the-kenny··on Project Shadowglass
Why would I want to play a game where the poor get poorer and the rich get richer, trying to get a bit less poor myself? I already do that in the real world.
the-kenny··on LLM attacks take just 42 seconds on average, 20% of jailbreaks succeed
With that, attackers need two gadgets instead of one. Where’s the end?
the-kenny··on Going in circles without a real-time clock
Note that the Pi 5 has a real time clock - you just need to add a small battery and it will keep the time when powered off: https://picockpit.com/raspberry-pi/raspberry-pi-5-has-a-real...
the-kenny··on Realtime telemetry from ISS internal components
Guessing here: If you have a breaker switch after an additional switch, labelling the breaker with 'on/off' may be misleading as 'on' doesn't necessarily mean the connected device is powered. It may be off because the other switch is off.
the-kenny··on Building an occupancy sensor with a $5 ESP32 and a serverless DB
I have an unorthodox suggestion: get a bicycle rear radar like the Garmin Varia. They communicate via Bluetooth LE incoming cars, their count, and an average speed (in a set of ranges like 0-15km/h, 15-30km/h, …).

Mount this with a usb cable somewhere, add an ESP32 or anything with Bluetooth somewhere else to accumulate.

the-kenny··on Trying Rust for web services
I think being so heavily pushed by Apple is actually a downside for ObjC here. I really enjoyed programming ObjC when I was programming for iOS and Mac. That was mostly because of the very rich API shipped with Apple products.

Can you point me to a list of libraries written in ObjC that work without Apple specific code? (E.g. without using anything starting with 'NS')

the-kenny··on Ask HN: Who's using Clojure in production?
We (http://bevuta.com/) use ClojureScript for a front-end project relying heavily on Om (https://github.com/swannodette/om)
the-kenny··on JZed.js – The functional JQuery alternative
What makes this library functional?
the-kenny··on Koyaanisqatsi: Life Out of Balance
Please not that Hulu has stupid georestrictions. Please think of the people outside US.
the-kenny··on Mystery signal from a helicopter
Quite funny - I know someone who uses a similar setup to send GPS Coordinates for a Quadcopter and a Plane via the audio channel of the video link (he flies the Quadcopter/Plane with video goggles) to the ground station. There, an Arduino controls some stepper motors to point directional antennas at the copter/plane.

Project is at https://github.com/KipK/Ghettostation - video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tiO4YCX7hJo - you can hear the modulation in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nm0okv8mTsg

the-kenny··on T-Mobile CEO: “This industry blows,” biggest carriers offer “horseshit”
The funny thing is that the biggest operator in Germany, T-Mobile, offers the biggest horseshit there.
the-kenny··on Suggest a new name for my Smartwatch startup
Seriously? 5 months to create a product (assuming you don't have anything right now, based on the not-existing pictures & the scenes from Iron Man as the product video)?

That won't work.

Also, what about 'iWatch'? It obviously features the iOS keyboard and homescreen.

the-kenny··on Tidbit: Client-Side Bitcoin Mining
You can be sure that no one with a computer running on a battery will ever visit your website again...
the-kenny··on Squishy Earth
I tried for more than a minute to split earth in two. My physics-brain just expects it.
the-kenny··on Adafruit's Trinket
While I like the Arduino movement very much, I don't see what's so special about this.

It's a breakout board for an ATTiny, with some vreg and an usb port on board. So what?

the-kenny··on This is for bicycles what Tesla is for cars
Discussed before. This is essentially a bad scooter and a bad bicycle combined. You can't use bike lanes in most countries and the motorcycle performance is bad too.
the-kenny··on The Ocean around Fukushima is steaming from radiation
I don't know about the current state of the cooling mechanism, and I don't want to doubt there has been major spills of nuclear water in the past, but why are they so sure that this mist over the sea is caused directly by heat release from nuclear material in the water?

I'd suppose it's warmer-than-normal water that has been through some sort of multi-stage cooling circuit, just like in any other nuclear plant.

the-kenny··on Ask HN: How Can I leave Syria now and get asylum in Europe (Germany)
I approve this too. Don't go to Germany.

As a German citizen I really hate to say this, but recently there has been a hitch in the media where there were protests by neonazi groups in front of asylum homes. Sadly, there are still people who see asylum seekers as potential job-stealers, showing them nothing but hate and would like to throw them all out, regardless of their skills.

This is absolutely not the general opinion in Germany, but at least some people think so.

the-kenny··on Heroku = down
Seriously? Why are there multiple posts like "xyz is down" on Hacker News every other day? Isn't there "downnews.net" or whatever?
the-kenny··on Sky Drone FPV: NSA-proof Video Transfer System for Consumer Drones
150ms is too long for FPV. Others have tried it. It might be flyable, but it won't be good.
the-kenny··on The DEA Seized Bitcoins In A Silk Road Drug Raid
Protip: Always store your Bitcoin private keys on multiple locations. I don't think the DEA has moved the bitcoins itself, they most like just took the harddrive with the wallet on it.
the-kenny··on OFF Pocket: A privacy case for mobile phones
Put your phone inside while it isn't powered off will make it increase the transmission power up to 11, draining the batteries in minutes. That's how it turns off everything - it drains the battery.

God, just turn it off (and remove the battery if you're over-careful)

the-kenny··on First steps with Hy, the Pythonic Lisp
defn nested in defn seems totally wrong from a LISP (or Clojure) viewpoint. Isn't there a let or letfn? (Please note that I have no idea of Python)

To be fair, you could never really understand the lyrics of Smells like Teen Spirit anyways.
