tannedNerd··on A 'Doxxing Truck' Displaying Students' Faces Comes to Harvard's Campus
There is an easy solution if a group does something you don’t agree with. Post your disagreement with the group and that you are leaving.
tannedNerd··on A 'Doxxing Truck' Displaying Students' Faces Comes to Harvard's Campus
So we shouldn’t have consequences for our actions? Are you saying I don’t understand forgiveness for mistakes? That is why I said the student groups that retracted their statements should be spared, but this is saying you should be able to run into a crowded theater and yell fire with no consequence.

Also like usual with the over reaction. This isn’t a thought crime. It’s simply amplifying their own hate speech. If they don’t like the attention so much maybe they shouldn’t be making such heinous statements. This is just the community reacting to something you are I guess are fine with. And good job trying to smear me instead of responding with facts!

edit for clarity

tannedNerd··on A 'Doxxing Truck' Displaying Students' Faces Comes to Harvard's Campus
As much as I hate doxxing anonymous accounts, I’m kinda ok with this. You want to release heinous statements without a retraction you deserve real world consequences. The student groups that issued retractions should be spared but anyone who supports barbarism should be shunned and punished. Also don’t give me the bs that they posted they hate all civilian lives lost, they only posted that after the NYU student lost their job for that horrible newsletter and got worried about consequences. Before that there was no mention of them caring one bit about the innocents massacred at a music festival or dragged out of their safe rooms, then beheaded. Instead there was a celebratory undertone in all their posts as if they were celebrating the massacre of innocents Typo edit
tannedNerd··on The First Private High Speed Rail Line in 100 Years Will Link Miami and Orlando
I mean how many cars are used solely to drive from the airport and then sit in a hotel parking lot for the next week only to be driven back to the airport. 50% seems a conservative number considering that resorts like Disney world have their own transit systems.
tannedNerd··on New California rules would crush rooftop solar for renters
I have seriously been considering trying to start a petition to make the CPUC a voted office again.

If you look at where the CPUC members end up after their time “protecting the public” you wouldn’t wrong to be infuriated. In fact they have not denied a rate increase in the last 25+ years. They rubber stamp everything for the utilities so they can get their 200k+ jobs with them after!

tannedNerd··on SF Becomes First U.S. City Where Electrified Cars Make Up 50% of Sales
They do a daily good job off offsetting most people’s charging to midnight-6am by setting high rates per KWH during the day then dropping them to something reasonable during the night time to encourage charging when the grid is basically at it highest capacity
tannedNerd··on Ford Will Use Tesla EV Charging, but That's Only Part of the Story
Maybe… the big problem is that they said it’s going to be using fords tech stack and app so I imagine there will be some communication from the car to the charger to regulate the charging speed as not all super chargers have the magic dock upgrade that allows them to ”talk” with third party cars properly or even start without the app. That adapter maybe be doing some of that work which could make it harder to reverse engineer as you’ll still need something to auth and start charging at non magic dock chargers.
tannedNerd··on Peloton CEO quit after laying off 2,800. A lesson about how not to lead (2022)
I mean you could say the anti peloton (mirror lol?) shill bots are out hard based on your post. Just because lots of people find a system that works for them you have to tear it down and make fun of it?

The privilege of this is ridiculous. Not everyone has a safe place they can ride around outside for free at. I live in a big city in California and wouldn’t be caught dead riding outside from the terrible air quality to the horrible drivers that could kill me at seconds notice because the bike infrastructure around here is terrible. And if I wanted to get somewhere in the city where it’s better I need to pay for transit or drive, so not free.

I’m a software engineer who loves using it to get a workout in during my day that would otherwise require me as you say travel 15 min each way to closest gym, pay for a gym membership that’s way more than 44 bucks and includes a shitty spin bike that isn’t maintained well unless it’s in a class that I have follow their schedule for. Then head back home 15 min. Yessss so much easer then picking a class to start when I want to and not wasting 30 min driving.

tannedNerd··on Tesla gives update on battery degradation: only 12% after 200k miles
Only got under 10% twice in the last 3 years, mainly due to temp and headwinds having a bigger effect than I expected on a climb up to Tahoe. I moved from the Bay to Tahoe (where it was in a heated garage and mainly used my 4x4 during the winter) to San Diego currently so it’s been pretty babied. Granted I didn’t have charging at home in the bay, but was also careful not to leave it over night with less than 60% charge.

