size() in addition, which lets you handle them as true vector.

But tge nice part is that these vectors can still interact well with parts of the code that expect a matrix.

vbarrielle··on LaBanquePostale payments request bank password
La Banque Postale recommends doing it with an app, this is the workaround for people without an app.
vbarrielle··on From macOS to Arch Linux
This feature is available for the linux/android combination using kdeconnect. Unfortunately I don't think there's an iOS app for that.
vbarrielle··on Blaze: High Performance Vector/Matrix Arithmetic Library For C++
The blaze library was started in 2012. The build tool was released in 2015.
vbarrielle··on Looking Glass: Run a Windows VM on Linux in a window with native performance
That sounds very interesting. Does that mean I should be able to load a VM containing my windows partition fron linux, even without a dedicated GPU? Do you have a pointer to a tutorial explaining the setup ?
vbarrielle··on French lawmakers approve a ban on short domestic flights
Unfortunately yes, airplanes have less infrastructure costs than trains. Once you airport is built, you are potentially connected to any other airport. For trains you still need to build thousands of miles of rails, with complex infrastructure to allow them to change directions.

And rails need permanent upkeeping, it's not a one time investment.

vbarrielle··on Drop millions of allocations by using a linked list (2015)
Zig requires the allocator to be specified for each allocation: https://ziglang.org/documentation/0.5.0/#Memory

This has a huge impact on the API design, so I don't think this can be retrofit in standard libraries of existing languages (because of backwards compatibility).

vbarrielle··on Bastion of the Turbofish (2020)
You're right, since I'm frequently using templated functions I encounter this issue quite often, but here when I wanted to give an example I forgot I needed to be in a dependent context. I guess I'd better test my example next time I want to give one...
vbarrielle··on Bastion of the Turbofish (2020)
C++ has a rule similar to the turbofish though:

    #include <Eigen/Dense> // a library where I know it's required

    using namespace Eigen;

    int main() {
        VectorXd zeros = VectorXd::zeros(5);
        VectorXf zeros_float = zeros.template cast<float>();
        return 0;
    }
vbarrielle··on Global real interest rates and the ‘suprasecular’ decline, 1311–2018 (2020)
> gdp growth =/= energy consumption growth

As far as data is concerned, the correlation is pretty big though: https://theshiftproject.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/gdp_e...
