Yes, 'qualified bidders'. And what are the qualifications to bid to do the cabinets on a 6 million dollar public works/commercial building, which means the building might have $300,000+ of cabinets at most? Basically zero qualifications besides having a license. And with public works, yes the GCs will basically go with the lowest bidder. And while change orders do happen, it's the GCs job to get them to stick to their bid or otherwise they're just burning their own money.

I'm not just lying. Decades of experience in this. Yes construction basically lowest bidder outside of some private construction where relationships count for a bit, but even then the subs with relationships will get squeezed to match the lowest bidder.

Yes I have, and my family has for their entire life, and I created an entire saas for the construction industry that has enough paying customers to support myself easily.
talldatethrow··on Booking.com ignores twofactor, lets everyone email-login without a password
The entire construction industry is basically based around hiring the lowest bidder, especially in public works, and other than giant projects where somehow corruption allows them to collect more than their bid, these jobs basically get performed to a decent standard by the lowest bidder.

But even in programming, you can't tell me there arent well earned reputations out there.

It's obvious what's going on. The entire thing has been outsourced to a certain country and this is basically standard for work out of that country.

As a fun reminder of how different people are, the months to me are basically only their numeric value, and if someone starts taking about October I think to myself "October? Oh ya, the 10th month, got it."

If a European travels to grocery store in Nevada, assuming they'd be protected by EU laws is a bit goofy.

If they travel to my US server digitally and want my data back, I shouldn't have to know EU laws. They came to me.

I guess you could argue that if I'm then willing to send them data, then I need to play the game. Like a Nevada store that ships to France.

Makes sense. In a similar vein, once fast food places started stating calories per item... It actually helped me maximize calories per dollar and eat more calories, which seems opposite of the original goal of helping people limit their calories. Who is going to fast food to keep calories low?

I've been blaming MBAs for ruining large companies for about 15 years. More and more of them were minted, and true to their word, they really have gotten good at extracting every last dollar out of whatever a company sells.

Now that small business owners are watching/listening constantly to small business gurus and hustle gurus, those businesses are screwing customers in ways I didnt see 20 years ago.

I keep in contact with many small business owners in construction and repair, and almost everyone now thinks that its better to get less work and just charge more. Sure they could pour 3 driveways a week and make $2k profit per driveway, but honestly they prefer to do and make $6k profit on 1 driveway a week and call it a day. I see this constantly in small low employee count construction companies.

If she's not on social media, what is she even doing online these days?

Watching YouTube? Reading blogs about favorite subjects?

YouTube is basically as bad as any social media IMO since it has an endless stream of stimulus that's artificially easy to consume.

talldatethrow··on Taking away iPhone made daughter a better person
Very true. My childhood friend and I were major computer nerds from 1991 to 2002. Then I left for college and he didn't somehow. We had such matched similar personalities for those 10 years.

By 2008 when I saw him he had totally fallen off from computers and couldn't care less.

I'm engrossed in tech still and I do waste wayyy to much time on HN, blogs, reading, YouTube, Twitter and the like. No doubt I have a problem..

My friend though died last year of heroin/fentanyl overdose. He had been struggling with it for 5+ years. Same as I have with modern phones. I wish he had gotten addicted to YouTube shorts instead.

From my experience taking it hundreds of times over 10+ years, from at least 10 different sources.. since almost every source had a distinctive side effect from the others, while entire packets of some sources had zero side effects for me... I'd blame the shady quality of the genetics more likely than the actual original drug.

I'm sure the real drug has some mild side effects too for some people, but the fact that I can distinctively tell the difference between sources makes me think a lot of other stuff is making it into the generics.

talldatethrow··on Viagra improves brain blood flow and could help to prevent dementia
Were you taking authentic or internet genetics from China/India?

Ive gone through a decent amount of generics over the years, from several sources, and even though the label is the same, they almost all act differently on me. Some give me a flushed red face. Some cause a dull headache. Some don't cause anything negative thank God. They all work though.

I think the Indian/Chinese ones are laced with garbage and what I feel depends on what else was in there.

talldatethrow··on It's time to take phones away from students
Making things illegal and not accepted works decently well. There wasn't a drug vending machine at my school, even though a few rogue students were probably buying and selling drugs at my highschool. Thus I was less likely to do drugs.

