towaway1138··on Robert Crumb: 'I am no longer a slave to a raging libido'
There's a lot to be said for falling libido, as I'm noticing as I get older. In the mean time, following Internet advice, there's a lot to be said for rubbing one out before making any important decisions, especially those involving a target of desire.
towaway1138··on Lady Conference Speaker: Speaker BIOS
This seems like "log for girls". Is there any way whatsoever that speaker bios need to differ by gender?
towaway1138··on Self-driving cars may be more likely to hit you if you have dark skin
To the degree that this is actually so, it's likely that human-driven cars have the same problem. The main difference is that it will be reasonably easy to permanently fix the issue with the former.
towaway1138··on San Francisco median one bedroom apartment rent hits a new peak of $3,690
When headhunters contact me about SF (or even Bay Area) jobs, I just scoff and shut them down. If you're fresh out of school, no family, and willing to live in a hovel for some interesting life experience, sure. But if you're an adult, it's no way to live. And putting kids through it is frankly unethical.
towaway1138··on Women’s stories from the tech trenches – and how *YOU* can help
None of these stories would even make my top ten list of work horrors. Coffee is for closers. No one cares how many arrows were shot into to you, how much blood you've lost, who betrayed you. Want respect? Close.
towaway1138··on ASK HN: Has anyone adopted Chrome OS as their primary OS?
I did for a number of years, mainly as an SSH client, and for web-based stuff. The automatic OS updates are great.

A noted limitation is that there's no good X11 story. The new Linux subsystem looks very interesting, but it only works on some hardware, and you'll have to do heavy research before buying to figure out if your new Chromebook works.

All that said, I'm thinking of moving away from it. Using Chromebooks for everything requires trusting Google a lot, and because of their various recent behaviors, I'm willing to do that less and less these days.

towaway1138··on “Just Ban the Nazis,” and the Exasperation of Sociotechnical Platform Politics
Perhaps I should have said "Nazis", i.e., fascists, totalitarians, etc. The kind of people described in this brilliant essay: https://quillette.com/2019/02/21/what-my-days-as-a-marxist-t...

An important part of this is agreeing on who is not a Nazi. Someone isn't a Nazi just by dint of disagreeing with me. Certainly they're not a Nazi for having voted for President Trump, or favoring well-ordered and lawful immigration policies.

The real deal is amazingly rare. In my long life, I've never met an actual Nazi (by your tests), nor even been in the presence of anyone I imagined might be one.

towaway1138··on “Just Ban the Nazis,” and the Exasperation of Sociotechnical Platform Politics
It's easy to determine that Nazis are bad. It's far harder to agree on who the present-day Nazis are.
towaway1138··on President Trump Calls for 6G Technology
It'll be hyooooooge!
towaway1138··on Harder programming questions do a worse job of predicting outcomes
I'm about your age, and this is very relatable. My last job hunt took about six months. Among the other high points, I passed the on-site day at Google, passed the hiring committee, and then had an executive reach out to quash my hire.

I did end up finding something I'm enjoying.

Anyway, just wanted to send you some support. Keep your head up and keep going. You really only need one offer.

towaway1138··on America’s Professional Elite: Wealthy, Successful and Miserable
> The upper echelon is hoarding money and privilege to a degree not seen in decades.

Is this another way of saying they're being offered high salaries and taking them?

towaway1138··on There’s a Dangerous Racial Bias in the Body Mass Index
Ugh. It's not "bias", it's simply new science. Or perhaps "new-ish", since most of this has been known for decades.
towaway1138··on [dead]
I know a boy that created a paper-mache "bomb" for his art class. He was questioned without his parents present, first by the principal and then by the local police. His life will never be the same.
towaway1138··on Police Boss Unloads on Smollett Over Alleged Race Hoax
I hope they throw away the key. He's done more harm to the downtrodden than any Klansman ever could.
towaway1138··on US Cities Are Becoming More Dangerous for Cyclists and Pedestrians
It's so rare here that I actually call it out to my wife when I see a properly lit bicyclist at night.
towaway1138··on Dystopia Is What Results from the Attempt to Create Utopia
Thomas Sowell's book The Search for Cosmic Justice talks about this sort of thing in the context of social justice. However well intended, trying to do the impossible can produce atrocities.
towaway1138··on Ask HN: Should I take antidepressants?
Sympathies--much of that sounds familiar. Someone else mentioned SSC here. I tried some of the stuff he mentions, and one that probably helped some was tianeptine sulfate, which you can buy legally as a supplement, without a prescription. No withdrawal zaps, etc. Definitely do your homework if you're going to try this. And I'd stay away from tianeptine sodium, which sounds like it has far greater addictive potential.

