tylermac1··on Hyundai promises to keep buttons in cars
> and happen to see my wife drive by, 40 feet away, through a concrete wall and some glass.

Is she okay?

tylermac1··on Poor sleep drove me insane, and my long path to recovery
Health care providers can order genetic testing to help discover how your body metabolizes tons of things.

I recently had it done and it illuminated an entire class of anti-depressant that has very little efficacy for me.

tylermac1··on Airbnb nightly rates shot up 36% in 3 years
To be fair, on the US site it's an "Early Access" feature that is in no way the default.

On airbnb.com.au, the full cost is the default view, and you can change the pricing to USD very easily in the bottom floating footer.

tylermac1··on Neuropsychiatric researchers rethink what depression might be
Also anecdotal, but everyone metabolizes these classes of drugs differently. I'm an "ultra-rapid metabolizer" of a slew of SSRIs, so they're next to worthless for me compared to other medications.
tylermac1··on Apple Introduces the New HomePod
You do not need the full HomePod to do multi-room audio. I have three HomePod Minis, one 1st gen HomePod, two AppleTVs, and an old Airport Express that I can use in any combination for whole home audio in sync. It works extremely well.
tylermac1··on Ask HN: How to find what I am really good at?
I'm recently diagnosed with ADHD-like symptoms and started on a low dose of Focalin about a month ago.

I can say for short-term focus and motivation it's been life-changing.

I would frequently flip-flop between getting sucked into rabbit-holes and having too many things going on at once. I now find that I can focus on tasks much better throughout the work day. My quality of work has improved as I've been able to better focus my time on what matter.

My doc has warned that over time I likely will need dosage increases, but for now it's been a wonderful experience with very few side effects (headaches the first day or two).

tylermac1··on How I regained concentration and focus
You will get out of your career what you put into it. I had kids at 24/26 and have found success relative to my peers in the field.

Sure there are sacrifices to be made with respect to career options. You can't (or shouldn't) just move cities every three years when a new job comes up, but working remotely can level that playing field quite a bit.

tylermac1··on The inventor of ibuprofen tested the drug on his own hangover
I found a "Backwoods Surgery and Medicine" book from 1910 at my grandparent's house. Half of the pain-related guidance involved cocaine in some form.
tylermac1··on The true costs of inflation in small-town Texas
this is just a reality of the economic policy we’ve chosen to pursue here.

Now who is "we" in this scenario?

tylermac1··on Ask HN: Have you noticed an increase of spam evading Gmail's filters recently?
The last few weeks have been really bad. I get 3-4 obvious spam emails a week now where I would maybe get 1 every 6 months prior.
tylermac1··on California Right to Repair Bill Dies in Senate Committee
> What method do americans tend to use to check that their politicians are voting in their interest?

Sadly it's usually directly correlated with how much money you give them.

tylermac1··on Boston University Undergraduate Costs Reach $80k
Is it more irresponsible for an 18 year-old to take on six figures of debt or for the lending institution to so easily give it out?
tylermac1··on Microsoft 3D Movie Maker Source Code
This how my team functions. It's such a refreshing work experience. Estimating work is hard, we shouldn't be punished or feel bad when we're off a bit.
tylermac1··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2022)
Stack Overflow | Multiple Developer Roles | Full-Time | Remote | Global

Come work on the website you can't live/work without! Multiple teams at Stack Overflow are actively hiring for various engineering roles. Stack is a .NET/C#/MSSQL shop but we don't explicitly require experience in anything specific (although it definitely helps!).

Stack is remote-first and provides many high-level benefits ($2000 onboarding stipend for home office equipment, incredible healthcare, 401K matching, etc)

tylermac1··on Tesla fired an employee after he posted driverless tech reviews on YouTube
The reason the failure videos float to the top is because failure in self-driving can result in serious bodily harm for those that have little to no control of whether they’re participating in a review or test.
tylermac1··on Internet Movie Firearms Database
There's a VW Rabbit crossing the street in the background.
tylermac1··on Six dead after tornadoes destroy Amazon warehouse near St Louis
This came across my Twitter feed just now: https://twitter.com/LCampbell_35/status/1469815411462000647

Seems credible based on photos.

tylermac1··on Six dead after tornadoes destroy Amazon warehouse near St Louis
I definitely get the Amber-alert-style phone alert for Tornado warnings in my area.
tylermac1··on Ask HN: Best Ergonomic Chair?
I have the Ergochair 2 from Autonomous and love it, especially for "ass comfort".

I've worked from home for 6 years and it's been the best chair I've had personally.

tylermac1··on Ask HN: Whatever happened to Wolfram Alpha?
Many thanks to WA for getting me through high school and college calculus.
tylermac1··on And this AMA is officially closed. (Aurora self-driving)

tylermac1··on Johnson and Johnson says its Covid booster shot provides increased protection
In your linked article it explicitly states that the booster shots aren't "needed" because they would do more good as initial doses in unvaccinated people, not that it also wouldn't help already vaccinated people.
tylermac1··on No One Wanted A&W's Third-Pound Burger (2016)
Apparently there's a drastic difference in the quality of A&W between the US and Canada.

From what I've heard A&W in Canada is a top-tier fast food chain while it's barely hanging on in the States.

tylermac1··on Ask HN: What tangible benefits did you get from spending time on HN?
I found my current job on here. It was on a Who's Hiring post awhile ago. One of the better things to happen to me and my family in years.
tylermac1··on Amazon hires 427,000 people in 10 months
In the United States I would say it depends where you live. I'm a Democrat in a forever-red state. My vote for President will never matter as long as the Electoral College is there.

I still vote for state-wide and local matters and that is where my vote really does count.

tylermac1··on Amazon hires 427,000 people in 10 months
Individual effort isn't going to break up a company Amazon's size.
tylermac1··on Several Apple Services Down
I wonder if they leverage iCloud services under the hood for images.
tylermac1··on Donald Trump suggests delay to 2020 US presidential election
Oregon does vote-by-mail and it's been very successful.
tylermac1··on Google to keep employees home until summer 2021
Hey fellow South Dakotan. I've been working remotely here for over 5 years. If you want someone to chat with my twitter is tyler_mcentee
tylermac1··on Apparent absence of covid transmission at hair salon with face covering policy
It's really not as bad as everyone says. I've had to have the same swab for other reasons and it takes less than a second.
