teh_infallible··on Tell HN: Bob Cringely has died
Thank you for doing that. I’m going to go watch it now!
teh_infallible··on Whistleblower warns Postal Service mail ballot system has catastrophic problems
You need an ID to drive, buy alcohol, buy cigarettes, board a plane. And people manage to do all those things.
teh_infallible··on Playa Phone
I had an idea like this years ago, only my idea was to put two of these on the playa and have them only call each other. Do you could pick one up, the other would ring, and you could talk to a random person.
teh_infallible··on The Internet Is Kind of a Predatory Cesspit Now
This post is one long strawman argument.
teh_infallible··on What causes lightning? The answer keeps getting more interesting
I always wanted to replicate this with a helium balloon and a long, wet string coated with copper filings.
teh_infallible··on The Car That Watches You Back: The Advertising Infrastructure of Modern Cars
I’m hoping the new Slate electric cars don’t have this.
teh_infallible··on Setting up OpenClaw on a cloud VM
It basically writes a bunch of notes as markdown files and then injects them as part of its prompts. I saw someone compare it to that movie Momento, where the protagonist can’t form new memories so he tattoos notes all over his body.
teh_infallible··on US Military leaders meet with Anthropic to argue against Claude safeguards
It seems odd to me that the military doesn’t already have far superior models.
teh_infallible··on Discord will require a face scan or ID for full access next month
Can you get Zulip supported by OpenClaw? Zulip was my first choice communication channel.
teh_infallible··on Claude can now search the web
Apparently they use smart appliances to scrape websites from residential accounts.
teh_infallible··on The "Take It Down" Act
Anarchy is not a rejection of hierarchies, it’s a rejection of a central authority.
teh_infallible··on French police free kidnapped Ledger executive
Or you could see it as an argument for the second amendment. Would someone have attempted this against an executive based in Texas? I don’t think so.
teh_infallible··on Breaking NATO Radio Encryption [video]
Maybe they wanted to decrypt NATO radio messages?
teh_infallible··on US lawmakers tell Apple, Google to be ready to remove TikTok from stores Jan. 19
This was the original vision for iPhone, if I’m not mistaken
teh_infallible··on Dumb TVs deserve a comeback
I use a short throw projector with an Apple TV. There’s also a little device called Micca which you can use to play video files you’ve downloaded.
teh_infallible··on Dumb TVs deserve a comeback
Get a short throw projector. You can plug anything into it. It’s the perfect “dumb” screen.
teh_infallible··on The correct amount of ads is zero
The customer is always right.
teh_infallible··on FLUX is fast and it's open source
I am hoping that AI art tends towards a modular approach, where generating a character, setting, style, and camera movement each happens in its own step. It doesn’t make sense to describe everything at once and hope you like what you get.
teh_infallible··on Scientists propose glacier geoengineering to avoid sea level rise
A melting glacier does not cause the sea level to rise. I can’t believe people don’t understand this. If you have a cup of ice water and melt the ice, the water level stays constant.
teh_infallible··on The Rubik's Cube Turns 50
And I still can’t solve it
teh_infallible··on Watching "Grizzly Man" with a bear biologist
Rewatching this film, it really seemed fake to me. I love it, but I think it’s a mockumentary
teh_infallible··on I'm terrified of old people
Life just has seasons
teh_infallible··on Gilead shot prevents all HIV cases in trial
I suppose that’s another way of saying we’re seeing controversial advances in science.
teh_infallible··on Apple Intelligence for iPhone, iPad, and Mac
Apple auto suggest can be ducking annoying
teh_infallible··on U.S. clears way for antitrust inquiries of Nvidia, Microsoft and OpenAI
Sounds to me like some regulators saw dollar signs and wanted a cut.
teh_infallible··on Mitsubishi robot solves Rubik's Cube in 0.305s
This is incredibly impressive, but I wonder- how does a project like this get proposed and funded? Why would Mitsubishi devote resources to solving a Rubik’s Cube as quickly as possible?
teh_infallible··on Microsoft AI spying scandal: time to rethink privacy standards
I suspect that people care about privacy more than we think, but the technology feels overwhelming to them, so they bury their heads in the sand.

I don’t even browse in “private mode.” Not because I don’t care, but because I assume it won’t really change anything.

teh_infallible··on CO2 helps viruses stay alive longer in the air
Richard Feynman talked about this in his talk about “What is Fire?”

teh_infallible··on Crypto brothers front-ran the front-runners
Arbitrage definitely happens in crypto. It’s how prices stay consistent across exchanges. If you have a small decentralized exchange with relatively low liquidity, arbitrage bots come in to capitalize on price discrepancies across exchanges.
teh_infallible··on Breathwork supports emergence of altered states of consciousness
It also leaves you in a very suggestive state. I did several sessions with a “rebirther” years ago, basically holotropic breath work. I decided I didn’t really need it, and I went in my last few sessions determined to quit, but at the end of the session, the practitioner always managed to convince me I needed another session. I eventually broke it off with him over the phone.
