tpmx··on Tech CEO sentenced to 5 years in IP address scheme
The US justice system seems very odd to this European. Then I realize that if the EU project ever were to reach its presumed goals (by some), we'd probably end up with something pretty similar in terms of "oddness complexity".
tpmx··on Science is bringing historic Apple varieties back to life
Because HN applies various adjustments to submitted post titles - without notifying the poster. A more honest approach would be to have a two-phase submission process, where the submittee is allowed to fix any mistakes made by the algo.
tpmx··on Spotify Re-Invented the Radio
I cancelled too, btw. I found myself only listening to stuff pushed via their ML playlists and not much else.

At the moment I'm back to listening to my 80s/90s/00s CDs (but ripped to FLAC).

tpmx··on Spotify Re-Invented the Radio
Ah, that's what you're upset about. They probably paid more to the Obamas and those british royalties, in case that's any consolation.
tpmx··on Spotify Re-Invented the Radio
Shocker, creating music costs money.

Which one is it?

1) Spotify isn't paying copyright holders enough.

2) The free Spotify version is too limited.

I mean, if we're going there, there is this comical yet informative and strangely relevant Brooklyn Nine-Nine (thanks djbusby, for the correction) scene:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5S74kKimFs

Jake (Andy Samberg) and Charles (Joe Lo Truglio) form an unlikely alliance with Jack Danger (Ed Helms), a nerdy lead investigator at the United States Postal Inspection Service, as they embark on a mission to crack the case to bring down a drug dealer.

tpmx··on Best Buy stores to stop selling DVDs, Blu-ray in 2024
They also have a problem with older noisy 1080p sources. Badly upscaled to 4k and then bandwidth-limited it sometimes looks comically bad.

When I tried out the 4k Netflix option in early 2023 I found myself wanting an option to downgrade to their 1080p encoding for a few of the shows I was watching.

I was told Netflix hired really smart people for like 300-500k/year for the express purpose of avoiding stupid shit like this.

tpmx··on Tech CEO sentenced to 5 years in IP address scheme
If he had used e.g. the USPS mail service, would it then have been mail fraud instead? Similar sentencing?
tpmx··on Best Buy stores to stop selling DVDs, Blu-ray in 2024
Netflix 4k is laughably bad in comparison to Blu-ray 4k. Blu-Ray 4k has about 10x higher bitrate.
tpmx··on Florida men scammed more than $1M out of Uber Eats
(Not that I'm aware of.)

Web pages don't really work without in-page/dynamic javascript any longer.

On the other hand it's now cheaper than ever to just have a full-blown webkit instance in the cloud and just sync/stream the dom tree paints to the client. A bunch of products do that, I think.

Back then we had a moat because

a) Opera's Presto used so much less memory than Webkit - after having gone through so many painful memory optimization efforts, particularly with Japanese mobile browser deliveries, but also with Symbian.

b) We figured out a way of making 90% of the web javascript work be keeping "tabs" around on the server for a few minutes and then just replaying carefully selected input events and capturing the output, with some kinda clever heuristics. That combined with the low memory usage did it.

Webkit used like 10x more memory per tab/window back then, iirc. And RAM was expensive.

tpmx··on The History of Cover Flow
Stage Manager is surprisingly great, IMO. Frustrating at times, but mostly great.
tpmx··on Florida men scammed more than $1M out of Uber Eats
(russellbeattie... I recognize that name... small world. Sorry for digressing. Russell: I've got to thank you for https://www.russellbeattie.com/blog/1008770. We all felt so proud after reading that review! Finally someone who got it. I was the person who led the product design/engineering effort during its first decade.)
tpmx··on Florida men scammed more than $1M out of Uber Eats
"This worked because Uber Eats provides couriers with prepaid cards they can use to purchase up to $700 to complete customers' orders."
tpmx··on Tell HN: Is the HN frontpage boring? Use the 'hide' links to remove dull things.
There's a '/snip-story?id=...' request sent to HN when you do it. The response is the metadata about the story that is slipped in at the end of the page.

So maybe?

tpmx··on Ask HN: Do you believe cars are a burden to have?
When I lived in a city it kind of felt like that. Now I live in the countryside...
tpmx··on Tell HN: Is the HN frontpage boring? Use the 'hide' links to remove dull things.
My personal progression:

1. Hmm, I guess I can use this to hide posts that I would just get really angry about and just want to get out of my sight. I suppose it must be a mental health feature, the Californians are really into that that these days.

2. Hmm, I guess I can use this to hide uninteresting stuff and then also get new, potentially interesting stuff on the front page.

Presumably people smarter than myself went to #2 immediately...

EFF doing something that pertains to their charter as it stood e.g. 10 years ago? I'm all for it.

Uh, try 1.8x longer today than in the 1990s.

tpmx··on Signtime.apple: One-on-one sign language interpreting by Apple
This one could have the benefit that the "interpreter" is aware of common apple-specific product topics and be able to directly solve problems themselves, advise on stuff, etc.

And then fall back to interpreting when more expertise is needed - with the added benefit of having a baseline understanding of the topics discussed.

tpmx··on Google has sent internet into 'spiral of decline', claims DeepMind co-founder

tpmx··on iSponsorBlockTV v2: SponsorBlock for TVs and game consoles
Youtube recently emailed me to say that they are cancelling the Youtube Premium Lite plan (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=37649777) that I've been on for 3 years.

This looks interesting.

tpmx··on Jesus nut
Is there a single major redundant aspect in a (single-rotor) helicopter's ability to stay airborne?

I thought helicopters were so expensive because every part had to work and last, or else.

tpmx··on Best Buy to End DVD, Blu-ray Disc Sales
The end of Blu-ray 4k would mean we're doomed to suffer the low-bitrate crap streaming services call "4k".
tpmx··on 'Dumbphones' make a comeback: 'No one calls me anymore'
I both loved and hated J2ME. It kinda had what you needed though, apart from the often "openly" idiotic device implementations that were kind of the norm. Only Sony Ericsson had a great one (fast, high code quality, sane security policies/prompts). Nokia came at second place with medium performance, high code quality and outright user-hostile security policies/prompts.
tpmx··on Removal of Mazda Connected Services integration
Mazda is (otherwise) a great and relatively speaking small car company. I agree with ChuckMcM; this is sad.

Note that the complaint appears to have been filed on behalf of Mazda North American Operations.

It was then marketed as 10 nm.

Family reunion with 30-40 people? - Yes, if you don't disturb anyone's home or the land.

Can you stay in one place for a week? - Sure.

Fishing? Hunting? - generally no, unless you get a permit. Fishing permits are easy to get. Fishing recreationally in the ocean does not require a permit.

Thanks! Fixed. I actually wrote regardless at first but it seemed wrong when I revisited the comment.
