valleyjo··on Scouting's Real Crisis Is Not Marketing. It Is Decades of Neglect.
Once you earn it you are an Eagle Scout for life. So you are an Eagle Scout not a “former” Eagle Scout. At least that’s what I was thought!
valleyjo··on Apple's Siri revamp reportedly delayed again
It’s paywalled for me. But I’m wondering if it’s apple or googles fault for the delay.
valleyjo··on New report calls for end to child marriage in the US
If you’re not trusted to drink you shouldn’t be trusted to get married.
valleyjo··on Microsoft is officially sending employees back to the office
I strongly prefer RTO for myself personally. I can’t stand working from home. I believe the solution is have a shorter commute and live closer to the office (even though I live far away, I am trying to convince my wife to move). I have mixed feelings about forcing RTO because I know some strongly prefer WFH. Maybe 2 or 3 days is the best middle ground. Personally I miss when everyone was at the office 5 days a week.
valleyjo··on More on Apple's Trust-Eroding 'F1 the Movie' Wallet Ad
Uber does this all the time to me. It’s so frustrating. I allow notifications from uber when I don’t from most apps because they are useful when a ride is incoming. Yet I get random spam notifications. I wish Apple would stand up for their own rules and do something about it but since they don’t even enforce this rule on themselves what hope is there
valleyjo··on Apple introduces a universal design across platforms
There’s a reduce transparency setting in accessibility. Wonderful what this will look like if that’s on. I’ve been using it for years as I don’t like frills.
valleyjo··on TikTok preparing for U.S. shut-off on Sunday
I’m a us citizen and I do want this. Speak for yourself. China bans us social media. Us should ban Chinese social media.
valleyjo··on In a first, EU Court fines EU for breaching own data protection law
At least they’re consistent? I don’t know seems like folks in the EU would be better off spending time innovating on product and technology. It’s fine to regulate but to make that your only contribution is not fine imo.
valleyjo··on "We took on Google and they were forced to pay out £2B"
The whole google shopping case is ridiculous. If you are “big enough” and you change (aka make improvements to) your products you get fined. Foundem could have built a direct relationship with customers but that’s not the direction they went.
valleyjo··on Security research on Private Cloud Compute
What do we know about apples other backend services? I’ve worked in compute infra in big tech for 8 years and I don’t know anything about apple’s backend.
valleyjo··on Working from home is powering productivity
I think the top comment reflects this - I have adhd too and I can’t be productive at home. I suffer a commute every day because my job performance tanked when I worked from home 8 mo strait. I’m much more productive at the office - I just wish my wife would agree to move closer to the office.
valleyjo··on Return-to-Office Mandates Aren't Worth the Talent Risks
If you have a geographically centralized team (I.e everyone is in the same city) it makes sense to me to have the team be together at least one day a week. If you’re by yourself in a company office then RTO mandates makes no sense to me.
valleyjo··on Return-to-Office Mandates Aren't Worth the Talent Risks
personally I go to the office every day even though I have a long commute. I hate working from home. Mandates for RTO don’t universally make the job worse. Of course I acknowledge it does for some people but not everyone.
valleyjo··on Retirement of Office 365 connectors within Microsoft Teams
Is the an EU regulation response thing? The article doesn’t mention that but I’m not very familiar with this offering so I wasn’t sure.
valleyjo··on Things the guys who stole my phone have texted me to try to get me to unlock it
This happened to my sister. She got her phone stolen at a bar in Austin. They’ve tried to phish her multiple times and now it’s gotten to intimidation texts where they are threatening physical and sexual violence to her unless she unlocks the phone. She put it in lost mode right away and due to my assurance she knows she is safe but honestly it does make you kind of just want to unlock and get the nightmare over with.

She has tracked the iPhone via find my through a few us cities and finally it’s in China.

valleyjo··on US Senate passes TikTok divestment-or-ban bill
What do you mean? China has banned all US social media. On the simple grounds of reciprocity (which afaik is a generally accepted foreign policy strategy) this ban seems justified.
valleyjo··on Children Need Neighborhoods Where They Can Walk and Bike
I grew up in a suburb development where you couldn’t walk to anything. It was pretty isolated, until I had a car it was difficult for me to visit friends or do anything outside the house. I’m now living in an area that’s super walkable and has a community feel. My young kids bike every day to one of the four playgrounds nearby. They see friends every day too even if it’s just when they walk by our house. For me it highlights how lonely and isolating the suburb experience can be I don’t think I could go back to that and having experienced it the other way I would not want that for my kids.

valleyjo··on Sam Bankman-Fried Convicted
I want to see his parents go down too. Sounds like some criminal actions there too.
valleyjo··on AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 7000 CPUs: Up to 96 Zen 4 Cores for Workstations
For me personally this is too little too late. About 5 years ago I could have really used a super powerful multicore processor in my local desktop. But my company has since moved to the cloud and I just use ssh on a 128 core VM based on AMD Epyc.
valleyjo··on REI is Laying Off 275 Employees
“Ultralight” backpacking favors skills rather than gear. Folks have done entire 3k mile thru hikes with 5lbs of gear. The main way you get that low is simply by not taking much with you. You carry only the essentials. I don’t know if this is what the parent poster was referring to but it’s what my mind went to.
valleyjo··on Google tries internet air-gap for some staff PCs
When I worked on azure compute we had dedicated laptops that were basically bricks. All they did was connect to production. No internet no admin rights limited set of software. This is a pretty reasonable security move.

This approach from google is basically the opposite. No internet on your workstation but your laptop works like normal.

valleyjo··on The damaging results of mandated return to office
Not universally true. I strongly prefer work from office. I hate commuting but prefer the office so that’s a paradox I struggle with. I’ve been thinking terrible commutes are a symptom of how we’ve built society. If everyone lived within 20 minutes by public transit or bike or walk from the office would there still be as much pushback?
valleyjo··on Google doesn’t want employees working remotely anymore
Personally I highly prefer the office. I hate the commute but prefer the office. It’s a great conundrum for me. I guess this is a hot take - but I miss the pre pandemic days when most people were in the office most days.

My takeaway from this experience is to bemoan the construction of US society around cars. If we all lived close to the office and or had quicker / easier transport maybe this would be less of a problem.

valleyjo··on The Prime Video microservices to monolith story
“For every order of magnitude change everything breaks.” An oversimplified rule of thumb - but I think it applies here.

valleyjo··on Microsoft’s new Surface Dock tosses the proprietary port, uses Thunderbolt 4
Can this disrupt the Caldigit TS4 as the “consensus best dock”? It has fewer ports, notably no card reader, but otherwise looks like it provides similar functionality for $100 less.

valleyjo··on Microsoft Says It Will Give US Workers Unlimited Time Off
I worked for Microsoft for many years across azure and office and had (only) 4 managers. Not a single one of them ever cared about vacation time. As long as work was done well and on time my managers never cared about folks reporting vacation time. So from my limited experience, I already had unlimited vacation at Microsoft.
