tthun··on Microsoft is busy rewriting core Windows library code in memory-safe Rust
I don’t work in the field but do you know for a fact companies like NSO don’t use memory exploits for their attacks ? Majority of the “published” attacks is probably a better assertion.

Don't see this attributed but one of the biggest "right to work" initiative called probably had lot to do with this "National Rural Employment Guarantee Act".

Do you have a handy list of first check VC’s that you can share ?
tthun··on Americans are poorly served by their grocery stores
I am not sure how this article got past any editorial checks. First they state prices are too low in the US to make any profit, then on the next paragraph goes on to talk about “yet” Americans getting served less. Finally reverting back complaining Americans are not getting a good deal.

author also use gross profit of Walmart, which sells everything from salt to guns, as a measure of profitability for “grocery” stores.

What are the “peddling” here - dark store as a concept ?

Believe it or not .. casts are carried by Christian [0] and Muslim families converted generations ago .. upper cast by choice and forced on lower cast [1]

I wish Tesla would cut the crap about self driving tech (which is probably driving up their margins and their stock value) and bring more affordable mass market cars to market. Clearly selling high margin cars is good for business but one can hope.

tthun··on U.S. State Department phones hacked with Israeli company spyware
I probably would rephrase parent’s comment as “one of the Most powerful political organization”

As a congressman/woman while considering a policy position against Israel AIPAC is probably the most powerful. Any case comparison of strength between corporate funded lobbyists and an organization with singular ideological is pointless.

tthun··on U.S. State Department phones hacked with Israeli company spyware
> That seems surprising given that they spend a fraction Probably by design to “seem to” spend only small amount of money, so that even people who know how to search on google for key facts won’t immediately see their outsized influence.

From an nytimes article [0] on this topic and lot of anecdotes on fall outs from taking policy positions against israel (not anti-Semitic)

“ Unlike the National Rifle Association, the Human Rights Campaign and other powerful grass-roots advocacy organizations, Aipac, which is bipartisan, does not endorse or raise money for candidates. But its members do, with the organization’s strong encouragement.”

“Traveling to Israel on a trip financed by Aipac’s education arm is practically a rite of passage for freshman members of Congress.”

tthun··on Ask HN: Why is Docusign a $50B company?
if you implement a Digital Signature over eSignature, this issue goes away - both parties can get a copy of the signed document and never be manipulated
tthun··on Ask HN: Why is Docusign a $50B company?
There are two main aspects solved by Docusign - Implementation of ESign Act - there are specific requirements that needs to be met for an E-Signature to be valid, such as Informing the signers of an option to opt out, retention of signature records etc.

- Non-Repudiation features using Digital signatures - this is where Docusign (and hellosign and friends) is clever in using a LTV Enabled [0] Digital Signature on signed documents that allows the documents to be validated in Adobe reader. This IMHO allows them to get around lot of retention and compatibility requirements of eSign act. Adobe Digital signature verification is visual and you don't need an audit of your SaaS vendor to verify that the electronic signatures made will be available to validate 10 years later. keep in mind, Adobe requires a certificate issued by one of the ATL member issuers [1] - this is adding to the moat these companies have.

[0] https://stackoverflow.com/questions/26090558/what-does-not-l... [1] https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/approved-trust-list1.html

Unfortunately if you need a digital certificate solution you are stuck with purchasing a document signing certificate from one of the ATL issuers [1] and Digitally signing your documents with a visible signature.

tthun··on It’s time for Americans to buy less stuff
A rather simplistic implementation of this could be to create regulations to require trash/refuse processing centers and incinerators in every zip code. Consumerism generates so much trash that well off folks are able to ship to poor areas - out of sight/out of mind. Making the effects from waste processing more “equitable” should change behaviors.

tthun··on Baserow.io – Self-hosted Airtable alternative
> sanity as a developer Low code is targeted at app building experience for non-developers/citizen coders. Curious if you have personal experience with the Salesforce platform and can provide details on some of your biggest gripes with it. I have used it with great success in building simple “textbox on database” applications that are easy to maintain and change.

> hearing Salesforce alone What do you think about heroku?

I am genuinely interested in alternatives that is cheaper and don’t charge per user.

tthun··on Baserow.io – Self-hosted Airtable alternative
Low-code database builders have been around for a long time , Airtable did not come up with this concept, just a slick UX/ implementation of one.

tthun··on Baserow.io – Self-hosted Airtable alternative
Not a Joke. I am recommending Salesforce.com's PaaS offering (used to licensed as force.com, now called "platform" [0]). Expensive, but it is IMHO the best low code cloud platform there is that has got every aspect (Apps, Identity, Security, ACLs, Workflows and Triggers, APIs) right.

[0] https://www.salesforce.com/editions-pricing/platform/

tthun··on Baserow.io – Self-hosted Airtable alternative
Try force.com (fully featured developer account is free with limits), very stable and fully featured PaaS with long tail of features. On a quick review Airtable as a slick/modern UX on less sound architecture than force.com, probably shipping features in a breakneck pace.

tthun··on The Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drug Company
is this sort of the “free market” example of disruptions in healthcare space that could may be move healthcare in US towards a model where you pay for what it actually costs instead of the inflated and opaque pricing that private health insurance thrives on ?
tthun··on Congress is set to ban most surprise medical bills
It should be illegal
tthun··on Congress is set to ban most surprise medical bills
If the underlying problem (in-network discounted rates for services and out of network excess that the service provider can charge - honestly this practice should be made criminal - imagine Sams club selling a computer to non-members for 10x the cost the members pay) is not addressed, the surprise bill just becomes someone elses prolem (other patients end up paying).
