twa999··on Japan passes revised penal code with harsher punishment for cyberbullying
> yelling “fire” in a crowded theater

this phrase will never go away, the fact that it stems from a 100 year old supreme court decision that used it as example why speech in opposition to the WWI draft was not protected free speech under the first amendment is still funny besides the fact that it was later overturned.

_definitely_ not it Bucha.
twa999··on BND Intercepts Radio Traffic Discussing the Murder of Civilians
> Correction: An earlier version of this article stated that the BND had intercepted radio traffic discussing murders of civilians in Bucha. It stated that the radio traffic had been linked to the bodies photographed in Bucha. However, further research has revealed that the communications can only be geographically assigned to the region north of Kyiv, even if they show clear parallels to the killings in Bucha.

that's a pretty big correction.

twa999··on Canada to ban foreigners from buying homes
good first step, but now ban corporate landlords if you're really serious.
twa999··on Germany has seized control of Gazprom Germania
so the russians are going to be happy about this move then?
twa999··on Germany has seized control of Gazprom Germania
> Germany has seized control of a local unit of Russian natural-gas giant Gazprom, saying it will do 'what is necessary' to maintain energy supply in the country

this action doesn't make much sense then, does it?

twa999··on Russia to legalize software piracy
thank you world bank economist. You truly have the best interests of the people at heart.
twa999··on Russia to legalize software piracy
Imagine if U.S. politicians decided to go to war on behalf of corporations and their interests. That'd be crazy.

twa999··on The “misinformation problem” seems like misinformation
"missing context, misleading"

you just got fact checked

twa999··on The “misinformation problem” seems like misinformation
this piece encapsulates the mindset of mainstream libs like Matty, 1 billion stupid takes, Yglesias perfectly and can be summarized as "yeah maybe these normal people were right on some things and I dismissed that without knowing anything, but I was still right to dismiss that because they're stupid".

it's now safe for Bari Weiss to ask some questions on TV that "normal people" have been asking for quite some time now and were called all sorts of things by the same people.

We will see more articles like this.

twa999··on Rust Moderation Team Resigns
Of course, it's not known what really went on internally, but something like this doesn't really come as a surprise.

This is what you can expect when you put people with a questionable history of adhering to CoCs or are activists rather than developers in critical leadership positions.

twa999··on Return YouTube dislike count
> their own content on authenticated API requests

of course you can still see your OWN dislike but not the overall ratio, but the uploader can see that. what's your point exactly

twa999··on Return YouTube dislike count
there will be code or even memes, not an easy task. twitch still has problems with that, kids will always find a way around that
twa999··on Return YouTube dislike count
yes, they removed the dislike count to shield creators from "attacks" to improve their mental health, so the only one you can see it now is the creator. YT is either very stupid or their lying about their motive. I wonder which one is it.
twa999··on Return YouTube dislike count
the new dislike count will just be spammed "dislike" comments.
twa999··on New York's largest healthcare provider fires 1,400 unvaccinated workers
a normalization of a papers please policy in everyday life will have lasting consequences for which demands companies make on their workers will be perceived as normal and how politics and unions will handle this.

My current feeling is that sooner or later this will collapse and burn in whatever form. this rapid downward spiral this country has been in for the last few years is not sustainable for much longer..

twa999··on Bitfinex just spent $23.7M in fees to make a single Ethereum transaction
if it's mined the only possible way would be to bribe the miners to revert the blocks by paying even more (like time bandit attack) or renting soooo much hashpower to create your own fork.

If it's not included yet you need to send another transaction with the same nonce that sends yourself 0 ether but with a higher gas price asap, this is not a guarantee however because the miner would probably still go with the transaction that is more profitable for them and because the fee was so high it got included in under 1 minute.

So once this transaction landed in the (public?) mempool it was gg.

twa999··on What do Germans fear the most?
> but they don't want to accept younger people to work

if you're an EU citizen you can move to germany and work there. this creates high incentives for workers from poorer eastern european countries to work in germany but send a huge chunk back to their family. some industries would not exists without this model, most notorious asparagus harvesting or private nursing services.

Germany accepted millions of migrants since 2015, but it's highly doubtful that this will be a net positive within the next century. Most of them are unskilled and only granted asylum which is temporary and by german law asylum seekers or migrants with temporary resident status are heavily restricted from taking up work. I guess the argument once was, why allow them to work if they will be deported anyway soon. But usually this is a long legal process leaving them in a limbo state for years. There are special programs however to train them to be nurses to obtain permanent residency. But it is unlikely that then german refugee policy from ~2015 will be a net benefit for social security etc.

twa999··on How the Wire’s Omar Changed TV
I'm a bit numb after seeing so many obituaries about people who have died due to drugs, including people I knew personally.

This news comes shortly after the Sackler family finally got away with defacto mass murder.

At this point, it is pure speculation, but I wonder if this is also yet another case where the product was laced with fentanyl. last year alone they counted ~100.000 drug related deaths in the US. it's madness. Fentanyl is wiping out entire rural communities.

I don't have an answer for how to stop this or at least slow it down, there are just too many factors at play, including floods of cheap fentanyl smuggled into the country from china.
