twidlit··on Lars Rasmussen: Why I quit Google to join Facebook
When you look at it zoomed out, Facebook combined disparate web avenues (chat, contacts, forums, game portals, bboards, adspace) into one place and added a thick air of mass adoption. This is hardly world-changing innovation-wise but it is game-changing in making the web more usable and understandable. Facebook is a fork of the whole web (Open web vs Facebook Web). I am betting the farm that this is what internally facebook is running with. This is a powerful motivator because they can justify to themselves and to everyone in the company the act of copying>improving elements of the open web into it. This is why a Facebook email, search, OS is inevitable.

In short - my definition of Facebook. its the web in the CONTEXT of your social circle and that has changed the web biz game, it has only begun to change the world 'proper' and thats what i think excites people like Lars.

twidlit··on Qwiki - First impressions?
I agree but they are pitching it to the consumer web not educational institutions.
twidlit··on Qwiki - First impressions?
Its a nice-to-have and in a very competitive market (information retrieval). it goes up against the following competitors.

a. reading Wikipedia b. searching on Google c. asking questions on social networks / forums

Its flashy and attractive but doesn't make the task more efficient and or grant obvious benefits. Might have a market in Education or Product showcase vertical but as a web consumer play? not going to be huge IMHO.

twidlit··on Goodbye, MacBook Pro. The New MacBook Air Is That Good.
He's the other dog humping Mr. Jobs' other leg. So to speak.
twidlit··on Icon search engine
I have been using this for months and the interface is really good and the rights management filter is a very nice touch.

I am hoping it starts indexing/storing vector files soon or maybe have accounts for the artist/shops behind the icons so that people can easily contact then hire them from the site itself.

twidlit··on Tweet is cheap
In other words the conversion rate from tweeting to activism is too low.
twidlit··on Holla - An open source Campfire
I felt so stupid for about 10 minutes repeatedly trying to find the demo username/password in this thread and the github docs. until i realized that there was a signup button...
twidlit··on Ask HN: Any desperate things you did just to keep your startup alive?
You're GF's HN about line is awesome.
twidlit··on Ask HN: Any desperate things you did just to keep your startup alive?
I think it was more desperate than genius since it was nothing to do with their product and the goal there was to earn money to sustain them further. The expo>shortage>CNN coverage is an example of a genius move by the same guys.
twidlit··on Tell us your naughty stories
That's very hacky of you.
twidlit··on Ask HN: how many years have you "wasted" on failed startups? And any regrets?
That quote is awesome. I will use that to recruit people in my startup. Thanks quote-source-that-scottw-cant-remember!
twidlit··on Facebook Disables All LOLapps Games and Apps
So does Facebook. :)
twidlit··on REST in peace, SOAP
Wordpress + Blogger API is still XMLRPC which feels icky to hook up into. :)
twidlit··on India’s richest man has moved into world’s biggest private residence
I wondered if they were showing a building still under construction.
twidlit··on ZestCash is Not Good.
This is what was lost when blogs overwhelmed journalism. Fact-checking, accountability and misaligned curation but I am hopeful blogs will evolve over time to incorporate them back.
twidlit··on Lets make November "Launch an App Month", who's with me?
Am i in reddit?
twidlit··on Ask HN: Why are web startups slow to expand abroad?
Forgive me but doesnt white labeling implies some sort of written agreement preventing white labellee (?) from stealing those codes? from my limited understanding white labeling is just licensing the product sans branding?
twidlit··on End of the Road for Xmarks
I think the main reason here more than anything, is the founder's are not just into it anymore.
twidlit··on Facebook Is Secretly Building A Phone
Haha, should've known someone will apply that arbitrarily typed bit.
twidlit··on Facebook Is Secretly Building A Phone
everyone you/I know = 0.00000001% of Facebook's users.
twidlit··on Facebook Is Secretly Building A Phone
Awesome. Microsoft does search, Google does mobile OS, Apple does social networks, now Facebook does phones. Its an all out tech war.
twidlit··on DuckDuckGo vs Goliath - An interview wth Gabriel Weinberg [audio]
Probably the best interview about Gabriel Weinberg.
twidlit··on Cuil Goes Down for Good
Strange how an unfunded startup with a single founder (DuckDuckGo) is getting better results than a $30million backed one comprised of a bunch of ex-Googlers.
twidlit··on DHH Commissions his own Supercar - the Pagani Zonda HH
For a guy running a "lifestyle" business, he's doing pretty good...
twidlit··on Ask NH: When is it better to launch?
This is the best written post i have ever read with regards to launching. http://www.startuplessonslearned.com/2009/03/dont-launch.htm...

Summary: there are two types of launch - product and marketing launch. do the former ASAP, the latter when you have all your ducks in a row.

twidlit··on A few random thoughts on building communities

twidlit··on Ask HN: What if the iPad came from Microsoft, first?
For some reason, I forgot that MS did make tablets. Anyway, I think the perception that the iPad succeeded because it had less features is false. The reason it succeeded was because it expertly worked on top of an existing ecosystem of the iOS and boosted by the Apple brand. If you take those two out I think it wouldve had a hard time in the market hence touting that it succeeded because it had less features is misleading.
