teh_infallible··on The U.S. may be missing human cases of bird flu, scientists say
I don’t think there’s any common ground with people who want to normalize masking in public.
teh_infallible··on Disinformation is on the rise. How does it work?
Surely everything in the NYT is true? What incentive would they have to promote an agenda? /s
teh_infallible··on FCC fines largest wireless carriers for sharing location data
This is a bribe masquerading as a fine.
teh_infallible··on Airline keeps mistaking 101-year-old woman for 1-year-old baby
I heard a story like that where someone had a vanity license plate “NONE” and kept getting cited for not having a plate.

teh_infallible··on Bitcoin Block 840000
Maybe we can just get rid of Greece and keep bitcoin?
teh_infallible··on Psychiatric risks for worsened mental health after psychedelic use
I always thought the “war on drugs” was a big pharma turf war.

Nearly every school shooter was on an antidepressant, but somehow that never makes headlines.

teh_infallible··on Google threatens to cut off news after California proposes paying media outlets
I love this quote from the article:

“The testing process involves removing links to California news websites, potentially covered by CJPA, to measure the impact of the legislation on our product experience.”

If that’s not a veiled threat, I don’t know what is. I read that as, “The testing will demonstrate how screwed your media outlets will be when we delink them.”

teh_infallible··on Ethereum has blobs. Where do we go from here?
There was a sketchy looking file sharing website where someone had posted some incredibly hard to find audio tracks that I really wanted, but the website required a subscription. Paying with a cc meant automatically-recurring payments, but I paid with bitcoin, got my files, and knew the website couldn’t get any money from me after that.
teh_infallible··on Hackintosh is almost dead
Your comment makes me think of my 3d printing journey. A lot of printers require maintenance and tinkering just to keep them functional. To an extent, since they are targeted towards “makers” who like to play with these things, that’s fine.

But sometimes the thing you’re trying to build is of central importance, and you want the machine to stay out of your way.Tinkering with the machine takes away time you could be exploring your ideas with a machine that’s already fully functional.

teh_infallible··on The internet isn't dying, it's changing
I wish community meshnets were more popular

teh_infallible··on It's OK to abandon your side-project
That’s hilarious :) The first time I worked on a project that used git, I got called out by a coworker for naming my branches after characters from Avatar, the Last Airbender.
teh_infallible··on It's OK to abandon your side-project
There’s a big difference between quitting a side project and giving up on a startup. With the startup, you have other people depending on you.

IMO, this is the real power you can leverage with a side project, the power to change your mind and bounce between completely different ideas. Those famous side projects that become companies? I’d bet that a lot of them were not the first or even third iteration.

teh_infallible··on The Cruelty of Crypto
Except most of the article is not about crypto, but speculation in general. And the location is relevant because y combinator is about launching startups like Coinbase and Kraken, which have been extremely successful.
teh_infallible··on The Cruelty of Crypto
Can someone explain to me why, despite Coinbase and Kraken being headquartered in the Bay Area, HN hates cryptocurrency so much? It is literally just a neutral technology.
teh_infallible··on How Condé Nast bought and destroyed Pitchfork
Ars used to have interesting articles about novel intersections between technology and the law. Now it’s like a Sharper Image catalogue.
teh_infallible··on New cancer drug kinder than chemotherapy
An inventor named Royal Rife experimented with destroying tumors by finding the resonant frequencies of the cancer cells.

teh_infallible··on SpaceX Illegally Fired Workers Critical of Musk, Federal Agency Says
Isn’t everyone on HN a capitalist? Startups, venture funding, etc?
teh_infallible··on Blockbuster Alzheimer's paper retracted by former Stanford president
If retractions are exceedingly rare, it could imply that, once published, fraudulent papers have a tendency to persist.
teh_infallible··on I Just Need a Programmer
I had a job working on an ecommerce site for a company that sold wine direct to consumers. On my first day, a coworker asked me, “What will you do when the website is finished?”

It was interesting to reflect on the misconceptions inherent in her question. The website is never finished. She didn’t understand that maintenance and upgrades are ongoing, and this is the nature of software.

That said, I do wonder if AI will make OP’s friend’s request seem reasonable. “Hey, ChatGPT, I just need an ecommerce site for a winery that sells to consumers. Can you walk me through how to build that?”

teh_infallible··on Simulating fluids, fire, and smoke in real-time
Maybe in the future, personal computers will have more than one GPU, one for graphics and one for AI?
teh_infallible··on 'Long flu' has emerged as a consequence similar to long Covid
Until we are allowed to look at adverse reactions critically and without being censored, this problem will only get worse.
teh_infallible··on “Yes” means “no”: The language of VCs
One reason to seek funding early would be if you are in a competitive space and want to grow faster than your competitors.
teh_infallible··on Why it's taking so long for Americans to get payments instantly
Isn’t this the exact problem that cryptocurrencies solve? With stablecoins, you can send any amount of money anywhere in the world for almost no cost.
teh_infallible··on Tinnitus linked to undetected auditory nerve damage
I’m not saying it’s the only cause, but it may well aggravate it.

teh_infallible··on Tinnitus linked to undetected auditory nerve damage
I’m surprised no one has suggested noise canceling headphones as a possible cause. There was an HN post about this awhile back
teh_infallible··on Why I will never buy another Samsung device
But make sure you have your 2fa backup codes! I replaced two phones in a short period of time, and overlooked the 2fa backups the second time. It’s easy to do if you’re not expecting a replacement.
