turnersauce··on What Even Are Microservices?
This is basically Conway's Law in practice: microservices aren't created because of technical boundaries, but they emerge because organizations need team boundaries.

turnersauce··on What’s it like to live on less than $2 a day?
I agree, such a positive tone encourages complacency. And the reality is that we could do so much better: https://www.jasonhickel.org/blog/2018/8/30/the-moral-egregio...

"We shouldn’t be looking at the cost of ending poverty as a percentage of total world income, but rather as a percentage of the income of all the people who are not poor; say, those who live on more than double the poverty line. In 1990, it would have cost 12.9% of their total income to end poverty. In 2013, it would have cost only 3.9%. According to this measure, our capacity to end poverty has improved by a factor of 3.31."

turnersauce··on Show HN: Let's end the Programmer Salary Taboo

turnersauce··on Earth as a nuclear furnace (geothermal heat is mostly from radioactive decay)
It's funny that this is coming up now - just this week, there was a pre-print on arxiv.org that explored the possibility of a planet being heated (possibly enough to become habitable) by dark matter annihilation in its core: http://arxiv.org/abs/1103.5086
turnersauce··on Flux: Better Lighting for Your Mac
You could change the settings to a location at the equator, and maybe one or two timezones to your west. (I understand that having more customizable settings would be a better alternative, but I thought I would offer up my hack).
turnersauce··on Superconductivity Near 20 Celsius
This has been posted before, and there was much interesting discussion: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2041675
turnersauce··on No evidence for circles in WMAP claimed by Penrose and Gurzadya

turnersauce··on Possible Cause of Bee Die-Off Is Found
Unfortunately, it still asks for a login.
turnersauce··on Tell HN: An Observation
Maybe something like Reddit's "rising" page would help. Basically, somewhere that would catch all of the stories that only got ~4 upvotes on the front page, but would filter out the ones that didn't get any.

turnersauce··on New Kindle Leaves Rivals Farther Behind
I don't find the Nook's touch screen to be "balky" at all, at least in comparison to any touchscreen phone. In fact, I think that the use of a touchscreen instead of a hardware keyboard opens the door for a lot more design flexibility.

turnersauce··on Teen Trades up on Craigslist from Phone to Porsche in 2 Years
This guy went from a paperclip to a house: http://www.oneredpaperclip.com/about/.

A couple of my friends actually got a barbecue from him off of Craigslist. Sadly, I think the transaction only involved money.

turnersauce··on Apple Donates MacPaint Source Code To Computer History Museum
What I want to know is why the latest Apple OS doesn't come with a paint program.
turnersauce··on What would a TV show about computer programmers look like?
From my experience, the male characters in Big Bang Theory aren't far off from reality. However, I don't like how the two women physicist characters portrayed have both been complete nymphomaniacs.
turnersauce··on Apple selling unlocked iPhones in Canada
The state of wireless in Canada is depressing, although slowly improving. The instant that Wind goes live in Victoria, I'm switching!
turnersauce··on In Case They Didn't Come Back From the Moon
I certainly can't think of a lonelier place to die than the moon.
turnersauce··on The dumbest ad ever.
I'm not really sure if the author is correct about what's happening. That all depends on exactly how much of Panasonic's revenue comes from selling professional quality SLR cameras versus its cheaper point-and-shoot models. Anyway, I don't think that sales of the former are in any kind of jeopardy because of cell phone cameras.
turnersauce··on The Most Detailed Image of Our Galaxy Ever Taken
As I responded to a similar question, I believe that these images are created through a composite of Spitzer images taken at different wavelengths, where the colours have been added artificially. There's more information here: http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap080605.html
turnersauce··on The Most Detailed Image of Our Galaxy Ever Taken
Yes. Since we are near the "edge" of the Milky Way, we have a great view of the centre!
turnersauce··on The Most Detailed Image of Our Galaxy Ever Taken
I think that the title is a bit misleading. Indeed, this image is the most detailed infrared image of the galaxy[1]. Also, it is the most detailed image of the galaxy centre, since Spitzer can see through the huge amounts of dust that obscure the centre of of the galaxy in the optical wavelengths.

Caveat to my first point: with the advent of Herschel (which also performs in the near and far infrared wavelengths), more detailed pictures of the Milky Way emerged[2], although they have yet to image (or maybe just release) a full mosaic.

turnersauce··on Hubble Discovery: Massive Star Booted from its Home
I suppose that they meant to say that the traveling star was 90 times more massive than the sun[1]... this reporter seems awfully confused. A little proofreading goes a long way.

turnersauce··on Apple's Arrogance Stokes Android Gains
Oh dear, as if this article needs another reason to add to the list of why it is terrible... My apologies for blaming you for the error.
turnersauce··on Apple's Arrogance Stokes Android Gains
I don't mean to be pedantic (and I certainly don't mean to defend this article), but the author doesn't claim that the engineer was fired; they say, "Apple may yet fire the engineer". Which is true, I suppose - Apple may yet fire any of their employees. Nevertheless, it is still a ridiculously speculative thing to write in a "news story".
turnersauce··on Typography for Lawyers
I picked up the habit of putting two spaces between sentences in elementary school, and have not been able to shake it since. Luckily, this problem is automatically corrected in latex!
turnersauce··on Ask HN: What's your favorite April Fools Joke today?

turnersauce··on ProTips: How to Live 25 Hours a Day
I really wanted to read that article, but I had to close it and get back to work after reading tip #1.
turnersauce··on The 10/20/30 Rule of PowerPoint
I think that Beamer is a good alternative for those who want a relatively nice-looking presentation without shelling out $2000 for a Mac + another $80 for iWork.
