tasogare··on The Vaccine Moment, part one
If that were the case the medias would give the number of deaths, which is the main "lasting repercussion" of covid. Instead they are focusing on the number of cases, to distill fear, which is a devious metrics since the virus has a very very little lethality in the overwhelming part of the population. Even the number of deaths, when not ventilated by age, is actually just fearmongering too.

The article is right, most of the West lost its mind, and its more important value, freedom. And the mass is chearfully applauding, spitting on the non-vaccinated. This is very visible for me, living in Japan, where the most dystopian measures (forced vaccination, QR codes, lockdowns, deportation camps) aren't in effect and where the situation is not worse (arguely better) than in any country implementing those. The measures are not about health since a long time and governments are more clearly than ever the enemy of people they are supposed the take care of.

I therefore propose to use an experimental vaccine using Guillotinine (a molecule related to quinine) and administer it to a selected test subjects such as Pfizer's and Moderna CEOs, CEO of big TV network as well as a few ministers of health and selected parliamentarians. I bet that covid will cease to be a thing in less than two weeks after injection.

tasogare··on Dating Advice for Guys
> Don't ever take dating advice from women. What women think they want and what they actually want are two different things.

This. When women give dating advice they imagine themselves being asked out by an attractive guy. The thing is, the same exact action yields to two drastically different reaction depending on whether she considers the guy as a potential sexual partner or not.

For example, saying a little innuendo from the attractive male will be seen as flirting. The same remark from someone she's not attracted will be labeled as sexual harassment. And this is the case with every possible action. Touching her butt? Totally ok if she's into you. Better have a good lawyer otherwise.

tasogare··on Help Is This Arabic?
I had to deal with Arabic one for a coworker, in a database where most other data were in English. The main pain point was the right to left writing and thus the weird behavior for selecting text that occurred in the text editor when mixing scripts. I wish I could force selection to always be right to left even if that doesn't make sense in the target language but would make copy pasting easier.
tasogare··on Louis Armstrong shaped the sound of Ghana
Your comments on the topic are really interesting. You could open a blog on it. Most Europeans have zero ideas about how things really are working in Africa, besides a few stereotypes.
tasogare··on Cancel Mainstream Media
Seems it's just blocking accounts on Twitter. Not radical enough, blocking Twitter itself is a good first step.
tasogare··on Redesigned Notepad for Windows 11
Always the same crap with MS redesigns those days (like the Terminal one): there is fancy useless shit like Dark Theme but the basics like a functional IME are broken. What the point of a text editor if it well, can't input text?
tasogare··on Redesigned Notepad for Windows 11
Why not releasing it as NewNotepad or something? This way it keeps the old one working but provides a newer alternative. Like Paint and 3DPaint or whatever it is called.
tasogare··on Diacritical Marks in Unicode
Not to mention loanwords (saké, canapé, risqué, voilà, déjà vu) and common nouns having ö as well like coördination. It's baffling that a native speaker isn't aware of the orthography of his own language.
tasogare··on Tshwane District Omicron Variant Patient Profile – Early Features
It's been two years the media are saying "the hospital capabilities will be overflowed if this or that". It never happened. Each "wave" is small than the precedent and the disease is now somewhat known. The situation even seems fine enough in some countries that they fired a part of their health workers.
tasogare··on Tshwane District Omicron Variant Patient Profile – Early Features
I live in Japan, there was no lockdown and the disease didn't get worst than any other countries that took very harsh measures. Given how restrictive those measures are in comparison to the epsilon effect they have, it's clear it's better to respect people rights instead of crushing them under some heavy-handed wishful thinking.
tasogare··on How Bad Is Omicron?
No. Also it's kinda over already, save for the media fearmongering. It's ridiculous to expect 0 death worldwide for any disease. We have to accept a few people will die of it from times to times, just like it is with the flu (which is targeting the same population anyway so nothing really changed).
tasogare··on How Bad Is Omicron?
Following that German minister's line of thinking that stated "by the end of this winter pretty much everyone in Germany will be vaccinated, recovered or dead" it's a really good news to expend quickly the second category. The sooner everyone will have antibodies, be it from natural immunity or paid one, the sooner society can stop revolving around saving a few months of life of a bunch of elderly at the expense of everything else.
tasogare··on Ask HN: Why doesn't anyone create a search engine comparable to 2005 Google?
I just tried it and the UI is kinda old and not mobile friendly but the English results I got were satisfying. Not the case for French though. I'll try again in the future, diversity in this landscape is important.
tasogare··on Germany locks down unvaccinated people, as leaders plan to make shots compulsory
We are in the worst timeline. At first I didn't had too much anger again the people willing to take part in the phase III trial, they were mostly just a SNS annoyance with their virtue signaling. Their choice, my choice. Now they're writing literal hateful messages all over the internet about people like me who made an informed choice but moreover fully supports authoritarian measures that are taken just to fuck with people. A government role is supposedly to help people, not to ruin their lives. Not to mention the huge toll on social relations and mental health of the population. It's since a long time since the covid question is not a health issue anymore, it's an excuse. The most infuriating things is how dumb the arguments of those people are, because if their vaccine were working they would be protected anyway and won't have to fear anything (also remember when 70% vaccinated was supposed to grant herd immunity? This have been memoryholed hard as well). It makes no fucking sense to push it to people under 30 who have like a chance over 300,000 to die from covid.
tasogare··on Jack Dorsey’s Square is changing its name to Block
Better spell it as bloc to manage local susceptibilities.
tasogare··on Lessons from a year of AI research
Your post rings true. On the contrary the linked article was written by an undergrad student having some introduction to research, for a short time (a year) with a supporting supervisor and network so of course his list is naive and idealistic. In reality research and methodology etc. doesn't matter much, it's baseline skill. 70-80% of a PhD come done to social things like relationship with advisor, ability to write papers that will be accepted for publication even if they're bullshit.
tasogare··on Web4 Should Run on LaTeX
Username checks out. It's not the same: HTML is interpreted and often modified on the fly (with JavaScript), with the source being a click away, but it's still just HTML. On the other hand Latex documents are compiled into other formats like PDF that are distributed, instead of the Latex source.
tasogare··on Web4 Should Run on LaTeX
Latex is not semantic, the fact it's using macro (which are factoring function calls) says it all. There is some degree of separation between content and presentation, but that's it.
tasogare··on Linus on Line Breaks (2020)
No it's not: a book is generally read from cover to cover (at least fiction) while code is split amongst various files. One is free to read them in any order, which is the opposite of continuous text.
tasogare··on South African doctor who raised alarm about omicron variant: ‘unusual but mild’
"older people - with co-morbidities such as diabetes" which that exact same population that is at risk with the existing variants... It's the at-risk group which is actually small.
tasogare··on The Cagots of France
The introduction was not very satisfactory about who they are so I checked Wikipedia in French. The hypothese is they are descendants from Goths, cornered in South-West at some point of history by Franks.
tasogare··on Ask HN: How worrying is the new Covid variant?
The overwhelming majority of people who died of it reached a very advanced age and had other medical conditions. They would probably have died of a normal flu too.

