thehappypm··on Let's be honest, Generative AI isn't going all that well
A more accurate description of code is that it’s a depreciating asset, perhaps, or an asset that requires maintenance cost. Neither of which is a liability
thehappypm··on Golfing Is Not Rowing
“A golf game is 65-75 swings over ~5 hours.”

It’s also setting a precedent that IP usage requires a contract. Never mind that the contract is bonkers!
thehappypm··on IBM CEO says there is 'no way' spending on AI data centers will pay off
Energy is very cheap for data centers. have you ever looked up wholesale energy rates? It’s like a cent per kilowatt hour.
thehappypm··on A Tale of Two AI Failures: Debugging a Simple Bug with LLMs
tl;dr: custom, naïve Concatenation formatting implementation can cause bugs

There’s nothing basic about billing.
thehappypm··on Being poor vs. being broke
The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money. Take boots, for example. ... A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. ... But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while a poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet. This was the Captain Samuel Vimes 'Boots' theory of socio-economic unfairness.

thehappypm··on Argentine peso weakens to fresh low despite US interventions
If America saves Argentina, and Argentina becomes a powerful country again, that is a powerful ally we could have for a century.
thehappypm··on United MAX Hit by Falling Object at 36,000 Feet
Is it possible that this was a bullet?

A 50 cal bullet is estimated to reach 15,000 feet if fired straight up.

But this is Colorado: in the most extreme scenario, standing atop Mount Elbert, you’re already at ~15,000 feet.

Combine these two — and account for the dramatically reduced air resistance along the bullet’s path starting from high altitidue — you could conceivably get a bullet that high

Some dope standing at high elevation blasting bullets into the sky in Colorado seems as plausible as a meteor

thehappypm··on New England's last coal plant has stopped operating, according to its owners
There actually is some coal in New England, and if there was (for some reason) a desire for New England to be energy independent, coal might be part of the mix as a result. This article discusses some less-successful attempts to get into that coal.. and it’s delightful to see the date of its publication.

thehappypm··on Postpandemic US Immigration Surge: New Facts and Inflationary Implications [pdf] (2024)
While there is validity to this logic, the slightly lower labor cost does not offset the need to house more people, particularly when the cost of land and materials is so astronomical
thehappypm··on Postpandemic US Immigration Surge: New Facts and Inflationary Implications [pdf] (2024)
The hypothesis is true for housing at least. Immigrants need to live somewhere, and that puts upward pressure on rents (which are part of CPI).
thehappypm··on Connecticut Trail Census Dashboard (2025)
Jockey Hollow in New Jersey is a nice place as well, part of Morristown NHP. It’s ostensibly a historical park but 99% of the use is just a wonderful place to hike the small mountains and walk in the woods. Given the insane amount of NHPs in the Northeast, I’m curious if there are others.
thehappypm··on Autism should not be seen as single condition with one cause, say scientists
Harvard sees a potential link, hell it’s the name of the paper: “Using acetaminophen during pregnancy may increase children’s autism and ADHD risk ”.

I think that it might be a real thing is because nobody really knows how acetaminophen even works. All the theories involve influencing the brain‘s chemistry. Who knows, maybe influencing a fetus’s brain chemistry can be bad.
