tammer··on One-on-one meetings are underrated, whereas group meetings waste time
One-on-one meetings are the single most under-rated (because they are the single most useful) tool for any modern professional.

There is a clear technique on how to make these meetings successful that I don’t see being discussed or shared.

tammer··on Modern Media Is a DoS Attack on Free Will
I follow a similar protocol & find it very helpful. The missing link for me was the events function of Facebook, which I find endlessly useful. Luckily FB now has a standalone app specifically for this, Facebook Local. Its no-nonsense, no ads, just relevant events. Plus, the feed it gives you actually ends!
tammer··on All 500 of the world's top 500 supercomputers are running Linux

With an anti-science regime in charge of the government, America will only continue to see its technological lead decline.
Brutal to be confronted with such a cutting opinion in an otherwise congenial article and to have no thoughts of disagreement.
tammer··on Keyboard latency
For more on this I highly recommend Jimena Canales' "A Tenth of a Second: A History"[1]

tammer··on The trouble with text-only email
The company that truly improves email will be a fixture and a household name. Its a devilishly hard problem, though. But one with immense potential.

I think a big limitation of current attempts are the focus on closed teams/enterprises and making a "clean break" from email. WhatsApp seamlessly bridged a gap between modern messaging and telecom to produce grand success — the same can be done with email.

tammer··on The impossible dream of USB-C
I think these are actually the most minor problems with the USB-C vision. The VAST majority of consumers will never encounter a thunderbolt device, and the ones that do can be expected to understand the cable difference.

What is far more of an issue for the standard is the established network effect. USB-A has become so commonplace that its built into our furniture, and micro-USB is a legally defined requirement for device charging in some areas. These foundational forces will prove to be a massive deterrent to USB-C uptake, and far more of a risk to the vision than multiple cable types that are clearly labeled!

But, the bright side of this I think is Apple's adoption of the Qi charging standard. Its clear that an evolutional jump to wireless charging will entail new technology, so I see Qi taking up the "one way to charge everything" vision.

tammer··on How the Catalan government uses IPFS to sidestep Spain's legal block
I see IPFS as the single most promising & important software projects in the world today.
tammer··on iOS 11 reviewed
Eh it sounds to me that this is a great quick fix for the "I'm slightly too far from the AP to have bandwidth but I'm still maintaining a connection" problem I have almost daily. Will make an obscure security concern you've identified slightly more difficult to deal with. If you don't prefer trade offs like this, Apple likely isn't the best digital provider for you.
tammer··on Thinkpad X62
Part of me still misses my beloved IBM-made X31. But ultimately even if I could choose one with modern components/specs, the thing that would keep me on a MacBook (disregarding software) is the unibody enclosure. Much better to have a machine that dents instead of chips. Beauty so rarely bespeaks durability in design but a CNC machined chassis is really an evolutionary leap for mobile devices.
tammer··on DuckDuckHack is now in Maintenance Mode
This is a great observation & seems to dovetail with technologies like IPFS.[1]

tammer··on Government launches login.gov to simplify access to public services
This is an excellent point and highlights the brutal need people of all walks have for a better authentication paradigm.
tammer··on Free Data Recovery of Wet Phones and Hard Drives for Hurricane Harvey Victims
As an IT person who's ended up having to use Drive Savers a number of times (don't ask), I can speak to their great service. They're a standout in an industry of nickel & dimers.
tammer··on Decommissioned mobile devices as cheap energy-efficient compute nodes
I saw a talk at my university by a prolific robotics engineer who explained that for small drones designed to work by swarming & collaborating, it is much more cost effective to use old Samsung Galaxy phones as the "brain" of a drone platform rather than integrating standalone CPU's. As far as I know they still use this as their primary design strategy.
tammer··on Launch HN: Mystro (YC S17) – Automation for On-Demand Drivers
This isn't a great question, as the child comments illustrate; effectively its a proven tenet of startup culture that execution and growth are key steps to profitability rather than the uniqueness of an idea or service.