Your link is pure fake news. It's an article trying to pass a known side effect of the mRNA medication (myocarditis) as stemming from the virus. Also it's from the press of an authoritarian country that is deporting people into camps...

tasogare··on Ask HN: How worrying is the new Covid variant?
> The news coverage I'm reading

That's the real problem here. Turning off the TV and stopping reading the news, crafted precisely to generate anxiety, is the solution. It will probably be a nothingburger, but the media need something to divert from the "mysterious" heart attacks. Remember, two years ago covid was presented as a very deadly virus and it turned out to be only dangerous for a very specific and small segment of the population (70+ yo and obese people).

tasogare··on German government will push for a European federation
There is no way to do this in democratic way, French citizens already voted against it in 2005.

tasogare··on Don't bring a tree to a mesh fight
Great comment. I've worked on modeling a specific kind of data as graph and it was too limited. I thus used hypergraph and realized after a while it was in fact relational data, with hyperedge being like table like you explained. I still sticked to the graph model as it was convenient to not have the relationships hardcoded in a database.
tasogare··on When Will the FDA Approve Paxlovid?
> The Paxlovid trial was run by the best scientists Pfizer’s money can buy

Well, buying scientists is exactly the problem at hand with Pfizer et al.

And before one jump to call me names, it's a very similar situation to tabacco industry buying experiments on cigarettes, or oil industry and the climate change. What science need is more independent trials.

tasogare··on Cuba’s bet on home-grown Covid vaccines is paying off
> The people are well-educated, have a rich culture, good medical system

As this is exactly what is missing from the US, it's not hard to see how disastrous an economic and cultural colonization of Cuba by the USA would turn out.

tasogare··on What's behind the rapid disappearance of the delta variant in Japan
Government wanting to relaunch economy? Maybe they finally get that high count of infected doesn't matter if it doesn't kill people, and that the anti-social measures are going against other goals such as birth rate (which is made difficult since people meet way less than before) so it sends the memo to the media and scientists.
tasogare··on Women of the sea: Korea’s oldest free divers
The fact Kudara/Baekje kingdom is located in present day Korea does not mean it was populated with people having Korean culture and speaking Korean, as like you said some part of the peninsula has its own history. Some sort of Japonic language was spoken in the Korean peninsula[1] and the alliance between Baekje and some Japanese state at the time could have been because of related a culture.

In the hypothesis it wasn't the case, Japanese are indeed good at "Japanese-washing" successful people, by ignoring their foreign roots when convenient, while doing the reverse for people less successful. A pretty recent example is that of Momofuku Ando, inventor a cup ramen, born Taiwanese.

tasogare··on .NET 6 vs .NET 5 speedup
In which kind of world do you live that setting a single environment variable is too much technical work?[0] I have the feeling your post is more about shitting on .NET with a low effort excuse than genuine interest.

[0] set DOTNET_CLI_TELEMETRY_OPTOUT environment variable to 1 or true
