tolstoshev··on The pull request hack is fucking magic
Developers discover community management - news at 11.
tolstoshev··on SEC notifies SolarWinds CISO and CFO of possible action in cyber investigation
Thoma Bravo is poison. They took over LogRhythm when I was working there and ruined it. If your employer is ever bought by then, polish your resume.
tolstoshev··on Yann LeCun and Andrew Ng: Why the 6-Month AI Pause Is a Bad Idea [video]
Dr Strange checked 6,438,347 timelines and in zero of them did an AI pause happen.
tolstoshev··on A case of fatal multi-organ inflammation following COVID-19 vaccination
My guess would be an undiagnosed case of HLH, which leads to your NK cells not functioning properly.

https://www.dana-farber.org/childhood-hemophagocytic-lymphoh...

I'm betting the vaccine triggered the cytokine storm, rather than a virus itself which the most common triggering event. It's such a rare disease that by the time it's diagnosed, it's too late to intervene with steroids and chemo drugs to stop the runaway immune system.

tolstoshev··on Numbers to Know for Managing (Software Teams)
Yep, Dunbar's number is what you are looking at for this phase change: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunbar%27s_number

So around the 150-200 mark.

tolstoshev··on The price of eggs in America cannot be explained by inflation alone
"I don't understand why you buy eggs at seven cents a piece in Malta and sell them for five cents." "I do it to make a profit." "But how can you make a profit? You lose two cents an egg." "But I make a profit of three and a quarter cents an egg by selling them at four and a quarter cents an egg to the people in Malta I buy them from for seven cents an egg. Of course, I don't make the profit. The syndicate makes the profit. And everybody has a share." Yossarian felt he was beginning to understand. "And the people you sell the eggs to at four and a quarter cents a piece make a profit of two and three quarter cents a piece when they sell them back to you at seven cents a piece. Is that right? Why don't you sell the eggs directly to you and eliminate the people you buy them from?" "Because I am the people I buy them from," Milo explained. "I make a profit of three and a quarter cents a piece when I sell them to me and a profit of two and three quarter cents apiece when I buy them back from me. That's a total profit of six cents an egg. I lose only two cents an egg when I sell them to the mess halls at five cents apiece, and that's how I can make a profit buying eggs for seven cents apiece and selling them for five cents apiece. I pay only one cent a piece at the hen when I buy them in Sicily." "In Malta," Yossarian corrected. "You buy your eggs in Malta, not Sicily." Milo chortled proudly. "I don't buy eggs from Malta," he confessed... "I buy them in Sicily at one cent apiece and transfer them to Malta secretly at four and a half cents apiece in order to get the price of eggs up to seven cents when people come to Malta looking for them."
tolstoshev··on One AI Tutor Per Child: Personalized learning is finally here
Reminds me of this concept from Ender's Game by OSC: https://enderverse.fandom.com/wiki/Mind_Game I've always wanted to play it after reading the book, and now it could become a reality.
tolstoshev··on Tim Cook bets on Apple’s mixed-reality headset to secure his legacy
There's two technologies that help a lot, both strange:

tolstoshev··on EPA orders Norfolk Southern to conduct all cleanup actions related to derailment
Why don't they put the hotbox detectors on the trains themselves? I'm cynically assuming cost?
tolstoshev··on The Undying Holiday-Suicide Myth
/me raises hand.

I remember a chart that was floating around that usenet group that showed you the ideal rope length for hanging yourself without either choking or popping off your head from too short/long. I think they sourced their info from this chart: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Official_Table_of_Drops

Good times.

tolstoshev··on The Chemistry of ‘Yes Minister’ (2017)
Reminds me of how Ozzy Osbourne didn't find Spinal Tap funny, and said that everything in the movie had happened to him including getting lost backstage: https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/ozzy-osbourne-didnt-laugh-this-...
tolstoshev··on Perfluorocubane is (as you would expect) weird

tolstoshev··on A pizzeria owner made money buying his own $24 pizzas from DoorDash for $16 (2020)
This reminds me of Milo Minderbinder from Catch 22 :)
tolstoshev··on Ask HN: How to build relationships in an internationally remote org?
I'm in a similar situation and I run a small group meetup program. I select 4 random people from across the company and have an hour long "get to know you" zoom meeting. That way you meet folks in a positive environment rather than waiting until there's a work problem that impacts them.
tolstoshev··on Glassdoor ordered to unmask former toy company employees who posted criticism
Reminds me of an adage that has served me well: "Write every email as if it will be one day read aloud in a deposition."

tolstoshev··on Blue Zones, where people reach age 100 at 10 times greater rates
My bet is blue zones are just places where they don't have good longevity records so you get a bunch of fake centenarians. That turned out to be the case in Japan: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-pacific-11258071 and I think also in Greece.

People were just keeping dead relatives "alive" for the social security or rent control.

tolstoshev··on Most hospitals aren't complying with price transparency rule
I get better price transparency at the vet than I do at any facility for humans.

tolstoshev··on Microsoft's low-code strategy paints a target on UIPath and other RPA companies
On the flip side, there's plenty of ugly, buggy, code monstrosities that have to be rewritten or refactored. This just means the professional developer gets to start with a clean codebase with the UI & processes already laid out as an example. Almost like the no-code is a working prototype in place of a requirements doc.
tolstoshev··on ZZT: Epic’s First Game
I went to highschool with Tim and remember when he was writing this in his parents basement while going to UMD. Little did we know what would come from his tiny shareware business.
tolstoshev··on I volunteered to be infected with 50 parasitic worms for a research study
I've tried it for celiac, but it didn't work for me. There's a whole underground economy of shipping people hookworms. They claim that about 80% of people with some form of auto-immune disease get benefit. I'm glad to see that there's more research being done in this area.
tolstoshev··on Statement of SEC Regarding Recent Market Volatility
I don't get why loaning out an already loaned stock is legal. Short selling should be limited to first gen loans. Otherwise it's like Beavis and Butthead in the Candy Store episode where they keep loaning the same dollar back and forth.
tolstoshev··on Our Dumb Security Questionnaire
One reason to us SaaS - if there's a hack you can blame them rather than taking the heat yourself. It's outsourcing of culpability.
tolstoshev··on How Silicon Valley destroyed Parler
That's the government doing it though, and not just the utilities deciding to cut off your power.
