utopian3··on IBM using quantum optimization for transaction settlement with Barclays
This is a claim by IBM at the recent Q2B19 in San Jose... I would have preferred to editorialize this as a "claim", but didn't per HN's rules.
utopian3··on U.S. legislation on spread of cyber tools passes after Reuters investigation
> The legislation directs the State Department to report to Congress within 90 days on how it controls the spread of cyber tools and to disclose any action it has taken to punish companies for violating its policies.

Good.

> Under U.S. law, companies selling hacking products or services to foreign governments must first obtain permission from the State Department.

Are these requests all available under FOIA?

utopian3··on Thousands of Google’s cafeteria workers have unionized
> Or they could just leave.

Who? Google or the employees

utopian3··on Thousands of Google’s cafeteria workers have unionized
Sue the state for allowing it? Honest question— Is that a legal argument? If laws don’t exist, how can you sue the state for not enacting them if it doesn’t violate a constitutional right...
utopian3··on The battle to save America’s undercover spies in the digital age
Yes, family members were notified too
utopian3··on Japanese ink supplier Seiko Advance produces colors for Apple’s iPhones
This doesn't conflict with what I said. A public reference is something he can approve, and sure, he can tweet his own words.
utopian3··on Generalized Knights
What is the K in that last graph (F5) and why did it move compared to previous?
utopian3··on Japanese ink supplier Seiko Advance produces colors for Apple’s iPhones
Sometimes a "public reference" is part of an enterprise's contractual negotiation. They can then use this (Tim Cook's visit + quote) to garner future sales.
utopian3··on Google’s Monopoly is Stifling Free Software?
Google’s typical approach is more like, “shoot first, ask no questions, and provide no contact method”.
utopian3··on 36C3 Staff Assaulted Me for Political Reasons
There’s video evidence at the bottom. I casually follow CCC but am not familiar with all the sub-groups /clicks, so was a bit hard to follow. I Hope those who did the assaulting are held responsible and banned
utopian3··on Designing a service for password-less temporary access to resources
Username block is a denial of service against that user.
utopian3··on Is College Still Worth It? The New Calculus of Falling Returns [pdf]
Look up agency nurses [0]. When they're paid hourly being begged for work (as OP mentioned), it's usually for a nurse who has specialized skills that can hop between hospitals/ER/offices. Essentially, they're contractors of the agency, and the hospital pays the agency. Can't recall if they're W2 or 1099 though

utopian3··on Ask HN: Teenager’s parents asking for tech: Python vs Excel.
Both. Sometimes I use Python, sometimes I use a spreadsheet. Sometimes I ingest the spreadsheet into Python, and sometimes I ingest it via a bash one-liner. The right tool, for the right job.
utopian3··on I killed my teenager’s fancy college dreams
The debt load will be severe. The US doesn't have a balanced budget, has a growing deficit at all levels (federal, state, municipal), and politicians are promising "free college", when we have bigger issues (child poverty, homelessness, healthcare, DEBT)?
utopian3··on You can't just rename your IT Ops team and call it DevOps
I've met many smart people from large enterprises who said, "I'm the DevOps [guy|team|person]" with a straight face. Generally, I believe they know it's wrong, but their leadership didn't, and they were just eager to move the needle a little bit that they accepted.
utopian3··on State Support Helped Fuel Huawei’s Global Rise
Agreed. Does Ericsson have a comparable 5G offering? I’m wondering why I never see their name come up when articles are written about avoiding Hauwei
utopian3··on Uber Founder Travis Kalanick Is Leaving the Company’s Board of Directors
Is that book any more worthwhile to read than the dozens of articles that have been published since 2017? Debating adding it to my audiobook queue...
utopian3··on Uber Founder Travis Kalanick Is Leaving the Company’s Board of Directors
Anecdotally, I’ve heard the same. Some drivers have even volunteered this information when I don’t ask.
utopian3··on An overview of why the US has problems with Huawei
Shouldn’t you be able to make a hardware backdoor look like a bug. I mean, imagine if Intel’s predictive branching (meltdown) bugs were intentional... it could stay hidden for years and look like a mistake
utopian3··on Hedge funds listened to Bank of England briefings a few seconds earlier
Then it wouldn’t be “insider”, it would be public. The term insider designates that it’s non-public. If you make it public, then some new piece of information would become “insider” information that others don’t have. You can’t operate a business 100% transparently
utopian3··on Ask HN: Partial Bootstrap for a SaaS Startup
> What I liked was we could focus on making a product first, which is hard to do when you are essentially solving someone else's problem.

Isn’t solving someone else’s problem the point of a product?

utopian3··on More Than Half of Doctors Get Industry Payments/Meals
I'm not convinced that meals are the issue. Payments/kick-backs are the issue. Meals are an exchange of "please listen to me for 30 minutes talk about our {product/solution} to these problems", and anecdotally, it's a time when these groups can question/challenge their product. I work in software, and I will listen to a vendor talk about their product for a "lunch and learn". It's a time to also get your questions answered amongst your peers.

> anecdotally it's much more pervasive in those groups.

I feel like that needs a source, but I know you mentioned it's an anecdote.

utopian3··on NASA’s X-59 Quiet Supersonic Research Aircraft Cleared for Final Assembly
Wow, shouldn’t that be a safety concern? Fuel leaking all over the airbase prior to takeoff?
utopian3··on NASA’s X-59 Quiet Supersonic Research Aircraft Cleared for Final Assembly
I’ll be super excited to have low-to-null-boom supersonic transcontinental flights! But if this becomes a passenger plane, what kind of fuel efficiency would that have? Are supersonic aircraft more or less efficient (oranges and apples I presume).
utopian3··on List of Statements Independent of ZFC

utopian3··on Stolen Airpods
Might have better luck posting on an Apple user forum. Hope you find them!

utopian3··on “Snowcrash” to be HBO series, compete with actual early Metaverses for viewers
I wish they’d spend more time on sub-plots, character development, etc. If HBO removes all the sex scenes, they could probably squeeze in an extra episode of actual content per season (I’m being slightly sarcastic).
