tintin··on There is no point to distributing music in 24-bit/192kHz format.
Never mind. I read 192kbps instead of 192kHz. 24 bit might have some advantages but 192kHz not.
tintin··on 4 Years of HN Traffic
And still using one server? One thing I learned from PG is to first look at your code before upgrading the hardware.
tintin··on There is no point to distributing music in 24-bit/192kHz format.
I think this only applies to headphones. People also 'hear' sound with there body (skin). Maybe you could call it experiencing sound. And then there are resonating sounds that cannot be heard but help to create other sounds. But maybe this won't apply to a recording because your will record the result and not the tones that make the result.

This is a great article but I'm still not convinced people cannot have a sensation of sound out of there hearing range.

tintin··on [dead]
Used the brush tool. Sorry this is not the best online tool.

This is a Photoshop clone: http://pixlr.com/editor/ Even opens PSD's.

tintin··on Daring Fireball: Cookies and Privacy
They don't need cookies to track you when your browser footprint is unique enough (http://panopticlick.eff.org/). So you still need a tool like Ghostery (http://www.ghostery.com/) to disable the snippets that can track you.

But then again: when everybody is blocking Google and Facebook, how would they earn there money?

tintin··on About copyright
In this topic: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=3627606 dabent posted this comment: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=3627731

It's a great read. And the page about "put the hours in" reminded me of the fuzz about copyright. I thought I should post it on HN.

tintin··on Why Do Some People Learn Faster?
Isn't this all about interest? When you are interested in a subject you are more likely to try again and learn from your mistakes. People with an almost unhealthy interest in a subject (people with Asperger for example; they think Newton had this) are the brilliant people on the subject.
tintin··on Sam Sure & Giacomo
Maybe this picture will help you: http://www.creativeapplications.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/...

Now you have different options to display it. One is to map it on a 3D object and place a camera inside the object.

tintin··on Splash screens == sloth
Of course Blender is lazy loading as you like to call it. Why load features the user is not using atm? The base of the program is just way better than lets say Photoshop.

Ever checked an online Photo editor? (http://pixlr.com/editor/ for example after a quick Google). Open the page and there it is: your interface ready to use.

tintin··on Splash screens == sloth
You are wrong.

Everytime I start Blender (3D content creation suite) I'm blown away by the time it takes to start. Less than 2 seconds! Ready to use!

Do I call Blender a complicates program? Yes I do. The feature list can compete with the one of 3ds Max.

tintin··on New D programming language forum, written entirely in D
Funny that people notice this. I think this is how all pages on the internet should be! Lately I'm getting tired of all those fancy Javascript pages or pages build on bloated frameworks.

The speed of this forum has nothing to do with D. You can achieve this in a language like PHP as well.

Just skip the bloat (server and client side).

tintin··on Meetings: Where Work Goes to Die
More tips:

  * Always stand-up while meeting.
  * Not everyone can lead a meeting. Ask someone how can to lead the meeting. This can even be someone without interest in the subject.
tintin··on My Addressbook? Keep it. Telephone numbers are a disgrace to our generation.
These are not problems with phone numbers. 20 years ago I knew all phone numbers from my friends and kept them on paper. I still keep them on paper.

The points you describe could also be said about e-mail addresses and website addresses.

This is about people putting too much trust in (electronic) technology.

tintin··on My U.S. Border Nightmare
Most of the time it's not about your answers but about your reaction.
tintin··on A house designed like a web application
Reminds me of Christopher Alexander's book 'A Pattern Language' where he explains exactly this.

I even think the programmers of 'The Sims' and others used it. Sometimes it's also called Object-Oriented Design.

tintin··on Tesla Model S Options and Pricing
I do realize this. But I was talking about the Tesla in its current form.

Ofcourse it might get a success some day. Maybe we won't have to charge them because they all will have a small nuclear reactor.

My point is: a lot of people are still thinking 300 miles on one battery charge is not enough. And maybe this is true when you go on holiday or something. But most of the time people are fine driving an electric car from home to work and back.

tintin··on Tesla Model S Options and Pricing
I still think it won't succeed. Electric cars have been build since 1904. But range have always been a problem. Ofcourse charging your car becomes quicker. But I still think a lot of people won't buy an electric car because they are afraid of not getting home.
tintin··on US bars friends over Twitter joke
Are you serious? Do you think you can't be tracked down by all the IP-addresses you are using?
tintin··on Cars kill cities
And ofcourse there is a car-less suburb of Freiburg: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/12/science/earth/12suburb.htm...
tintin··on Cars kill cities
Are you living in Amsterdam?

You have to wait years for a parking permit. And when you want to park your car you have to drive around minutes before you will find a place to park.

tintin··on How Much Processing Power Does it Take to be Fast?
Whoops I got my calculation wrong. It should be 10% indeed. So now I wonder why a GPU is needed...
tintin··on How Much Processing Power Does it Take to be Fast?
The screen resolution he mentions is 0.1% of a 1024x768 resolution. So lets say we need 1000MHz to render 1024x768. Then I think modern software is doing alright. Because today we calculate more color bits, keep track of all the input devices, output 'real audio', keep the device online and so on.
tintin··on Apple Reports First Quarter Results: $13.06 Billion Net Profit
Impressive but I can't help to think about the people who create all the Apple products.
tintin··on Introducing the HUD. Say hello to the future of the menu
Change the status of your chat client:

Normal: klik on icon right top -> set status
HUD: drop your mouse/stylus -> type the HUD command -> type to change your status.
In the future you will be less productive but have the gloss.
tintin··on Why was MegaUpload really shut down?
"Why in the hell is this nonsense being posted to HN?"

I think it's a very interesting business model. One way to kill the movie and music industry is to give artists a better place to sell there art.

tintin··on Salary Negotiation: Make More Money, Be More Valued
You are right. Money is the worst motivation for a job. Money is just a small part of salary.
tintin··on Tips for speaking at tech conferences
I always use white text on a black background for presentations. I thought that would give the best contrast. Does anyone know why black on white would be better?
tintin··on The Edge of HTML5
As a webdeveloper I hope this won't be the future:

  <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="chrome=1">
This might be the edge of HTML5, but is regression of the internet. Remember the "This site should be viewed in IE5 or higher"? I hated it back then, I hate it now.
tintin··on Piracy - You can't have your cake and eat it
Someone mentioned 3D printers in another post and got downvoted for it. But think about it.

You invested a lot of time into creating an object everybody likes. People can get it in a online shop and it will be send to there address.

Now a clever guy scans the object with a 3D scanner and is putting the model online. Everybody can now downloading the model on The Pirate Bay and print it at home. And they all say: "fuck that online store, it is way too much hassle and costs too much".

It's a difficult discussion. Therefore I think it's way to easy to just call making a copy not stealing.
