towaway1138··on [dead]
This sort of moral panic should be slapped down hard. The 1890s are over, and no, we don't need to protect our womenfolk from perverts who went to med school hoping for free gropes, no matter what races are involved.

It's time to take a deep breath and grow up.

towaway1138··on The Unix-Haters Handbook (1994) [pdf]
I bought this when it came out, but thought it was horrible. The only good bit was the preface by one of the Unix authors (Ritchie?). The rest just seemed like whining by people that didn't really get the Unix philosophy.
towaway1138··on Puzzling number of men tied to Ferguson protests have died
Probably largely random. But beyond that, they sound like the diametric opposite of upstanding and boring citizens, so not really that surprising?
towaway1138··on School Districts Are Banning Teachers from Using DonorsChoose
This doesn't seem particularly unreasonable. This is a poor method of funding education, and rife with all sorts of potential for abuse. Not to mention that generally we want the poor kids in the district to be funded as well as the rich kids, and this mechanism will work against that.
towaway1138··on Ask HN: How do you read the news without getting depressed?
From my perspective, news has become far more angry and vicious in the last couple of years. Writers who in the past were more or less kindly and factual (if sometimes a bit goofy) have started putting out really hateful stuff. It's shocking and, yes, depressing.
towaway1138··on “This just such a shockingly intelligent thing for any politician to say.”
I'm aware of these, and to a degree suffer from them directly--I just don't think "left to die" is an appropriate description. Furthermore, the group most affected by these issues, aging white males, are also the group AOC stands most ready to throw under the bus. That is, I think she's a hypocrite on this subject.

In any case, hypocrites come and go, but these problems are indeed very important and in need of some organized solutions. Our "oppressive" traditions and social structures have been cast aside, and many jobs have been outsourced to elsewhere. I'm watching the twenty-somethings around me try to deal with this wonderful new society, and it's very sad.

In my work, I like to get the new systems working before deleting the old ones...

towaway1138··on “This just such a shockingly intelligent thing for any politician to say.”
Shockingly ignorant, as usual.

No one in our society is "left to die" because they don't have a job.

towaway1138··on Seattle Is Dying
Went on a job-hunting trip there a couple of years ago. Certainly many nice things about it. But after considering its problems, and the local toxic politics that appear to stand in the way of progress towards solutions, we nope'd out.
towaway1138··on Stop Using `rm` in Bash. Use `del`
My alternative is to think carefully before hitting return. As a bonus, this works for other commands, too.

Also, '\rm', as many distributions insist on aliasing 'rm' by default.

towaway1138··on Meritocracy doesn't exist, and believing it does is bad for you
Maybe so, but I still want a surgeon who's going to get the job done.

towaway1138··on Despite Crackdowns, Neo-Nazi YouTube Videos
You're arguing for limiting speech. I'm arguing against.
towaway1138··on Despite Crackdowns, Neo-Nazi YouTube Videos
> the material changes this rise in anti-intellectual, conspiracy minded, anti-science free speech crusaders are attempting to cause

You lost me here, as in my experience, such activity has been in significant decline over my lifetime. We're actually living in a golden age where science and reason are ascendant.

Using this as a pretext for silencing people that don't agree with us seems particularly pernicious.

towaway1138··on Death of the Calorie
Some believe in the three laws. Downvoters, not so much. :-/
towaway1138··on Death of the Calorie
Note that the laws of thermodynamics only specify the minimum number of calories you must consume (i.e., to not lose weight, or to not die).

There is no real maximum to the amount of calories your body can waste (as heat or by excretion). Nor is there any law saying that we're all equally efficient (or even close).

towaway1138··on Amazon Has *Added* over 100 Jobs in New York Since Cancelling Their HQ Plans
So? Yes, they will continue organic growth in NYC, like everywhere else.

