tellarin··on Beijing smog ‘red alert’ issued
Yes, but in a somewhat smaller scale. Air quality here is just one of the facets of the pollution issue.
tellarin··on Beijing smog ‘red alert’ issued
I live in Beijing and the pollution here is pretty bad at many points during the year (the current streak is not even close to the worse I've seen here).

But I'm always amazed by how much emphasis is placed on China in this regard. I try to follow AQI indexes for comparison and India has multiple cities trending over China most of the time. However, news pieces about it are kind of rare...

I see what you did there. "... marketing ARM..." Clever. ;-)
tellarin··on China Cuts Mobile Service of Xinjiang Residents Evading Internet Filters
Overall it's not really that sinister, I guess.

Outside those it's mostly local gov/police not wanting foreigners walking around, not being allowed of the bus between the larger cities, them being sensitive when getting somewhat close to the border with Kazakhstan, and Bingtuan. Having "paperwork" is required then.

Plus, restrictions come and go on forcing foreigners to only travel with authorised tour agencies, or authorised guides, that won't take you to some places. And whose presence will make local people suspicious of talking to you.

> Anybody with a Chinese visa can go there and poke around without special permissions

This is not true. There are plenty of restrictions for foreigners travelling in Xinjiang, especially outside of the touristy areas in the main cities. Large areas are unreachable without special permits, allegedly due to "safety reasons".

In some sense, France already does this type of thing in Africa. Most recently in Mali.

Not sure in which way Syria would be significantly different.

Also, Russia is being pulled even more into Syria. So a truly international force may materialise at some point. Not that I'm advocating that's a good thing.

tellarin··on A hangover led to the discovery of ibuprofen
Price? The margin in generics is already pretty thin.
tellarin··on Why we need to create careers for research software engineers
I made the switch from Researcher to RSDE and I'm not sure what you're talking about.

There are plenty of Principal RSDEs and some become Managers of technical leaders of teams, which sometimes even include researchers.

But of course, the track is not as clear and common as for plain Researcher or SDE (in a product team).

PS: As far as I know, the patent bonus are there for all (though I can't comment on values).

tellarin··on Facebook's traffic to top publishers fell 32 percent since January
I wonder if the stupid idea of opening websites within the crapppy mobile app also put out users.

Works fine for me in South Korea.
tellarin··on Facebook Blocks Internet Pioneer “R.U. Sirius”
The family doesn't need access to the account. It can still be "memorialized".

Facebook could very well deal with a list of images to remove and the reason for it. In this case, the reason is cristal clear.

Works fine for me since the story was posted. In Beijing here.

tellarin··on I spent the last 15 years trying to become an American and failed
You seem to forget that, for example, many of those immigrants supported slavery and brought in many immigrants from Africa.

Or that Texas was once part of Mexico and a bunch of illegal immigrants from the U.S. there declared its independence (and later joined the U.S.).

Or the loads of Chinese that worked on the west expansion (and multiple waves later) whose "assimilation" was nothing close to easy.

tellarin··on How the Languages in Game of Thrones, Defiance, and Thor Were Created
That's why I like to use "espertofone" for "smartphone" in Portuguese. It's a quite literal translation, but has precisely the same meaning.

And always cause people to smile when they hear it. :)

I don't know what you do. I get stares all the time here.

I'm probably in 100s of pictures too. Last dozen in a square in Dalian, though. :)

tellarin··on CNNIC's response to Google
It's not really banned or inaccessible. But connections are severely throttled down.
tellarin··on The PhD Factory (2011)
While I agree with you in general, at least in CS and EE it seems to be a good time for PhDs. At least for those considering industry.

The amount of opportunities seems to be only growing and companies are fighting for them in some areas.

tellarin··on Microsoft's new foldable keyboard
In general I do agree with you. But I have to point out that even Apple has been facing this type of issue recently.

E.g. The Wi-Fi issue in iOS 8. Already on 8.2 and not fixed for many people.

Is this inescapable?

tellarin··on The Passport King
Well, at least China only counts it if it's a full 24 hours in the country.
tellarin··on Finland, Home of the $103,000 Speeding Ticket
How I wish this was the norm. It's clear that fines have different deterrent effect depending on how much people earn, so why not have them be proportional?
tellarin··on China drops leading technology brands for state purchases
European tech companies are still doing well in the game. For example, Nokia is the 2nd or 3rd biggest manufacturer of telecom equipment (depending on how you slice/group the market).

I know the title is a bit flamy, but I think it can generate an interesting discussion on how to best handle the publication and handling of this type of issues (especially when involving competing companies).

Thoughts?