I have a similar but I think more valid question, however, which is how do you plan on staying compatible with the ride-sharing companies themselves, who I assume will eventually attempt to lock you out of their services as they come to see you helping their competitors?

tammer··on Intel Launches 8th Generation CPUs, Starting with Kaby Lake Refresh
Curious what your use case is that entails ECC? Are you currently being held back without it?
tammer··on Apple Plans to Release a Cellular-Capable Watch to Break iPhone Ties
Oh how quickly we forget in the tech community. An internet-focused phone was laughable with the data plans of 2006.
tammer··on The secret to a long and healthy life? Eat less
I eat a protein & fat heavy breakfast & dinner, & skip "lunch". I find it to be highly effective at keeping me productive through the day (both more time & more steady energy cycle).
tammer··on Unmanned U.S. Air Force space plane lands after secret, two-year mission
Surprised nobody's mentioned this possibility as it usually comes up re: the X-37B. Terrifying but I think not out of the question given the strategic potential of such a weapon.

tammer··on National Park Maps
I'm a huge fan of a little app called Maplets.[1] Has saved me on a number of occasions, and highlights how limited the big name mapping tools really still are for all kinds of navigation information.

tammer··on Raising the American Weakling
Really many forward standing poses offer opportunity to use the mat as resistance (even downward-facing dog). Probably want to look into this with an instructor as there are techniques to improve resistance while limiting tendon strain.

Basic grip exercises like balling & extending fists can be easily worked into practice as well, perhaps while focusing on the feet in a toe squat.

tammer··on Raising the American Weakling
I find practicing yoga to be surprisingly helpful in building grip strength. Many balancing postures are really good for this.
tammer··on A US-born NASA scientist was detained at the border until he unlocked his phone
Well... sure. Problem is I don't have 6 weeks to sit in a detention cell waiting for the ACLU to clear my case.
tammer··on Structured Procrastination: Do Less and Deceive Yourself
My tip? Make your to-do list your twitter. I.e., when you get that ping of dopamine depletion that makes you want to pop open a social network or similar, open your to-do list instead. Start out by just scrolling through it, then maybe go do whatever you were going to do. Ideally you'll have some small, easily completable tasks on the list along with the larger more annoying ones. If so, maybe sometime you’ll spot one you can get done really fast. Make sure you check off the item when you’re done. Do it enough & the goal is to rewire your reward drive towards productivity, eventually building up a chemical response to checking off items that’s greater than dipping into the infostream.
tammer··on Tesla factory worker calls for a union: “We need to stand up for ourselves”
Yes retaliation would be swift here, or the concerns would be bluntly ignored - this is why union organizing is a skilled effort and not something that can be fixed via algorithm.
tammer··on Elon Musk turns a tweet into reality in 6 days
In this instance the right move seems to have been made, but I do worry that stories like this will enable a new kind of techno-fascism. If Musk can change people's lives on timescales orders of magnitudes faster than governments, its going to go a long way to undermine people's faith in those governments.
tammer··on New DEA Rule Says CBD Oil Is Really Illegal
The elephant in the room regarding legalization is the overburdened prison system. As we saw with the recent Attica anniversary strikes, organized prisoner resistance is a huge threat to the security and economic status quo. Nothing would galvanize resistance like being incarcerated for a crime which is no longer illegal.

Therefore in a more liberal climate I would expect to see progressive access laws continue to be available to non-impoverished white populations, with the federal schedule remaining intact. Now, I simply expect a return to the old strategies for corralling free labor.

tammer··on Bill Gates et. al. launch massive clean-energy fund to fight climate change
Remember that a function of at least the American Constitution is to smooth processes of change over many years for the purposes of stability.

Climate change is a particular challenge here: immediate action is required, but warning signs are too diffuse to work against political inertia.

tammer··on Milking the iPhone
This article is been written dozens of times, over three decades. It hasn't proven true yet.
tammer··on Amazon Go
Indeed, separate from the question of livelihoods (which could be supplemented via ideas like basic income), and less some meaningless greetings, the engagement I would up having would be far more meaningful if employment was a matter of satisfaction rather than utility.
tammer··on Tell HN: Riseup.net fails to update canary; fingerprints deleted without notice
