tetsusaiga··on Ask HN: Why do search engines not let you blacklist spam domains?
Another fun one— next time a public figure dies, especially a slightly more obscure one, just google them/their death.

Whole first page is just poorly written fiverr style articles, all by people for whom English is clearly a second language, at best.

Eventually, legit stuff gets on the first page too, but theres a few instances where weeks later the first result is still one of these garbage seo-torture sites.

Has really made me lose my faith in google lately.

tetsusaiga··on Why income share agreements did not work out
Since apparently it's not connected to credit score, what stops you from just not paying it?

If small claims court is genuinely their only recourse, that sounds like something I might try my odds in, especially if I have a compelling case that I've been screwed.

tetsusaiga··on Humans did not evolve to ride bicycles (2017)
Okay thanks for confirming, that's about what I was remembering, but it was such a big different I was unsure. The car really puts it in perspective
tetsusaiga··on Humans did not evolve to ride bicycles (2017)
I get what they're getting at here, but isn't cycling still wildly more efficient than walking/running? Maybe they haven't changed because they are already reasonably optimal.
tetsusaiga··on The pop and rock greats who love model railways
I'm into scale military models, not railroads, but it's the same thing at heart.

The "rockstar modeler" phenomenon they're talking about here is amusing and very real, because if you're not into it you might not realize modeling is such a closeted hobby. Almost every modeler I know (all of whom, through the internet), makes every effort to avoid telling anyone about the hobby, and we all do it instinctively. It's funny because it's not like model-makers are some classically oppressed group, but we certainly act like we are. Maybe its childhood trauma lurking deep in our subconscious. Maybe it's just cognitive dissonance between who we really are, and the face we present to the world. I don't know.

But anyway, that's the sort of deeper significance to this article, and why it's so funny (or cool, for some of us) to have rockstars of all people who are into modeling.

tetsusaiga··on Body Ritual Among the Nacirema (1956) [pdf]
They should have started out more vaguely— I started reading it from the second page, and without Notgnihsaw I didn't have a clue.

> A few women afflicted with almost inhuman hypermammary development are so idolized that they make a handsome living simply going from village to village and permitting the natives to stare at them for a fee.

Me: "Haha! These people are so dumb!"

tetsusaiga··on Java 18 / JDK 18: General Availability
This is my default answer. What else would you use? C# is the only realistic alternative in my opinion, and I could respect that choice.

I work in Go currently and although I see the positives, I'd be less inclined to unleash a bunch of mid-level devs using Go to create a huge codebase.

If I could have my way, personally, I'd go for one of the other fun JVM langs out there... but that's just me having fun.

tetsusaiga··on Be good to your mentors
Glad to hear you found that helpful and wanted to try it out! I'll have to go ahead and sign up so I can take a closer look.
tetsusaiga··on Be good to your mentors
This is pretty neat actually.

A little constructive input: Seeing more of the people who you can potentially book calls with might make people more willing to sign up. I'm interested, but with only 3 examples it leaves me in the "Ehh I'll save this and think about later" zone. Good work though.

tetsusaiga··on Deliberately optimizing for harm
You can't just tease us like this! If not the actual chemical... maybe an analogue or something? Chemistry is one of my great fascinations lol.
tetsusaiga··on Umeshisms
I legitimately would have thought this was satire if I hadn't perused the comments first.

The core message I took away was like an old Hunter S. Thompson quote:

If you've never crossed the line, you don't really know where the line is.

I can think of very few things in my life that need to be optimized to the point of being within microns of the line (peak performance?). I've been down that road before and it never made me any happier or richer, but then again, maybe that's why I'm not a Formula 1 driver.

tetsusaiga··on DigitalOcean acquires CSS-tricks
The real answer is that its copywriting, which means grammar is nearly irrelevant.

He starts with "Hey I'm Chris Sev" because it's a better headline, which is defined as something that is more likely to make people read the rest of the page. (Defined specifically because I see lots of complaints here that headlines should be descriptive of the actual content, which isn't really what matters, functionally. (I get the impulse though, really.))

tetsusaiga··on City Does Not Exist
Ahh, woosh on me, sorry! haha
tetsusaiga··on How on earth I became an entrepreneur
I don't know either, but I can confirm that's within the scale for a domain I sold in the last year. Got 6.5k and it wasn't even a .com
tetsusaiga··on Ask HN: Is there a pure SMS based UI?
Did this comment just remind you to update the readme? All 7 years old, and then 35 minutes ago, I love it lol. Very cool though
tetsusaiga··on Why is it hard to buy things that work well?
Really trying to keep this in mind lately. The code is the easy part.
tetsusaiga··on Why is it hard to buy things that work well?
I absolutely understand where you're coming from here, but in practice and reality, the point of the title really is to make sure people click the article.
tetsusaiga··on Two recent studies on judging authentic vs. deepfake images
Yes it feels a bit reductionist... "Love is merely a series of chemical reactions, therefore I should be able to compute text that elicits these reactions in a person and makes them fall in love with me."
tetsusaiga··on City Does Not Exist
It's a reference to a famous surrealist painting:

