throwaway5959··on Why YC went to DC
From what I understand a lot could be classified as R&D. More than one would think.
throwaway5959··on Covid Subcommittee Releases Dr. Fauci's Transcript, Highlights Key Takeaways
My quote wasn’t in the testimony, Jimmc414. As I said; there was plenty of editorializing in this joke of a report.
throwaway5959··on Toyota apologizes for cheating on vehicle testing, halts production of 3 models
“Testing improperly”, well that’s one way to frame it.
throwaway5959··on Spotify is increasing US prices again
The time spent setting all that up would be equivalent to years of Spotify subscriptions and would have way less content.
throwaway5959··on Covid Subcommittee Releases Dr. Fauci's Transcript, Highlights Key Takeaways
Have you even read it?

“Dr. Fauci repeatedly played semantics with the definition of “gain-of-function” research in an effort to avoid conceding that the NIH’s funded this dangerous research in China”

There is so much BS editorializing here. Also is there any research that shows that masking actually impaired learning? I didn’t see any listed, just claims that there were studies.

throwaway5959··on Why Asia Stopped Having Kids
In America? Have you been paying any attention to how insane the American right has become? We’re about to have a dude who fucks porn stars as President. Again. Oh and an insurrectionist.
throwaway5959··on Anduril Is Building Out The Pentagon's Dream of Deadly Drone Swarms
It says a lot about how ridiculously fat that industry is. It’s where young mostly white guys go to retire.
throwaway5959··on After Furiosa flops, Hollywood could be facing a biblically disastrous summer
We saw Furiosa in IMAX. It was amazing. It was also $45 for two tickets. Concessions were a bit more than that.

Hollywood: Most families don’t have $100-200 to throw down on a single movie.

throwaway5959··on Ticketmaster breach affects more than half a billion users
If there wasn’t one company responsible for all of concert ticketing in the US maybe there would be fewer victims.
throwaway5959··on Surprising supernova scars cover the Earth
Is there a way to filter out articles that are pay-walled? I know this is unrelated to the article but I’m curious as I’m tired of clicking on links and being unable to read them.
throwaway5959··on Teacher Did All He Could to Keep Kids Off Phones. He's Quitting in Frustration
In the US anyway, there’s a term called “helicopter” parents. Way too involved with their kids, to put it mildly.
throwaway5959··on Teacher Did All He Could to Keep Kids Off Phones. He's Quitting in Frustration
Do these kids just not have parents? Are teachers unable to get parents to require their kids leave their phones at home? When I was in high school we had Nokia phones that did basically nothing but calls and snake.
throwaway5959··on How many EV charging stations does the US need to replace gas stations?
It’s simple, they’re just stubborn. Almost no one in the US has a commute of more than 40 miles a day, and most Americans own their own place. If EVs had a 600 mile range and could charge in fifteen minutes, they’d be saying they need to have a 900 mile range and charge in five minutes.

For EVs to truly win in the US, we’re going to have to wait for boomers to die, or stop driving.

Edit: downvote me boomers. Do it.

throwaway5959··on Apple signs deal with OpenAI for iOS, still wants Google as an 'option'
If the models are running on-device, once the model files are delivered then it really doesn't matter what Google would do.
throwaway5959··on More nuclear energy means less mining
Cool, but you cut off the sentence where it says “and wind”.
throwaway5959··on More nuclear energy means less mining
I don’t live in Finland. In fact, Finland’s population is half that of Michigan’s, so I’m sure they’d be fine with solar and wind as well. They already get a quarter of their power from hydro.
throwaway5959··on More nuclear energy means less mining
When was the last nuclear plant built in California?

Edit: downvoting someone you disagree with is not cool. Go outside, touch some grass.

throwaway5959··on More nuclear energy means less mining
Nuclear energy is just being used as a carrot by fossil fuel companies. They don’t want renewables so they’re dangling an unrealistic option.
throwaway5959··on Why is Sam Altman so obsessed with 'Her'? An investigation
Oh so the Elon trajectory.
throwaway5959··on The new visa fees for foreign artists are out. This is not good
If the numbers are as high as you say the problem will resolve itself in a decade because there won’t be any people left to cross over. So I’m skeptical they’re that high.
throwaway5959··on The new visa fees for foreign artists are out. This is not good
We got extorted out of $300 to cross the border for three days over a just barely over the limit DUI my wife had something like 10 years ago. Funny thing is, neither of us drink now and wouldn’t be driving anyhow, so it would have been impossible for us to drive drunk. Victoria was nice but we won’t be back.
throwaway5959··on Show HN: ServerlessMaps – Host your own maps in the cloud
> Please be aware that this will run for several hours depending on your machine, and will generate a PMTiles file around 45GB. This file will take some time to upload to S3 in the next step as well.

Spin up a tiny EC2 instance with 100 GB volume if you want this to go much faster, assuming your upload is as bad as mine is.

throwaway5959··on Googles AI overview recommends eating a small rock each day
Seems like it’d be trivial for Google to remove the Onion from their round of pretraining.
throwaway5959··on Daily cannabis use overtakes drinking in US first
I’m surprised it’s that high. Yikes.
throwaway5959··on Microplastics detected in human testicles, troubling researchers
How do you avoid using plastics?
throwaway5959··on US Justice Department to seek breakup of Live Nation-Ticketmaster
No need to make snide remarks just because someone is expressing their opinion and consumer choices, that’s the point of message boards.
throwaway5959··on US Justice Department to seek breakup of Live Nation-Ticketmaster
Over the course of the pandemic we didn’t go to a lot of shows (really any) and we had to deal with some job losses. Now that we have the money we’re re-evaluating.
throwaway5959··on California could require age verification to visit porn sites
Note I said like being choked, not choking others.
throwaway5959··on California could require age verification to visit porn sites
Older men and women, including Republicans like being choked too. Try it if you haven’t.
throwaway5959··on US Justice Department to seek breakup of Live Nation-Ticketmaster
I didn’t say you should do it or that it’s ideal, it’s just the reality of the circumstance.