The HQ plan would have been a massive jump and very likely an increased growth rate thereafter. That won't happen now.

towaway1138··on Meritocracy doesn't exist, and believing it does is bad for you
Maybe, but I still want my surgeon to really good at surgery.
towaway1138··on Alphabet-made Chrome extension is designed to tune out toxic comments
This would be awesome if I get to choose what I consider to be toxic. I'm not interested in Google's opinion.
towaway1138··on Boeing 737 Max Hit Trouble Right Away, Pilot’s Tense Radio Messages Show
Fair enough. But please don't post such links on HN.
towaway1138··on My Salary Progression in Tech
I have. My gross is now about one-third of what it was a few years ago. Briefly, a really ugly divorce that I didn't see coming pretty much sucked the life out of me.

I'm inferring that you have a family to support. (If it's just you, I'd seriously consider declaring bankruptcy.) I can relate. For what it's worth, this can be the lot of men in our society. I don't think it's an indication that you did anything wrong. Good luck.

towaway1138··on Attraction Inequality and the Dating Economy
This is an outstanding article with life-changing insights. Everyone should read it. Certainly explains a lot of awful and baffling things I've seen and experienced.

Unfortunately, though it lays out the problem clearly, it doesn't present much in the way of solutions, and indeed, there may be few good ones. It may be that sex and mating is ultimately just a Kobayashi Maru, not so much to be performed successfully as with a dignified, sad grace.

towaway1138··on Leaderless Debian
Arguably rpm/yum is still a kludge compared to dpkg/apt.
towaway1138··on Russia blocks ProtonMail
Also ran into this. Even had a Google manager I've known for years go to bat for me internally. No dice. Which is crazy, since web logs would have shown that the account was completely and always under my control.

Like a distant god, Google gives and Google takes away...

towaway1138··on Ask HN: Has anyone successfully been able to completely quit using Google?
No, but there's a lot to be said for knocking down the easy 90-95% of it...
towaway1138··on Exposed DB of 'BreedReady' women probably not as bad as it sounds
So many tasteless jokes--so little time. Also, it's 2019... :-(
towaway1138··on Ask HN: What open source project, in your opinion, has the highest code quality?
There are a lot of ways to judge this, but obvious candidates would be GNU Emacs, the GNU coreutils packages, etc., and the Linux kernel itself. (Probably also the BSDs, though I don't know these.)
towaway1138··on The Genderless Digital Voice the World Needs
Anyone complaining about gendered voices seriously needs to get a life. If I call the airline, should I really be outraged that the person answering sounds like a female? Or alternatively, a male?
towaway1138··on The Case for an Older Woman: How Dating Preferences Change with Age
The article seems to hint that men selecting younger women is some sort of moral or character issue, which strikes me as crap. The right reason for not dating someone a decade younger (regardless of your gender) is that young people are stupid. Really, really stupid. You don't want to spend the next twenty years having conversation with a person like that.

I met my wife on OKC, using a age selection range of +/- 10%. (I didn't expect to find anyone at all interesting more than a year older than me, and indeed did not.) She's a couple of years younger, but arguably more mature. It's awesome.

Beyond that, looks are (sadly) crucially important. Pick someone who's a careful match, or perhaps slightly less attractive. Missing on this is a recipe for misery.

Also, many older women are asexual. Beware, if it matters to you.

towaway1138··on Is porn making young men impotent?
Came here for the dumpster fire, was not disappointed.

My own take: Erotica is a good thing to the degree that it takes the edge off of libido. Being dragged around by your "little man" is a curse, and your life will greatly improve once you figure out how to stop this (one way or another).

Your first reaction to a naked woman should be "meh". It's only after you know her well that it might be more.

towaway1138··on [dead]
What an ass.
towaway1138··on SF libraries as sanctuaries for the homeless – Hollywood movie captures reality
Maybe it's unavoidable, but this is very sad to me. A library cannot simultaneously be a flophouse for the homeless and an institution for learning for kids. And unfortunately, in many cities, we've decided that the former matters more than the latter.

I would have been intellectually destitute as a kid had I not had weekly trips to the library. I lived in the middle of nowhere, and there were no adults around who knew anything about what I was interested in. Perhaps the web would now fill that need. Not sure, though. It was a magical place.
