tims33··on Hermes: An open-source document management system
So this is basically like building Box for G Suite?
tims33··on Interactive California Reservoir Levels Dashboard
And Hetch Hetchy is here: https://waterdata.usgs.gov/monitoring-location/11275500/#par...

I'm assuming this dam is separate either because it is in a National Park and controlled by San Francisco.

tims33··on Lastpass Security Incident
Anyone know which cloud storage provider this was?
tims33··on The Cancellation of ‘Jihad Rehab’
Or both. It’s disappointing the movie was shunned the way it was. And it is disappointing NR writes such breathless headlines.
tims33··on The Cancellation of ‘Jihad Rehab’
The headline of a story about moral indignation is full of moral indignation.
tims33··on The Cancellation of ‘Jihad Rehab’
Two things can be true. The story is terrible and the publisher of the story is a part of the problem too.
tims33··on The Cancellation of ‘Jihad Rehab’
Terrible story. This should not have happened to this film. I do not know what has happened to a country which has free speech and press enshrined in it's constitution.

It is also sad that the National Review which paints itself as this bastion of objectivity publishes such breathless headlines.

tims33··on U.S. Army Chooses Google Workspace
How many $B has Microsoft made off of Excel formulas and keyboard shortcuts?

Not to say they aren't delivering value, but I work in a place where many people have only used Google Sheets their whole career. They can't imagine running a finance org any other way.

tims33··on Recording the Grateful Dead: The Culture of Tapers
Not only were they an incredible community, they were early internet pioneers too. rec.music.gdead was a very busy usenet community.
tims33··on Mcmaster.com is the best e-commerce site I've ever used
Mcmaster.com is also insanely fast. The reaction to every click is so incredibly responsive. There is something so pleasing about it.
tims33··on 2000-Watt Society
Totally agree. I think the premise of maintaining quality of life while dramatically reducing energy consumption won't bear out.

There is no successful path to stopping global warming that dramatically drives up energy cost or reduces quality of life. Plentiful zero carbon energy is the path forward.

tims33··on CA grid: real-time status
I love net metering, but long term it isn’t an entirely fair system. I imagine once they move off of that they’ll be able to have better incentives for those on solar with batteries.
tims33··on CA grid: real-time status
Where are the CA blackouts?
tims33··on CA grid: real-time status
Safe to assume you’re getting net meetering? That is likely more valuable.
tims33··on An Apple Watch for Your 5-Year-Old? More Parents Say Yes
It also let us delay giving both kids a phone.
tims33··on An Apple Watch for Your 5-Year-Old? More Parents Say Yes
It increases the autonomy. They get to go out and make decisions. And if I need to track them down because they are late for dinner it’s easy. We don’t use it for any draconian purposes.
tims33··on An Apple Watch for Your 5-Year-Old? More Parents Say Yes
We gave one to our 10 year old and earlier to our son when he was 12. It’s great for giving them the freedom to go to friends houses or do an activity for school, but also to find them if they’re running late or they weren’t where they were supposed to be. It’s helped end the stupidity of the play date and let the kids be kids.
tims33··on Apple Reports Third Quarter Results
100% agree. It is clearly a compromise of their user experience values in exchange for revenue on some slight above mediocre services.
tims33··on Apple buys a new campus in San Diego
So they can hire all the Qualcomm engineers.
tims33··on Apple Reports Third Quarter Results
Not if you use this option: https://www.apple.com/shop/iphone/iphone-upgrade-program
tims33··on Apple Reports Third Quarter Results
Sad to see "services" as a headline on Apple's earnings beat. I'm sure it is gratifying for Tim Cook, but this is going to be the thing that brings on much harder regulation for Apple.
tims33··on Senate Bill Takes Aim at Visa, Mastercard Credit-Card Fees
Opening credit to a network not affiliated with Visa or MC would be a huge change. It is hard to believe this would pass into law, but perhaps it is an opening salvo in a negotiation with Visa and MC.
tims33··on CNIL makes Google Analytics almost illegal in France
The US isn't going to copy and paste any foreign laws and codify them as US law. So it is likely the EU and US will have to forge a different path or the EU can ban everything.
tims33··on Stranger Things is being edited retroactively by Netflix?
I sort of love the idea of closing this very minor plot hole around Will's birthday. It definitely takes advantage of streaming and seems like a great use for the super deep fan base.

On the other hand, what Lucas did to Star Wars sort of helped with plot around Han Solo and Jabba, but also added gratuitous special effects that didn't change the story. Maybe there can be a standard of what is acceptable for post-release media edits?

tims33··on Average new car transaction price hits a record $48,043
It would be helpful to see the median price and how that has grown as well.

When we got our Subaru repaired recently the dealer said he had 20-30 new Subarus on the lot and normally it is closer to 200.

tims33··on Housing shortages are making homeownership unaffordable across the U.S.
The problem is so clear, but the NIMBYs still vote and increased interest rates may make this worse.
tims33··on OfficerBreaker – pptx/docx/xlsx password remover
Hopefully no one treated these passwords as an actual security feature.
tims33··on The Upside-Down Logic of Electric SUVs
Even the Model T dropped >60% in its first 15 years. Pretty weak argument here if the focus is solely about the cars coming off the line today.

tims33··on Hertz paid Accenture $32M for a website that never went live (2019)
The ultimate measure of a tech systems integrator is how many CIOs were fired as a result of hiring your firm.