My artist girlfriend shared this with me once, and I'm happy to be able to pay it forward. haha

tetsusaiga··on Ask HN: Ads with small budget for personal project?
Professional copywriter + media buyer here. (also a software engineer)

The Tldr; here is that your budget is too low to do anything meaningful on FB.

In the simplest terms, FB traffic is mostly garbage unless you're optimizing for purchases, and those clicks are easily gonna be in the $.5-$1 range these days. It's gotten expensive. If you're getting that many clicks for ~$15, I can tell you're running a Traffic objective and that's just gonna be garbage regardless. l

That said, you're on the right track with the retargeting, but even then, you're not running enough in the first place for retargeting to work. It takes a relatively larger data set.

I wouldn't bother running FB traffic if I can't spend at least $50/day, maybe $100/day.

I realize that most people cannot just throw that kind of money into the pit though.

So, to make this work you need a well planned and executed funnel, product, etc. which is beyond the scope of this discussion, but that's kind of the reality:

Running ads on any platform for $15/day in 2022, is basically worthless. It's sort of a lame reality, but it is what it is really. If you're interested in diving deep into this, I would be happy to help and could point you towards some good resources for learning though.

Also, one last thing:

FB analytics is basically un-trustable garbage and it's know that the data is going to be worthless. All serious media-buyers (people who run ads) use third party tracking software.

tetsusaiga··on Disaster planning for regular folks (2015)
My knowledge of the Yakuza is limited to a single ~1-hour interview with a former member...

But that said, hearing it from the source has made me inclined to believe the more charitable interpretation.

I found the interview for anyone who is especially interested:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVmt80EXNGI

Obviously this is not some sort of definitive source, but he goes into "What is the real Yakuza vs. that which we see in pop culture" very quickly, which is sort of the heart of this idea.

Note: The guys runs an anime channel, but it's a very serious interview all the same.

tetsusaiga··on Russian forces invade Ukraine after Putin orders attack

tetsusaiga··on Embracing Imposter Syndrome
There's nothing like deciphering someone's tone through slack right after you did something stupid!

Ahh good, I just opened a PR with print statements... they definitely don't think I'm an idiot now...

tetsusaiga··on That wild Ask a Manager story
Ahh, escheat, a word I just learned on here yesterday. haha
tetsusaiga··on That wild Ask a Manager story
This actually happened at my first software job.

We were expanding fast by hiring bunches of contractors, which was already giving pretty polar results. After a while, my team got one too.

They didn't have a computer ready for him yet, so my lead pairs me up with him to babysit basically. We go chill in a conference room and I basically just try to get to know him and explain what we do here. I can tell he's nervous, and since this was my first dev job I remembered that feeling all too well, and wanted to be nice to him.

Immediately, he barely speaks english. Weird, but okay. Then I try to just talk shop with him, and find that I can't get any answers about recent stuff he's built, what he's interested in, frameworks he's used, or even what his favorite language is. They guy clearly knew nothing about software. I laughed to myself in a "not my problem" kind of way.

After a while I finally hand him off and explain the situation to my lead.

Turns out, he had a totally different person do the interview and coding test. And he didn't know anything about software. When confronted with this reality, he simply repeated, "I can do the work, I'll get the work done, I promise." Presumably the plan was to either just try and collect the first paycheck or two, or maybe he even wanted to outsource the work to someone else.

So, maybe don't rework your whole hiring process around this possibility, but at least do a video chat.

(This was well before covid.)

tetsusaiga··on Pedestrian deaths spike in U.S. as reckless driving surges
It's funny, if you look in my comment history, I just made the same observation the other day.

Anecdata, and all that, but it's interesting that so many people are noticing this.

tetsusaiga··on Is this the end of the Cannonball Run?
This is a key part of it that I left out actually, the egregious nature of it. Interesting to hear you say this too.
tetsusaiga··on Words known better by males than females, and vice versa
Ahh, that's a very good observation. I'm surprised that wasn't my first thought as well.
tetsusaiga··on Is this the end of the Cannonball Run?
That's true as well. Every competitor is making due with the set of circumstances they were given, so why should COVID be a unique circumstance? It's just another tactical decision, to do the run at that time.

Either way, I'm interested to see where it goes from here.
