taubek··on Boris Sakač, pioneer of Olympic Games IT systems, has died
I’ve found this news only on Croatian news outlets. No English articles yet. Here is short summary by Claude:

Boris Sakač, the Croatian engineer who spent nearly three decades keeping the Olympic Games' IT systems running, has died in his native Zagreb at 82.

Sakač began his career at IBM, rising from systems engineer to head of IBM Croatia. His international sports career started at the 1979 Mediterranean Games in Split, where he was brought in by Stane Dolanc to run the Games' computerization despite having little sports background — he ended up training local high schoolers to help journalists use the new terminals, and the results system ended up setting speed records for publishing results.

That success led to work at the 1980 Moscow Olympics, where he helped salvage the IT system after IBM's withdrawal amid the Western boycott, and then to running IT for both the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Games and the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Games. From there his systems were used at every Olympics from Sarajevo 1984 through Sochi 2014 — including Calgary, Seoul, Albertville, Barcelona, Lillehammer, Atlanta, Nagano, Sydney, Salt Lake City, Athens, Turin, Beijing, Vancouver and London.

From the early 1990s he served as an IT advisor to the IOC and led the ORIS project (Olympic Results and Information Services), which connected competition results to information services so results reached TV viewers within fractions of a second. He was reportedly trusted deeply by longtime IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch. A privately funded award in his name, the €5,000 Sakač Prize, has been given to top-performing computer science students.

taubek··on Why Bending Spoons eliminated all job titles
Text from tweet:

Why Bending Spoons eliminated all job titles:

“At some point, we were looking for ways to streamline and simplify, and someone said, ‘Why do we even have titles? What's the benefit of titles?’”

“Let's not be arrogant. There's probably some benefit. What's that benefit? We ultimately determined that the benefit was that people needed titles for bragging rights.”

“So we just got rid of titles and told people, ‘You can pick your title for your CV, LinkedIn, whatever. We don't need to know. We don't want to know. We don't need to approve it. We don't want to see it. Just don't embarrass us."

“If you're a new hire, don't say you're the CTO because then people will question our integrity as a company. But as long as it's broadly reasonable, we're good. We have never reintroduced them again. We don't have any titles.”

“We never looked back. We probably saved easily hundreds if not thousands of person-hours in terms of defining different terms and having emotionally draining discussions with people. Never had a problem, not a single instance of someone complaining that we didn't formally assign to them a title ever out of, at this point, many hundreds, actually multiple thousands of people.”

taubek··on Ask HN: What was the initial reaction to search engines?
Somewhat. I remember that I was using Archie for finding files that were distributed via FTP. We had directories like Yahoo or DMOZ. At that time directories were the starting points for me. Internet seemed large, but not infinite.

For searching there was Altavista, Lycos, Hotbot, … Ask Jeeves was something that tried to be more that search engine. You had a feeling that now you can find all of the info and files on Internet. Google wasn’t the first one out there but it seems to me that it is the only one that survived.

To me it makes things easier to read, easier to spot mistakes. But I'm not full time developer. I'm just reading code.

taubek··on Ask HN: Is pivoting and focus shifting betrayal of existing users?
But if you are user because of Path A, and startup midway decided to go on Path B what is your future? What if pivot isn't working for you as user?

I get it that if you are paying user you have some support or what ever.

The reason that I'm asking is this: how to justify the trust in some new technology devolved by startup? How can I convince decision makers that this is the way to go when 1 in 10 startups fail.

taubek··on Ask HN: Is there a hosting provider that offers 2FA for webmail?
Yes, this could be it.
taubek··on Ask HN: Is there a hosting provider that offers 2FA for webmail?
Mailbox.org is one of the alternatives that I was looking at.

I’m just surprised that there is a bunch of hosting companies that say “we offer hosting and webmail in one package” but without 2FA. So I was wondering is 2FA so complex that it is not part of entry level hosting services.
