tintin··on Apollo 17 at Shorty Crater
Most of the pictures are taken with a lot of light (flashlight?) coming out of the camera direction. This picture for example shows it very clear: http://astropedia.astrogeology.usgs.gov/alfresco/d/d/workspa...

So there is light from the sun, camera and even earth maybe.

tintin··on Dial-up modem sound slowed 700% is 100% creepy
Even more amazing is Paul's Extreme Sound Stretch software that did the job! http://hypermammut.sourceforge.net/paulstretch/
tintin··on Surface: Between a Rock and a Hardware Place
You are right. Also take a look at the development of tablets.

In the beginning they were small low-res tablets. But people wanted a bigger screen -> bigger tablets with high-res screens. But people hated to type on the screen -> keyboards added. But people hated to hold it all the time -> stands are added. And suddenly it is looking like a laptop.

I think there is a reason why Laptops and Desktops didn't change that much in all those years.

tintin··on Modern robotics hits Hollywood. IRIS: The most advanced camera rig ever created.
I don't think the feedback of the servos will detect a human body part. These servos are very very strong. Maybe when it hit the concrete it will skip a step noticeable in the feedback but that's about it.
tintin··on Modern robotics hits Hollywood. IRIS: The most advanced camera rig ever created.
Here some action: http://www.botndolly.com/media#/medium/15

I think it's very scary standing next to a moving robot that close. It doesn't stop when you get in the way. Hope someone is holding a emergency stop button.

tintin··on Let Maya Speak For Herself
Maybe a stupid question: but do you need iTunes to install an .ipa file? I've seen some programs that can just install these files on any iDevice without the use of iTunes.

And isn't Xcode and an Apple acount enough to sign the app?

tintin··on Final thoughts on Windows 8: A design disaster
I can open a program in my quick-launch-bar with one click before you even typed the first letter of that program. Maybe it's not a design feature, but it gets in the way.

(And yes: I'm using Windows 7 with the Windows Classic theme.)

tintin··on List of Unexplained Sounds
Reminds me of the sound of ice. Some examples:

tintin··on I don't "get" art
Art is expression and communication. Some get touched by the message, some don't. If some people like to pay big bucks for art, just let them.

Some might say Tracey Emin is a bad artist. But I think here message is very clear: pain from being raped and losing 2 kids. It's a sad message.

Like Hugh MacLeod (gapingvoid) I like to say: "Worrying about “Commercial vs. Artistic” is a complete waste of time.".

tintin··on Hello Opera 12
This might also be a font-issue. Most of the time websites embed different font-types like eot, ttf, woff and svg. But some types lack font-hinting. It depends on the order in the CSS file which supported font browsers will use.
tintin··on 5 Million Farmers Sue Monsanto for $7.7 Billion
Since the site is down, another link: http://naturalsociety.com/5-million-farmers-sue-monsanto-for...
tintin··on Sunflow Rendering System
Sunflow seems dead.

Take a look at LuxRender. Source: http://www.luxrender.net/en_GB/source_code

[edit] also take a look at the forum: http://www.luxrender.net/forum/ There are a lot of nice projects related to LuxRender. From exporters to GPU rendering.

tintin··on 6.5 Million LinkedIn Password Hashes Leaked
I know a lot of companies just keep your account including your password in there database while you removed your account.

Can I be sure my account was totally removed when I removed my LinkedIn account? Because the "please change your password as soon as possible" won't help me much.

tintin··on WebGL: 80,000 particles
Is 80000 particles the limit?

With Flash you could render +300000 particles years ago: http://www.unitzeroone.com/labs/alchemyPushingPixels/

tintin··on Google bot now appears to emulate users interacting with the site
They also started looking at content above the fold and also monitor request time vs page loaded time for a while. I think it's great that Google is starting to monitor the user experience. It will keep people from building Javascript bloated sites that don't respond well.

