vadym909··on How I Used Eve Online to Predict the Great Recession (2013)
Where do you think its coming from now?
vadym909··on Amazon will launch its own delivery service to compete with FedEx, UPS
They use an Uber like model with gigsters to do deliveries which is why you encounter different people https://www.geekwire.com/2017/amazon-delivery-driver-like-wo...
vadym909··on Amazon Health
I've seen and paid employer health benefits bills- $15K-$24K is the range depending on the quality of healthplans.

About 10-25% of this is what employees pay as their part of the premium normally, the rest is employer paid. Stingier companies cover 75% of the employee cost and 50% of dependents cost.

vadym909··on New Startup Working on Software to Help Government Fix Housing Problems
Buy a 10 acre lot in a nimby area (Palo Alto Hiils/Atherton/Los Altos Hills) for $5M, Split it into 20 x 0.25 acres and sell it for $250K each to teachers, firefighters, police, retired army soldiers telling the buyers it is sold as-is. Let them build houses on their lots and figure out the rest.
vadym909··on 2018 Stellar roadmap
Thanks for this. I had bought a couple of bitcoins in 2014 just for kicks and don't even remember signing up for Stellar- even though I recently bought some on the market. Saw this message and checked my email and lo and behold- You've got Stellar. Recovering and upgrading was a breeze. I'm $3600 richer.
vadym909··on The US is the most expensive nation in which to have a baby
Yup- Wanted to burn off some blackheads and a US skin specialist charged $175 to take off 1 using a Ultrasonic machine, went to Mexico and took off 20 for $5 using the same machine.
vadym909··on Why Is 'Affordable' Housing So Expensive to Build?
take the caltrain from south bay to SF and you'll see plenty of land that can be developed from warehouses to housing.
vadym909··on As Flow of Foreign Students Wanes, U.S. Universities Feel the Sting
even if they just get rid of Prop 13 on rentals and passing the benefit to children- at least a future generation may have a chance to affordability in CA... "Thanks to a state proposition that took effect in 1986, known as the "parent-child reassessment exclusion," a child can inherit a parent's principal residence, whether modest or worth millions, without triggering a reassessment for property taxes."
vadym909··on Nextdoor raises $75M round at $1.5B valuation
The only thing I use Nextdoor for is to sell or buy something where i need to trust the other side. Or to discover a good plumber/electrician/etc.

Not sure if its worth $1.5B considering Craiglist/Amazon/ClickCall/Angieslist/Yelp are good enough alternates

vadym909··on How did we create a society where we can’t afford to live in our own country?
ofcourse it is talked about, but is a losing proposition as most homeowners wouldn't stand for it. Renters don't make up enough to oppose it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_Proposition_13_(197...

In some cases this keeps rent low as homeowners with 2 houses paying low property taxes can afford to charge lower rents.

vadym909··on Bay Area hammered by loss of jobs: Lack of affordable housing strangles hiring
Too many Chinese buyers, rich businessmen, corrupt bureaucrats, made money speculating on Beijing real estate and middle class speculators with children planning to study in the US have flooded the housing market from Vancouver, Seattle to SF Bay area. I guess they probably form at least 10-25% of buyers.

Just making overpriced metros ineligible for foreign buyers could ease the pricing pressure.

vadym909··on Zucktown, USA
With an average tenure of < 2 years at these companies now, subsidized housing may force people to stay in companies longer especially if they have families. I'm not sure they can recreate Kodak/Rochester type place as there are so many rich companies vying for the same people.
vadym909··on Ikea has bought TaskRabbit
Why couldn't Ikea just use TaskRabbit for business when its customers ordered service. Why buy TaskRabbit and ruin it?
vadym909··on Saudi Arabia Agrees to Let Women Drive
Don't know whether to be happy this happened or sad that it took so long!
vadym909··on Google signs agreement with HTC
and Apple is going to sit back and say "Oh Wow- Didn't see that coming"?. Don't bet on it- Apple will claim violation of their agreement.
vadym909··on Cost of Employer-Provided Health Insurance Rises Toward $19k a Year
About time for someone to start offering an insurance plan where all consultation is via facetime/video chat and expensive non-critical operations are done in Mexico or a ship parked in Int'l waters close to major cities on either coast. Only get an emergency room insurance for the US!
vadym909··on Startup wants to build tools for lawyers to speed up legal services
Just do it Justin. Make it cheaper for the public to fight their cases and be massively successful. If Uber and Airbnb can get away with it, so can you. If people paid attention to the naysayers nothing would ever change in the world.
vadym909··on Equihax
If its only the score you want, cant you get that from creditkarma for free?
vadym909··on Mercedes-Benz will electrify its entire car lineup by 2022
Did anyone tell the Arabs yet? Qatar wants to spend $200B to host a few week long soccer championship in 2022 http://gulfnews.com/business/economy/blockade-vexes-qatar-s-...
vadym909··on Volvo acquires Luxe
How can you be a tech company and expect to make tech company margins when all you do is aggregate demand, parking spots and valets to match them. Luxe making $3/hr x 200 valets and maybe a bit more on the parking arbitrage during peak hrs.

Sounds like any of the local garage joints. I feel some markets are best left fragmented.

vadym909··on Amazon to Build Second HQ in North America
Agree. Atlanta is a great choice.
vadym909··on To Understand Rising Inequality, Consider Janitors
That is the loophole. Technically, it is possible to hire an outsourced firm to do the work if it is 100% turnkey outsourced and done outside of Apple. You often see this type of outsourcing happen with legal and creative type work.

However, more often, the contractors are onsite and doing exactly what other Apple employees do and are managed by fulltime employees of Apple. In this case the law says those contractors should have been classified as employees of Apple not the contracting firm, even if their employment contract says otherwise. see Vizcaino v. Microsoft Corp

vadym909··on To Understand Rising Inequality, Consider Janitors
Good point - in the race to offer superb benefits to its best employees, companies made it harder for themselves to directly hire low skill and low pay employees. After all you can't afford to offer free massages and laundry to the guys delivering groceries for you making $15/hr or the receptionist making $20/hr.
vadym909··on To Understand Rising Inequality, Consider Janitors
This problem happens when a leading company decides to use contractors to lower its cost. All other companies that are competing with it now have to do the same or they operate at a disadvantage. The workers then lose any leverage because they now can only pick between multiple contract jobs.
vadym909··on To Understand Rising Inequality, Consider Janitors
The regulations already exist. Companies aren't allowed to classify contractors if they do work similar to a fulltime employee or what would be considered full-time work. Like work long term at the company site. The outsourcing happens by finding and taking advantage of loopholes with contracts, firing contractors after 18 months and betting the costs to settle a lawsuit is cheaper than paying benefits to 10s of thousands.
vadym909··on Uber's New CEO
I wouldn't be so sure - Ola is a lot more popular in India and using Uber is usually a giveaway that you may not be familiar with the routes.
vadym909··on Uber’s board wants Expedia CEO Dara Khosrowshahi to be its next CEO
yup- he's bound to miss the next big strategic thing that everyone else can see, because that's the only thing he did at Expedia!

C'mon dude

vadym909··on Catching the Great American Eclipse at 35,000 Feet
They're like McDonalds. Not fancy but consistent in getting you there, OK service and no attitude.
vadym909··on Amazon cuts Whole Foods prices
Bezos is really a socialist. Instead of focusing on profits - he passes on the efficiency gains to customers. The investors in AMZN are funding discounts to consumers.

He doesn't need to cut wages or layoff workers. He could hire every worker laid by retail and still want more.
