theoneill··on [dead]
Einstein was a great physicist. But try this test: if you saw this posted, without attribution, as a comment on Reddit about an article on Veterans' Day, would it seem out of place? (Except for the Edwardian idiom, obviously.)
theoneill··on XKCD Explained, One Strip at a Time
I believe the word you want is "yonic."
theoneill··on Greenspan Says U.S. Should Consider Breaking Up Large Banks
"Look, my house of card, you Cretans let it collapse"

It sounds like you're talking about Knossos.

theoneill··on Iceland looks to serve the world.
That particular list, yes.
theoneill··on World's top 100 universities listed
But (a) that would then be a different list, the 100 best bargains, not the 100 best universities, and (b) if you really want to measure what it costs, you have to factor in European taxes, since you have to pay more unless you are an EU resident.
theoneill··on Putting your life on the line for a 50% chance to fail
http://apple.com

(Steve was medium-technical, back in the day, though IIRC he never designed any of Apple's hardware or wrote any of their software.)

theoneill··on Your Race Affects Whether People Write You Back (WRT Online Dating)
That would actually be higher caliber.
theoneill··on Ask HN: If everyone could program, would you feel less self-worth?
It would probably be better. It wouldn't hurt any of our egos, because only a few people would be able to program well, just as, despite near universal literacy, only a few people can write well. But people would at least give us precise bug reports when things broke.
theoneill··on We don't have enough nukes (Data visualization)
When I try that thought experiment, this is what happens:

1. The mother of all PR/lobbying campaigns successfully preserves US support. Especially since it would already be underway before the attack.

2. Nothing changes, except there's now a big radioactive hole somewhere.

theoneill··on Chinese netbooks break $100 mark...
But you can be root.
theoneill··on Facebook Acquires FriendFeed
Not likely. Note the following rather more informed subthread further down the page:

theoneill··on Meter hackers find free parking in San Francisco
Oh dear.
theoneill··on India's school for the poor but gifted
The most surprising sentence:

"Mr Kumar is guarded around the clock by three policemen carrying AK-47 rifles."

theoneill··on Tony Hsieh's Email to Employees RE: Zappos' Sale to Amazon
Somebody tell me it was the VCs

Happy to oblige:

theoneill··on Will universal health care motivate the 'job-locked' to start businesses?
Doesn't seem to in Europe.
theoneill··on If you add an OS to Chrome, it's an OS
It's not The Register that has an obsession with TechCrunch, but this particular writer.
theoneill··on Startup to IPO: Why Few Companies Make the Leap and What We Can Learn from Them
Misleading comparisons + empty truisms, rendered in Jakob Nielsen's sales-letter page style. The combination makes my head spin.
theoneill··on How to use Social Capital to Market Your Web App
By definition?
theoneill··on How to Retire On $500 Per Month
I would be more convinced by someone writing about how they'd done this than how they planned to.
theoneill··on My Language Is More Agile Than Yours: A Study of Arc
I believe it's called flensing.
theoneill··on Google’s Beta Love May Die In Fight For Enterprise Customers
Surely they should decide this by measuring something, like they did with the shades of blue, rather than just based on people's opinions in meetings.
theoneill··on Hand Shaking Is So Medieval. Let’s End It.
"Whenever I do shake a hand I’m completely aware of it, can’t stop thinking about it, until I can wash my hands."

This seems to be more an article about Arrington than about social customs.

theoneill··on You Can't Soak the Rich
Switzerland? Or is there another?
theoneill··on Why the notion here that to be an entrepreneur, you have to be a hacker.
That word executioner, I do not think it means what you think it means.
theoneill··on Parent of gamer asks his son to honor the Geneva Conventions
If he were my son I'd take him for a run.
theoneill··on Remind YC: It's Valentine's Day. Don't forget the flowers and card for your s.o.
There's some corresponding girl who's going to be eating alone too. Why not ask her to go have coffee with you afterward? Unless the college is Caltech, in which case never mind.
theoneill··on Is College Working?
For the same reason that a billion dollars couldn't buy you a number that was prime and factorable.
theoneill··on Female Producers in Saudi Arabia: "Did you have to wear the black thing?"
"Please don't submit comments complaining that a submission is inappropriate for the site. theoneill··on Ask HN: What are the best Arduino starter projects?

Well, at least everyone who's never heard of either Arduino or Google.
