unsatchmo··on Software development with AI is starting to feel like cooking steak
Why is everyone being so damned precious about software? Software is not fine wine or a nice cigar.
unsatchmo··on Why I stopped angel investing after 15 years, and what I'm doing instead
If she’s rich and married a successful tech founder, I don’t understand why she didn’t get a lawyer to draft these investment papers to keep herself from getting fleeced. Like the amount she was dropping could probably have been recouped from a buyout without much fuss if the contracts were a bit more assertive.
unsatchmo··on Claude Code Emacs Mode
Really well done claude-code integration for the Emacs editor

Video about it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8sCVLmFyyU

unsatchmo··on Apple M3 Ultra
You're correct about the weights: each machine could in fact store all of the weights. However I think you still have to transfer the activations and the KV-Cache while performing inference.
unsatchmo··on The Theory and Technique of Electronic Music (2006)
Glicol looking super cool! Reminds me of ChucK https://chuck.cs.princeton.edu
unsatchmo··on Working with jumbo/unity builds in C/C++
This is silly. If I’m only rebuilding 1 file out of a 200 file source base, I guarantee the non-unity build will be faster. Just the number of characters I have to tokenize in this thought experiment should be enough to convince. If this isn’t the case then you’re doing some sort of n^2 c++ boost every header includes most other headers shenanigans and you need to stop that rather than doing a unity build.
unsatchmo··on GPT-4o
No, I just watched it closely and it definitely said un platano
unsatchmo··on An analysis of the Rabbit R1 APK
Mobile devices don’t have the memory or the memory bandwidth to run an LLM that’s big enough to be good at much. Plus the fixed battery and thermal constraints.
unsatchmo··on Fry's Electronics is closing all stores
I distinctly recall that location is where we bought the legend of Zelda back in the 80’s when it first came out. Gonna miss fry’s.
unsatchmo··on Ask HN: What does mastery look like in software engineering?
Length of time doing something doesn't imply mastery. It can contribute to mastery, but only if you're always pushing your skill to the next level I think.

For example: I know people who have been skateboarding for decades and are just barely OK at it. How you practice matters.

Headphones don’t require a treated room to sound excellent. Speakers will engage the natural acoustics of whatever space they live in and comb filtering will result. Almost always a great pair of headphones will beat a great pair of speakers in a listening test.
unsatchmo··on Agents raid home of fired Florida data scientist who built Covid-19 dashboard
Then you weren't watching the video. They drew guns after entering the residence. They pointed them up the stairs where she said her husband and two children were. Thus they were pointing guns at her children. Watch the full video on her twitter account, it happens about 10-20 seconds into the video.
unsatchmo··on Apple’s T2 security chip jailbreak
How can you all handle the low-resolution screen? I want one of those Lenovo laptops but with a higher resolution screen
unsatchmo··on C’s Biggest Mistake (2009)
The higher level languages are kind of the problem though. I need things like the ability to know the layout of my structs.
unsatchmo··on C’s Biggest Mistake (2009)
Porque no los dos? There are a few languages that nobody uses and also everybody seems to complain about.
unsatchmo··on Attention is your scarcest resource
50% of your time and energy seems like an impossible bar. At 16 waking hours, we are talking about 8 hours spent entirely on focusing on some task. That’s like the hyper optimistic assumptions of time spent that lead to bad estimates in software. I would say even the 10x engineers I met only focused for 5-6 hours a day max, so 30% focus.
unsatchmo··on Apple’s Relentless Strategy, Execution, and Point of View
This article was written by a former VP of software at Microsoft. You are simultaneously saying that MS is successful in some way that Apple is not and also saying that one of the folks that helped lead MS to success over the last 20 years isn’t competent enough to comment on just how competent and successful Apple has been for the last 15 years. Just drop the bitterness and read the dude’s writing, he knows what he is talking about.
unsatchmo··on ThinkPad T480 is my new main laptop which runs FreeBSD
I really wanted to run FreeBSD in my T470s and the lack of hardware support pushed me over to Ubuntu. I loved setting up FreeBSD and it felt snappy for a lot of stuff but it would be cool if some of the devs who do live on laptops would just release a package they tune for their particular hardware.
unsatchmo··on No One Gets Rich by Shunning New Cars and Lattes
In Silicon Valley, the down payment on a house could buy you a mansion pretty much anywhere else in the US. In Florida, you could get a waterfront mansion in many places.
unsatchmo··on Having Kids
When I was an intern at Apple in 2002, Steve Jobs gave a talk to our cohort. Someone asked if he had any advice and he replied “The things that are important to you now, will not be the things that are important to you later. Sorry, I know that vague but I don’t know how else to say it.” Now that I’m a father (and an actual adult), I think I understand what he means. Don’t feel ashamed because your priorities shift and you lose “ambition”. It could come back or it could be gone forever, whatever the case just try to enjoy what you have at that point.
unsatchmo··on The Slackification of the American Home
I’ll go a step farther and point out that it’s troubling that we feel like we need these sorts of tools to survive at home today. It seems to be a symptom of an ever increasing level of complexity in every facet of modern life.
unsatchmo··on Apple has pushed a silent Mac update to remove hidden Zoom web server
SIP cannot be disabled by anything running in the current boot session. Once the root volume is mounted, the SIP flags are set in the mountpoint. The root volume obviously cannot be unmounted while it is booted from.
unsatchmo··on Handy Keymaps in Vim
Xcode’s editor tabs aren’t tied to files.
unsatchmo··on Details about MIDI 2.0
My main beef with OSC is that there is no “there” there. It is hyper flexible at the cost of you needing to design your own meta-protocol. Like every single instrument that supports OSC has a different API with a mess of docs you need to read. Doesn’t really get me in the mood for making music. The DAW manufacturers had a very hard time creating user interfaces that studio engineers could use to configure OSC, and I think that was a main reason nobody ever used it as a synthesizer control protocol.
unsatchmo··on Details about MIDI 2.0
The main reasons I’ve seen VJ’s use MIDI is that they can slave their rig to the performer’s Ableton Live setup. I’ve got friends that have set up timing triggers to pyro and displays / lighting (interfacing with the VJ’s rig) within a few hours of stepping off a plane for a gig that night.
unsatchmo··on OP-Z Synthesizer
The decision to depend on an external device is going to suck in 30 years. This is where the OP1 shines. Meanwhile I have synthesizers from the 70's and 80's that still work well and sound amazing.
unsatchmo··on Tim Cook’s Message to 2019 Graduates: ‘My Generation Has Failed You’
Super underrated comment right here.

I'll take it a step farther: we are of the world. The world barfed you and me up, and we are made out of the stuff that makes the world up. The world is not "ours" or "theirs". We are it, and it is us. We are under the mistaken impression that we are separate from the world and that we "own" it. Until we realize this fact, we will continue to poison ours and each other's children.

unsatchmo··on Ask HN: I own stock in a startup that shutdown, what can I do?

unsatchmo··on Robotics company Anki shuts down
Uh, these folks worked like 80 hour weeks. And had “unlimited vacation”, aka no vacation. 1 week severance is a huge slap in the face.
unsatchmo··on Re2c: A free and open-source lexer generator for C and C++
Safari used to use re2c to identify Unicode Top Level Domains in order to avoid cross-site-scripting attacks. The Unicode support has no parallel that I’m aware of.