I hope this isn't becoming a trend, but lately I see a lot of responsive sites that don't respond to user input. Maybe a little force from Google will stop this trend.

tintin··on Pixel-fitting – how antialiasing can ruin your logos and icons
Also note that SVG logo's are rendered far better than a scaled down pixel version. I tried a lot of different reduction methods but the SVG version was always "sharper". Just include it in your image-tag: <img src="logo.svg" alt="my logo">

I think you can use a background image as fallback.

tintin··on Unicode URL - ☃.net
I think this is very bad, security wise. Take this URL for example: www.paypaᥣ.com Ofcourse it depends on the font used and the characters chosen, but you can trick people into opening a site they trust.

(for those who don't get it: the L of paypal is not an L)

tintin··on Avoid News
One thing that struck me:

"Out of the approximately 10,000 news stories you have read in the last 12 months, name one that – because you consumed it – allowed you to make a better decision about a serious matter affecting your life, your career, your business – compared to what you would have known if you hadn’t swallowed that morsel of news."

When I was thinking about all the news I read on HN, for me there was a very small percentage that really helped me as a developer. But I'm still getting here more times a day...

tintin··on Analysis of the Human Bird Wings
There is nothing strange going on around the 20 second mark. The sun is very low and the wing is almost aligned to the position of the sun. You can also see the left tip is bended upwards, so the guy is clearly running around that tip. But because the lens is zoomed in it's a little hard to see the actual depth.
tintin··on Dutch man flies like a bird with selfmade wings
Ah, I totally missed that discussion. Thanks.

IMHO he is flying. With a kite like that and a little running speed you could generate enough lift. But I'm not sure if the flapping helps.

tintin··on Dutch man flies like a bird with selfmade wings
Note that it's not human powered. More on this blog: http://www.humanbirdwings.net
tintin··on Show HN: Free Unlimited Private File Sending (Beta)
This one is available.

"NOTICE: The Sendoid service is no longer available." "Sendoid's web interface was disabled on Wednesday, March 7th."

tintin··on Show HN: Free Unlimited Private File Sending (Beta)
Check your spam box. Worked for me.

But the developers should check why the e-mail ends up in the span all the time.

tintin··on Super-secret Google builds servers in the dark
Comparing lumen per watt, the T5 lights are still more energy efficient than most LED lights.
tintin··on Removing Windows 8 is better than...
Ranting about the Windows 8 Consumer Preview seems a bit unfair. It says "Consumer" and "Preview". Both words indicating it is not for the more advanced user.

At work we always use Windows Server Edition as workstation OS. I must say that those Server Editions are very good.

So if you don't like the bling just don't use the Consumer Preview but install a Server Edition instead.

tintin··on Our 3d printer is better than yours
With polygonal mirrors you have to wait for the perfect moment to pulse the laser.

I think these are just galvanometers. Seems like they have to 'predict' the motion of the mirrors for accuracy and speed.

tintin··on Our 3d printer is better than yours
Well the Ultimaker already did (https://shop.ultimaker.com/).
tintin··on Frighteningly Ambitious Startup Ideas
I think you are right.

I don't agree with PG when he is talking about Apple. "None of them are run by product visionaries" is simply not true. Steve Jobs had great respect for companies like Sony because there are product visionary companies. Sony, IBM, Philips, and a lot of others, all companies that gave us great products we now are using every day. But it took years to get there.

E-ink for example was created in 1997 and is still in development. But we all know e-readers. A great example of a visionary product imho.

tintin··on Font Awesome, the pictographic font designed for use with Twitter Bootstrap
✔ it's also good practice to check unicode first. Arrows for example are available in all shapes and directions. ➜ So if there is an icon available in unicode just use that one.
tintin··on A single tweet page is 2.0 MB
This HN page is about 1.2KB. Now tell me again why you need 2MB for a single Tweet page. Also take a look at the mobile Twitter site: http://mobile.twitter.com/bos31337/status/172156922491969536

Today PG posted some HN stats: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=3669947 It seems that HN is still running on one server!

Don't fool yourself. Twitter is bad design, not good.
