timeimp··on Scott Adams has died
Rest in peace, Scott.

Your Dilbert era was scary with how accurate it portrayed real life.

And your Coffee With Scott Adams era was impressive in explaining the goings on of life.

You will be missed!

timeimp··on Features lost across versions of macOS
If you're running an older version of Mac OS X, then you should try reading the "user manual" or "help guide" from your Mac.

Amazing to see Microsoft can manage decades of tech knowledge (for the most part) but Apple breaks stuff because it's the future

timeimp··on Features lost across versions of macOS
New macOS Settings app is an insult to everything Mac.

Sadly, while many here on the Orange Website may miss this, the numbers would (probably) show an overwhelming number of iOS -> macOS users.

timeimp··on Tiny, tamper-proof ID tag can authenticate almost anything
Provenance != DRM.

The ability to prove the origin of something over "Source: dude trust me bro" is critical to a great number of people.

But sure, let's stick with "yeah nah, this piece of paper says what's in the box is in the box so it must be legit" because FOSS is gonna get salty about this.

timeimp··on Star Trek: Borg – Remastered
This is such a great site, and game!

Thanks to whoever made this - the game oozes 90s / 00s and you've captured it perfectly!

timeimp··on Apple broke iPhone web apps in the EU for anticompetitive reasons – Tim Sweeney
Sounds like Apple is building this (in time) and simply putting out pithy statements so the ilk of Tim and his "omg, why don't you let us have you built for free crowd!!11!!111!!1!!" can all pile on and reveal their hand.
timeimp··on States, including CA and NY, sign heat pump memorandum
Wait, that style of air-con isn't common in the US?
timeimp··on Ruby's exceptional creatures
I'm sure Shopify would like to have a word
timeimp··on Remembering Bell Labs as legendary idea factory prepares to leave N.J. home
I got:

Access Denied - GoDaddy Website Firewall

Block reason: Access from your Country was disabled by the administrator.

from Australia.

I wonder why they'd block an entire country...

timeimp··on A decade-old Steam bug
This was a fantastic write-up!

Loops are hard and its even more amusing how optimistic CS2.exe runs when you supply the server to connect to.

timeimp··on How Australia’s ‘Bluey’ conquered children’s entertainment
I find it sad that even showing kids sliding on the wet tile floor is edited for "being safe" - let them learn why its a bad thing to do in the security of home!
timeimp··on How Australia’s ‘Bluey’ conquered children’s entertainment
The best part is how people are learning that the Disney+ version is censored.

Yes, a childrens show is censored, in current year.

Why? Because some jokes don't play well with adults, even though they go right over kids heads.

Have a Google for "Bluey censored" to see what I mean!

timeimp··on What should we know about APFS special files?
How sad that the Finder is now in the state its in.

Once it was joked about "Windows file transfer visits some friends" and now we have "Finder copies some files"

I hope Apple rights this course to make the UX consistent as it was in the pre-APFS days.

timeimp··on How the append-only btree works (2010)
I always have to add the "and off-by-one" at the end.

Nothing like reading memory you don't own!

timeimp··on UK court allows ANN patent saying computer programs exclusion does not apply
Section 12 seems to contain the real reason why this is a technical contribution:

> The judgment accepts an argument that moving data outside the computer system, in the form of a file that is transferred, provides an external (outside world) technical effect.

> When coupled with the purpose and method of selecting the file’s contents, this fulfils the requirement for a technical effect which avoids the computer program exclusion.

Sounds like these sorts of "decision matrix"-type ANNs are going to now be patentable if there is some kind of application of "special sauce" that can be used to select files or some other external component.

timeimp··on MLX: An array framework for Apple Silicon
>MLX is an array framework for machine learning on Apple silicon, brought to you by Apple machine learning research.

Does this mean its from Apple directly (as part of the machine-learning engineering team)?

timeimp··on Normal Operating Sounds
These are gonna be the new SFX in the modding community, I guarantee it.
timeimp··on FFmpeg 6.1 released
I thought so too!
timeimp··on The human body has 1.8T cells dedicated to defending it
I would advise anyone to watch the "Cells at Work!" anime.

I believe a real doctor made the series which explores how the human body works on a cellular level.

timeimp··on In Defense of Electricity Markets
I, for one, want Gen IV small-modular nuclear reactors built.

They solve all our climate change-related challenges AND they eat the waste of older generation reactors.

I fail to see why we're not investing in more nuclear over solar and wind (whose components are not usually recycled)

timeimp··on California Right to Repair Signed into Law
Parts pairing is still a thing.

I would love to see right-to-repair advocates and infosec advocates in a ring, fighting it out.

Why is it that consumers get salty because they can’t read what they’re actually buying?

timeimp··on Mom's Google Account Banned and Can't Talk to a Human
Contact your local member of Parliament or Congress and raise hell.

It’s an easy win for everyone.

As for _why_ - if someone else is using the account for content creation, it’s probably the source of these problems.

timeimp··on Kenton's House
I appeciate the Team Fortress 2 "Saxxy Awards" on that photo there.

How much has changed since then.

timeimp··on U.S. Senate bill crafted with DEA targets end-to-end encryption
Yes - because the public has a very, very short-term working memory.

The public pressure and ad campaigns _against_ these things have to be constant.

All it takes is 1 domino to fall then it becomes "well, if it is good enough for <other country>, its good enough for us!"

timeimp··on Microsoft enables booting PCs directly into cloud PCs
Ah yes, but will it let me show seconds on the clock in the taskbar / system tray?

That is the real measure of a remote PC.

timeimp··on The bill of materials for the Apple headset leaked
+1 for Australia.

People literally switched banks to get Apple Pay here.

I think the whole "chip-and-pay" thing in the US is so very laughable - everyone else has been with it for at last a decade.

It's a shame it took forcing merchants to wear the cost instead of banks making the terminals more affordable - then again, I am talking about the banks here.

timeimp··on Passage by 1Password: Add passkey support to your app or website
Once Apple and Google have pushed it out with their mobile devices, things will move along fast.

I'd argue within 5-ish years you'll start encountering people who have never used a username + password combo at all.

Passkeys are the future - but how they will work across ecosystems remains to be seen (without a subscription)

timeimp··on Legend of Zelda game sells 10M copies in three days
For those out of the loop: think Garrys Mod (GMod) meets the Zelda series and yes, it was made by Nintendo themselves.

The entire game is a fantastic example of well-designed map, gameplay, storyline / plot advancement, AND sandboxing all in one.

Incredible to think that its also running on seven year old hardware.

The emulation videos of the game running at 4K 60FPS on YouTube are astounding to watch.

timeimp··on Safari releases are development hell
Safari is to browsers today what IE once was: dread by those that have to support them.

I am yet to meet competent developers who have ever given two hoots about “super fastest browser #1!!” blog posts over feature completed-ness / spec-compliance.

I hope the C-level exec at Apple sees this and realises why more devs are going to go with Edge (lol) / Firefox support: the sales guys are running Apple now.

timeimp··on Apple Music Classical
>Available worldwide, wherever Apple Music is offered, excluding China, Japan, Korea, Russia, Taiwan, and Turkey.

Err... why?