I think a lot of it has to do with luck of the draw, but most tend to loss 10% in the first year then hang out there losing a 1% or so each following year.

tannedNerd··on Tesla gives update on battery degradation: only 12% after 200k miles
And yet I have 12% degradation on my 2020 SR+ after only 42k miles. Tesla can cherry pick all they want but on average most of their battery packs are around ~13% at 100k if things like teslascope etc are to believed.
tannedNerd··on Tesla gives update on battery degradation: only 12% after 200k miles
And counter point I’ve got 42k miles on my 2020 3 SR+ and am at 12% with about half of those miles on super chargers.

tannedNerd··on California's population dropped by 500k in 2 years
And this is why is California is trying to get a 10 year exit tax on your income. They know they’ve fucked their golden goose so they need to extract as much as they can before the system collapses on itself from lack of top earners to pay the majority of the income tax.
tannedNerd··on California's population dropped by 500k in 2 years
If you read the original source (not trying to be snarky, just literally saw the same article there a day or two ago) it’s from the LA times which makes sense why it would focus on California
tannedNerd··on Ask HN: How will AI impact the future of CRUD apps?
Similar to the way it currently works with AI generated video or even code. Yes you can create simple stuff just like on retool, but want it to look polished like or be extremely light weight and performant? Still going to have to go in and know enough to fine tune or create custom new components, backends, data models etc.

So basically a parking app that save you a spot, aka low hanging fruit now, sure the ai stuff will eat that market, but want something like Carrot Weather, ToDoist, etc you are going to need someone to build it.

tannedNerd··on Wait, Are We Supposed to Tip 25% Everywhere Now?
They absolutely would notice, you are only allowed to under pay tipped staff under the assumption that with tips they rise above min wage. No tips and all of sudden you have to make the difference from 2.50 ish an hour to min wage which can be 16+ here.
tannedNerd··on New video of Tesla crash demonstrates the problem of semi-automated driving
It is interesting that in all the talks with my friends that have a Tesla and have tried other driver assist features from other companies. Is that Tesla is only one we are worried about phantom braking aka a false positive and as such we keep the foot near the gas instead of the brakes.

I’ve also developed a reaction to reach for the stalk with my other hand and disable it at the same time so I’m no longer fighting it.

tannedNerd··on The California roll was invented by a Japanese-Canadian chef (2020)
But no place in the mission calls them California burritos. It’s just a burrito. Vs I have had California burritos in San Francisco that are called that because of the French fries.
tannedNerd··on What frequent fliers do for status
I did this a bunch during the cheap award flights during the pandemic, when they started counting those toward status points.

I basically skipped getting a coworking spot for a month and would hop on random flights I could book like SAN-JFK round trip same day on delta for only 16,000 skymiles (would net around 5,000 mqms). I would almost always get bumped to first and Deltas wifi is reliable enough to work from the air.

At this point I’ve banked enough MQMs that I just have to hit the spend min on my Amex (easy when you are self employed and can pay taxes on it) to keep platinum for the next 3 years without any flying.

tannedNerd··on IRS warns taxpayers about new $600 threshold for third-party payment reporting
Except you did. You framed it as in totally congress is unbalanced because of the senate. To someone not from the US that distinction isn’t a material one and you used that to make it seem that there is no population balancing mechanism. So while you may not believe you were intentionally dishonest, it comes off that way to everyone else.

tannedNerd··on Tesla engineers were on-site to evaluate the Twitter staff’s code, workers said
This reeks of the arrogance someone who has never gone through recession layoffs. Sometimes your division gets slashed for no reason other then your vp wasn’t slightly more persuasive. When investors want to see cuts, lots of good people end up fired for no reason other than bad luck.

Trying to time a parachute into a not super terrible market isn’t the worst idea. Plus usually the first and second round are the most generous. As belt tightening gets worse and the PR isn’t as bad expect worse benefits.