As far as clinging to women, some combination of age and several really awful breakups/betrayals seemed to rid me of that.

Good luck.

towaway1138··on California Considering Lanes with No Speed Limit
What could possibly go wrong?
towaway1138··on DigitalOcean's Engineering Code of Conduct
Wish more companies would post theirs. Makes it easy to spot places I wouldn't be caught dead working at.
towaway1138··on Nearly Half of US Female Scientists Leave Full-Time Science After First Child
Indeed, if you stare at the bar chart for a moment, you'll realize that a sufficient explanation is that women more often have the option to reduce their hours or stop working entirely. In our culture, men generally don't have the privilege of doing so.

I've lived this myself and also watched many instances of it in friends and colleagues. Is anyone really shocked by the idea that new mothers might decide they'd like to stay home and raise their kids?

As a man, I'd almost have killed to stay home and have my wife keep working, but that's just not how it is.

towaway1138··on US Cities Are Becoming More Dangerous for Cyclists and Pedestrians
I recently moved to a city with "excellent" bicycle infrastructure. Contrary to what I might have imagined, this seems to make things more dangerous for all. The extra lanes, markings, lights, and signs increase distraction, making it harder to concentrate on what actually matters--people.

In addition, almost no bicyclists actually drive lawfully here. It's typical to see them going the wrong way down streets, blowing stop signs, red lights, and crosswalks. And often when a rather nice bike lane is at hand, they'll choose to ride down the sidewalk instead, endangering pedestrians.

I'm not sure what the answer is, but as a pedestrian, I fear bicyclists more than cars.

towaway1138··on What I've Learned from Hacker News
Valid concerns, to be sure. In my case, I'm trying hard to get away from "outrage"-type posts, and it would be nice to have a better way to filter these out. Currently, I pretty much just drop sites entirely once this sort of thing starts.
towaway1138··on Overwatch Randomized Trial on Gender
I don't understand why people ever play with voice chat enabled. I don't want to hear streams of ungrammatical foul language, and I certainly don't want to hear people slapping their kids, etc. TMI.
towaway1138··on Overwatch Randomized Trial on Gender
> about as well done of a study as we could ask for from a non-academic research level

Unfortunately, there's a good reason why academics use proper experimental design. Without it, all you really have is suggestive noise, if even that.

towaway1138··on What I've Learned from Hacker News
One of the problems with "karma" sites like these is that everyone sees the same metric. But the comments you love aren't likely to be the same ones I love.

I'd like to see a system closer to a movie/music suggestion system. Personalize the crap out of everything, show me the stuff I'll probably love, and don't even bother showing me trash I'll obviously hate. And for God's sake, make it trivially easy to permanently killfile other users.

Yes, this is computationally more involved. But the result would be something that would make everyone happier (except perhaps inveterate trolls).

towaway1138··on The Internet Locusts Descend on Ristretto Roasters
It sounds melodramatic, but I'm starting to wonder whether our society can survive this sort of thing.
towaway1138··on Bernie Sanders Is Running for President Again
She's probably the only other candidate that Trump could possibly win against. Will the Dems really go for a repeat?
towaway1138··on What It's Like to Be a Black Mathematician
As a statistician or economist, I would actually be quite shocked if the proportion was often close. This rarely or never happens in other fields, even ones where there is essentially no possibility of such supposed impediments. Randomness happens.

Instead of stealing someone's thunder by putting them on easy mode, give them the opportunity to kill it.

towaway1138··on Sailor kissing woman in iconic VJ Day photo at Times Square dies at 95
Imagine the shitshow if he did that today.
towaway1138··on Jussie Smollett Timeline: Mystery Deepens as Police Review Case
Apparently it's a hoax. The mystery is why this is on HN.
