tapoxi··on Gemini 4 Argon
Revenue isn't profit, inference is expensive
tapoxi··on Using any C++ library in Godot
Godot is the best open source engine because it is dead simple to use, comes bundled with its own IDE and documentation, the editor runs on any platform that Godot runs (including the web) and the performance benefits for something like Bevy only apply to a handful of games that really need it.

Godot gives GDScript simplicity for the vast majority of use cases which is that iteration boon, provides C# for games that need the additional guardrails. For performance critical game scripts you can just jump to C++, Rust, Swift, etc.

But most game scripts are not performance critical. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 swept the game awards last year as an Unreal Engine game made using almost entirely visual scripting (blueprints).

tapoxi··on Windows 11½
I've been on KDE for the past 2 years and it's been a great experience. I wiped Windows everywhere (impractical before).

I keep it installed on a secondary drive just-in-case but I haven't booted into it in months.

tapoxi··on When did Google get so weird?
I searched for something, it told me that according to a YouTube video, the entire point of my search was wrong. I asked it for the source, I watched the video, it never made the claims Gemini hallucinated. I asked again and it claimed it scrubbed the video and found the point it made multiple times. I said those timecodes were wrong and it admitted it couldn't actually parse videos and just guessed.

What the fuck?

tapoxi··on Dutch governments builds alternative for Microsoft based on NixOS
It's stricter than Debian's, which is one of the most conservative Linux distros out there.
tapoxi··on Meta VR Glasses
Steam Frame has black and white passthrough but it's not good enough for AR. They sell a third party's passthrough camera as an add-on though which is $130 I think and clips on the front. Since the Frame runs open Linux with KDE this is really interesting to me.
tapoxi··on Unreal Agent
Sounds like a trademark issue when Epic ships a wildly popular Unreal Engine
tapoxi··on [dead]
My Volkswagen has ChatGPT and I've used it exactly once, and Android Auto has been pushing Gemini which makes my usual voice commands "play X on Spotify" take longer or fail as it misinterprets the results.

Fun party trick I suppose.

tapoxi··on I said no and Apple said yes
I ran into this too. It blew my mind that I could run Linux just fine but I couldn't even install Windows because it had no wifi driver and it wouldn't install without a network connection.

I tried putting the driver files on a USB stick but the Windows installer refused to recognize those.

tapoxi··on Apple Copland D11E4 Booting in the Browser
The decision to axe it and go with NeXT was widely attributed to Ellen Hancock (RIP)
tapoxi··on US Revokes Limits on Power Plants' Climate Pollution
It's not taxpayer funded, the grid has an overabundance of daytime solar that exceeds their capacity to store it.

tapoxi··on Steam Frame starts at $1059
This machine runs Linux, it comes with KDE. This is the open Apple Vision Pro alternative that you can use as a real computer.

It comes with a black and white passthrough camera but you can add on a 5K color one.

There's ongoing work for a full Plasma XR mode, so you aren't restricted to a "virtual desktop" experience: https://invent.kde.org/plasma/kwin/-/merge_requests/8671

tapoxi··on Bing Wallpaper showing Ad for Harry Potter and Fantastic beasts box set
To be fair there because most of the submissions about Windows are negative ones, which means the comments are either "Windows sucks" or "I'm glad I stopped using Windows"

The last time I remember hearing positive news about Windows was the Win 7 launch.

I recently wiped Windows off my wife's machine after the last straw broke with Windows - it gave her a full screen prompt after a reboot that forced her back to Edge and copied all of her local documents to OneDrive.

She only plays a handful of games and browses the web, Bazzite was a no-brainer replacement.

tapoxi··on Ubisoft's FOR HONOR will block SteamOS / Linux players starting September 10
But the people saying "it'll run fine" are also the people running the store and ultimately responsible for refunds in this situation.

So you expect them to deny refunds and then say "hey you shouldn't have believed us"?

tapoxi··on Ubisoft's FOR HONOR will block SteamOS / Linux players starting September 10
When the company running the store sells three hardware products where they say "ignore that, it'll work on our OS" they need to take responsibility.

Valve absolutely knows what platform you've logged into desktop Steam from even when you're on a mobile device, and can pop up a dialog during purchase saying "This game requires Microsoft Windows, and you have not been active on that platform in the past 30 days. This game will be supported by Steam Play, and developer support is not guaranteed."

That's a totally reasonable ask.

tapoxi··on Ubisoft's FOR HONOR will block SteamOS / Linux players starting September 10
The money was given to Valve, which then gave money to Ubisoft. Valve sells the game and handles refunds.
tapoxi··on Ubisoft's FOR HONOR will block SteamOS / Linux players starting September 10
Valve should. Valve is the one making these games available for purchase on non-Windows platforms. Ubisoft never supported this.

EAC supports Linux, but by doing so you're disabling a number of security features since you're making the anti-cheat run entirely in userspace.

Remember these games aren't Linux native either, so it allows Windows-using cheaters to lie to the process that they're on Linux and to only use userspace protection. The cheat then runs in kernel space and remains invisible.

The only realistic way to solve this on Linux is enforcing secure boot w/trusted kernels and then running the anti-cheat in sandboxed eBPF kernel space. Embark is looking at this approach.

tapoxi··on Haiku R1/beta6 has been released
Haiku feeds off the interest and fun it brings to its developers. If you put AI in the mix you can poison what they do for fun and sink the project.
tapoxi··on SteamOS 3.9.0 Preview
They're doing this, it's the "use experimental SteamRT 3 client" in the interface settings.
tapoxi··on Highest-ever ocean temperature measured as powerful El Niño forms
I mean we're staring at apocalypse here so it's not like the alternative is any better.
tapoxi··on Signal is working on a paid option to create an account without a phone number
We've had a lot of open systems and protocols, SIP, XMPP, Matrix, desktop Linux, Mastodon. It only gains adoption from the technologically savvy and fails to capture a regular user base.

My mother, a 70 year old retired special education teacher, got me and my extended family (21 people) on Signal. I didn't tell her about it, I didn't encourage her to use it, I didn't step her through the process. She doesn't know how to make a folder.

Signal hasn't beaten WhatsApp (which still uses Signal protocol) due to network effects, but it is a great solution for everyday users.

tapoxi··on Xbox goes down. You can't play games you own on disc
I actually went into reading this thinking I'd agree with you that "yeah that's such hyperbole they must have made something good", and to my shock the good things they have shipped they eventually ruined.

Examples: Edge (bloated with ads and Copilot), Office (now a subscription, hasn't evolved, annoying integration with copilot), Skype (dead), Halo (virtually dead), Doom (studio gutted), Visual Studio Code (locked down marketplace, replaced plugins with their own, now a giant GitHub copilot ad), Flight Simulator (massive regression with 2024)

tapoxi··on US Schools Are Ditching Chromebooks for MacBooks by the Thousands
You can assign a mobile device policy on the Mac, and the OS is image based (like a Chromebook). They are much more flexible than Chromebooks, you're not running Adobe Premier or Logic on ChromeOS.

The price is also close enough that its probably worth the migration.

I think Google completely failed to capitalize on its lead, and is probably making things worse by replacing the platform with Android and rebranding things.

tapoxi··on Linux desktop market share has hit over 10% in North America
Yea Chromebooks are wildly popular in American education. They've replaced the school desktop PC.
tapoxi··on Codeberg Bans Cryptocurrency Projects
GitLab is a kitchen sink tool for all the good and bad that entails. Forgejo is much more lightweight.
