thekiptxt··on Student teacher arrested for private Snapchat message
Yup.

> The pipeline no one told you about

> No student reported her. No parent. No coworker. The flag was entirely automated. Snapchat’s policy permits voluntary emergency disclosures to law enforcement — no warrant required — when the platform determines imminent harm exists. The algorithm makes that initial call. Think of it like your Ring doorbell deciding to call 911 on its own, except the doorbell is reading your text messages.

I had to stop reading after that.

Everything about this is so fatiguing that I can’t choose what irks me the most: - that it’s 2026 and Snapchat doesn’t E2E encrypt - that Snapchat automatically dispatches to LE without a human reviewer or any checks - that the story itself was automated

thekiptxt··on Acetaminophen and Autism
Oh _that’s_ what paracetamol is! I’ve seen it in British shows and presumed it was some different chemical altogether! I’m one of the 700M speakers who only know it by acetaminophen.

OP, please try to enjoy each upvote equally.
thekiptxt··on I Lost $210 to a Stripe Dispute Despite Proof
> The decision on who wins a dispute comes down to a judgment call by the bank in which Stripe unfortunately has no role or way of influencing. We are aware of how this resolution can impact you and your business, but as much as we wish we could do more in this scenario, this is the final outcome.

What about this could Stripe have done better? Eat the cost of any disputes or fraudulent charges that the bank judges not to be fraud?

thekiptxt··on Ask HN: How to build site with payment, subscriptions, user login, registration
Stripe just acquired LemonSqueezy
thekiptxt··on Ask HN: Do you also marvel at the complexity of everyday objects?
One of my recurring daydreams is that someone from a few hundred years ago is accompanying me in whatever mundane task I’m doing. When I’m driving, for example, I try to imagine what questions they’d have about what’s going on and how incredible they’d find it.

I think frequently about how European kings didn’t have the variety in spices that I do in my cabinet, or machines that could lower the temperature of a room.

thekiptxt··on Ask HN: How much to charge for an API call?
Abusive? I know that HN has a very pro FOSS culture, which, with some users, seems to extend to the expectation that companies and products should exist out of the goodness of developers’ hearts. But charging willing users for an API that costs money to maintain is “abusive”?
thekiptxt··on What's something difficult programmers make look easy?
Ah, you had the knowledge to solve the problem using bash, but had not the wisdom to sit on the answer and surf the web until a plausible amount of time had passed :)
thekiptxt··on Modeless Vim
What makes you think that having the focus on the search box vs the code area in VSC constitutes a different mode in the same way as vim normal vs insert modes? You haven’t explained what you consider a mode to be.

I think there is something very clearly different in vim, as first time users must have it explained to them that typing `j` when their cursor is at the start of the code area will do very different things depending on the mode they’re in. It’s a paradigm not present in editors like VSCode. This difference is usefully characterized as “modal”.

thekiptxt··on Amazon reaches 10k Rivian electric delivery vans in US
I have seen "homophonic antonyms" to describe this, but this is a new one! others: accepting/excepting; to raise/raze (a building)

Some are also homographic antonyms! e.g. dust -- remove dust OR add dust

thekiptxt··on Show HN: Kali – Scheduling Assistant for iOS
What’s your target for percentage of ancillary appointments that are accepted? I’m intrigued by the idea, but in the screenshot it shows 2 use cases that don’t make much sense to me: do most people really schedule dry cleaning around a meeting? Would I really carve out time to pick up flowers for an airport pickup?

The suggestions could be nice, but if I find myself rejecting 90%+ then they would be a hassle…

thekiptxt··on I replaced 50 lines of code with a single LLM prompt
Flaky tests are already the bane of my existence, but this is next-level flakiness if this is deployed to production.
thekiptxt··on I replaced 50 lines of code with a single LLM prompt
To those calling this stupid, maybe it's just a POC/prototype? As others stated, LLMs don't seem like the right long term solution here, but as a short-term it doesn't seem so bad. I could easily imagine working on a side project and deciding "chatGPT is a quick and dirty way to do this, if I gain _any_ traction I'll go back and code this properly."

Although, I did just pass the article into chatGPT, asked it to list all the edge cases possible, and to produce some code that covers the edge cases, and at first glance it did ok...

thekiptxt··on Lunar Energy
Clicked on the link expecting it to be a discussion about energy systems on lunar expeditions, or challenges, something like that.

Instead I found it to be a product for "endless energy"? Scrolled to see "your time machine has arrived." Scrolled further to discover the team has "talented people", then that I could design my system today. Clicked "Explore system" and found the explanation for what this product is and the option to reserve: it's a "clean energy break"!

