tiimbz··on Ask HN: How can I browse HN in dark mode?
For IOS, the Dark Reader extension in Orion.
tiimbz··on Gmail thinks I'm stupid, so I left
Fastmail is an Australian company, but their servers are located in the US [0]

tiimbz··on Gmail thinks I'm stupid, so I left
I had the same issue, but after contacting support, I was able to re-claim the email address from my trial account and use it as an email alias of my main Fastmail account.
tiimbz··on What's your favorite RSS feed reader?
Feedly [0] (web app and on IOS) has been amazing since Google Reader died. On IOS it makes flipping through items and saving them for later a smooth and relatively fast experience.

Have you tried Blackhole? It’s a loopback device for macOS.

tiimbz··on Show HN: BandMatch – “Tinder” but for finding musicians to create bands/collab
Nice! How is this different from Vampr? [0] they use (or at least, used) the same tagline: ‘Tinder, but for musicians to collaborate’

tiimbz··on ASML dethrones Applied Materials, becomes largest fab tool maker
It might be relevant, because labor isn't just about working in a silo. A significant part of work might be done in a team setting, where communication, feedback loops, constant interaction, collaboration, code reviews, team spirit, and more are important.

I'm not suggesting should offer your free time to help cultivate this, but in my experience it does help with building a good work relationship with your colleagues - either outside of work or even at lunch - which then improves the outcome of the labor.

tiimbz··on Smart binoculars can identify 9k birds
I use the IOS app BirdNET for this - also using the same dataset from Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Highly recommended.
tiimbz··on Korea to welcome 'digital nomads' with new visa starting Jan. 1
From the Q&A [0]:

>> Can I work with the digital nomad visa?

>> No. Travelers visiting under the visa cannot be hired or involved in any profit-making activity during their stay.

Isn’t the point of a digital nomad that you are able to work from anywhere?

tiimbz··on Toblerone to change design under ‘Swissness’ rules
Fun fact: One of the most most popular Gouda cheeses sold in The Netherlands is actually made in New Zealand.
tiimbz··on Running Databases on Kubernetes
What type of issues did you run into?

We've been running Zalando Postgres Operator for all our prod and dev clusters (around 100 in total) and couldn't be happier.

tiimbz··on Ask HN: What do you talk about in 1-on-1s with your managers?
The suggestion would be something to do after the pay is already negotiated. You’d want to leave as much room to grow as possible - both money wise as well as your title.
tiimbz··on The Old Reader
There was a thread here a few days ago about Feedly [0], where several self-hosted options were discussed.

tiimbz··on Farewell, Periscope
What I really liked with Periscope was the map view, where you could see on a world map where a live stream was happening. It was a great way to find random interesting streams around the world.

I didn’t see Twitter Live having that same feature. Is it hidden somewhere?

tiimbz··on Ask HN: How do you prevent eyestrain with daily computer use?
Take breaks and focus your eyes on something further away - for example by looking at something outside.

The app Stretchly (free, open source) can display periodic reminders to take breaks from the screen. [0] I can't recommend it enough. It worked well for my RSI too. Alternative apps are Workrave or Workpace.

tiimbz··on Apple has copied some of the most popular apps in the App Store
About the same happened to the F.lux (or Flux) app for iOS, which got removed by Apple[0], only to reappear on IOS as Night Shift, built in to IOS by Apple.

tiimbz··on Was it an invisible attack on U.S. diplomats, or something stranger?
There is also a theory by this audio engineer that the sound is caused by the flag poles opposite the embassy building, which can start shaking with the right amount of wind, which could cause a sound with an infrasonic resonance frequency.

tiimbz··on 800M Email Addresses Leaked Online by Email Verification Service
I've seen that too. This API for example [0] called "email enrichment" where I got my full name back, based on email address.

Edit: Added main company link providing this API [1]