Seriously, why does a company page for a _battery_ take scrolling through pithy Apple-style marketing language and multiple clicks to discover that we're talking about a _battery_?

thekiptxt··on Hurl, a terrible (but cute) idea for a language
In my university, the slang term for an uninitialized variable was "dead squirrel". IIRC, some TA had described uninitialized C++ variables as follows: "It could be any value: zero, 100, or even a dead squirrel." If hurl ever allows uninitialized variables, I would love to see use of an uninitialized variable to `hurl` a `squirrel`! :)
thekiptxt··on Need for cognition
I understand what you’re saying and I can relate to some degree, but it’s hard to read comments like this and not think I’m browsing r/IAmVerySmart.

I have some friends with whom I might try to poke at the nuances of the philosophy of a Supreme Court decision, but I have other friends who would be bored out of their mind. They also have a need for cognition and love to tear topics apart, but _different_ topics.

thekiptxt··on DuckDuckGo Down

thekiptxt··on MSFT Q2/2023 Earnings Release
A huge portion of those laid off were not SDEs, which skews this I think.
thekiptxt··on Ask HN: Are you thinking about quitting?
I’m very glad to read this, as I am feeling in a similar boat, and the strong impetus to move was getting close to suicide. Thankfully, I am making progress and I have committed to the changes, which lifts my spirits.

This comment is encouraging, thank you.

thekiptxt··on Ask HN: Are you thinking about quitting?
In your case, did it end up being worth it in the end?
thekiptxt··on Ask HN: Are you thinking about quitting?
This is exactly how I feel right now. In 2 hours I’m going to announce my 1 month notice to my boss. I have no next job lined up, but I do have about 1.5 years of expenses saved up. I am awful at my job, the writing is on the wall, and for months I haven’t found the motivation to care to do better. It’s demoralizing, especially since I consider myself a capable person.
thekiptxt··on Ask HN: What sub $200 product improved your 2022
Is it quiet enough for the office? I have my own office at work, but sound travels a bit.
thekiptxt··on Ask HN: What sub $200 product improved your 2022
Ask! For me, I got 2 months of personal training for about that much (2 one-hour-sessions per week). I was hesitant because I thought personal training was too expensive given that there were so many resources online, but I’m VERY happy with the purchase.

It forced me into the gym regularly for months, I didn’t have to think about what I’d be working out, and my trainer kept me honest, kickstarting a habit and confidence I’ve tried countless times to develop.

Of course, YMMV and some trainers are terrible, but I would have happily spent much more.

thekiptxt··on Having friends in HR is fine, but HR is not your friend
Thank you!

Honestly this is one of my biggest pet peeves with any “consult a $SPECIALIST” advice. Yes, if my money and time were endless, this is sound advice.

Tangentially, when I express frustration at police incompetence in knowing the law (I live in the US, and many law enforcement officers are under-trained), a common response is “this shouldn’t be an issue as you can follow up in court and get the charges dismissed, or even sue the city”. Again, fair suggestion if I have dozens of hours of time on my hand and thousands in lawyer fees to burn.

thekiptxt··on 1Hz CPU made in Minecraft running Minecraft at 0.1fps [video]
From the video uploader: “yes, we will run DOOM on this” :)
thekiptxt··on “We kill people based on metadata” and other metadata things
I think OP is suggesting that “just metadata” is a sensationalist title, because to a lay person it suggests that decisions predicated on metadata are uninformed compared to decisions predicated on “data,” even though this isn’t necessarily true.

If the title were “We kill people based on data,” then the knee jerk response might be “… obviously.”

thekiptxt··on On Corpspeak
I agree that it’s useful, but I have nonetheless made a concerted effort for my team to use “let’s take this outside” instead of offline. :)

(Similarly migrating from “one on ones” to “1v1s)

thekiptxt··on Oldest and Fatherless: The Terrible Secret of Tom Bombadil (2011)
About a week ago, I (mid 20s) began reading LoTR for the first time, despite having seen the movies long ago. I knew books are always richer in content than movies, but Tom Bombadil was the first radical departure from the movies that I encountered, and the weird encounter was an exciting switch that made me perceive the story I’m reading as new and different from the story I’ve seen.

The group has not yet arrived to Rivendell (so no spoilers please :))

thekiptxt··on Most Americans think NASA’s $10B space telescope is a good investment
Current estimate is closer to 20 years until fuel to keep it in the Lagrange point is exhausted. Originally planned for 10, but the deployment was precise enough to leave enough fuel for many more years :)
thekiptxt··on Mastering the Game of Stratego with Model-Free Multiagent Reinforcement Learning
To the extent that machines can’t replicate. If I place my hand on a piece that’s illegal to move, feign that I’m reconsidering, and then move a different piece, then my opponent may suspect that the originally touched piece may be moved.

How can I use these 200 IQ moves against a bot?