Very few handguns are in students backpacks, because we don't accept it. If we didn't accept cell phones, we'd have a lot fewer kids suffering from them.

Not everyone is as accepting of fraud as you.

That is still not the same thing as a deadbeat dad, which is someone that knowingly created a child and then abandoned it.

You can buy 14' fly J sailboats with trailer for $500 once in a while, or all the time for $1000.

Obviously it's not some keeled ocean going vessel you keep at the marina.

But let's use your version.. a tiny boy scout dingy you can lift by yourself and put in the water. Should it cost $40 to put that in the water?

talldatethrow··on In Colorado, an ambitious new highway policy is not building them
A sailboat costs $500+ on Craigslist or Facebook marketplace.

We had one when my mom was cleaning a convalescent home as her job, and commuting 35 miles one way to do it.

My dad worked 55+ hours a week, and commuted 60 miles one way to do it.

So unless you think my dad let my mom clean hospital floors and bathrooms while we weren't low income, I'd argue you can.

talldatethrow··on In Colorado, an ambitious new highway policy is not building them
Things being free in public helps low income people live nice fulfilled lives still.

Now it costs $40 to launch a sailboat at my local reservoir. Even state camping spots are $40+ it seems in areas I know aren't full all the time.

It costs like $20 in extra gas tax to drive to LA with your friends because California can't just set the income tax appropriately?

I could go on and on. The income tax to me sounds pretty fair. But making a poor person living paycheck to paycheck come up with $40 to go to the lake with a cheap sailboat seems harsh to me (my dad and I used to go as a Kid. It was $5 then. And my dad made $20 an hour as a recent immigrant in construction).

And don't start that people that use services should pay. My tax money goes to a lot of things I don't use or even agree with.

I've been a serial date since 2001. Moved to Android after an iPhone 3S mishap. So at least a decade on android.

I have heard at least 10 women JOKE about my android. I'd say atleast 2 gfs in those years eventually made some snide remark.

Will you get dumped for having an android? No. Is it a small -1 mark for most women? I would say so.

And no these aren't totally brainless women. It's been doctors, MBA grads, women in tech, a writer.. I honestly think more regular woman are more sane about it actually and wouldn't care as much as 'fancier' women.

What do you think made a wealthy person be a 'deadbeat dad' and not want to acknowledge the child?

Wondering you can imagine a scenario you'd be ok with.

I for one know of a guy that was told by his gf she was on birth control. Turns out she purposely wasn't so that that she could have a baby with him. This isn't someone's guess. This was told to my sister by her best friend.

talldatethrow··on EV startup Fisker's collapse: how the company crumbled
In a way, sure. In reality it's just joining of two jobs that shouldn't be joined.

I was great at sales, and became a sales manager thus sales for the whole team went up considerably. I had guys twice my age coming to me thanking me for helping them earn more than they ever had in their sales career.

Why someone thought it made sense to task me with managing the sale of 150 cars a month, helping 10+ salespeople close deals AND random bs dealer paperwork not at all related to sales I will never understand. But that's what the industry does. Usually average sales people are promoted to sales manager, so they don't focus on helping salespeople that much, and instead enjoy the random paperwork associated with the position.

I wasn't willing to hurt sales of the team in order to have time to do paperwork, so I let all the paperwork slip. Other people let the sales slip so paperwork stayed correct.

talldatethrow··on EV startup Fisker's collapse: how the company crumbled
The problem is that "move fast and break things" kind of people are terrible at that kind of work.

I was in car sales and was top 0.1% nationwide at it. Eventually I moved into management. And while sales for the dealership as a whole went up considerably, paperwork became a nightmare. The office lady's were at their breaking point after 6 months and wrote to the owner that in their 30 years of managing the dealership back office, they had never seen such bad paperwork processes.

Sometimes the people good at driving things forward are terrible at cleaning up after themselves.

Taxes you pay pay for this, or your employer pays it instead of paying you.

Now you can argue that health care costs less on a per basis, or even per productive taxpayer basis, but that's a different matter. Maybe the US could recreate your healthcare COST system, but it doesn't have to also take on your payment system (tax instead of direct)

talldatethrow··on I sold TinyPilot, my first successful business
I have a feeling your employer is paying the difference, so basically you're paying one way or another.
talldatethrow··on The rise of the disposable car
Yes that video from Dave's shop has been making the rounds. Its definitely a problem but honestly if the seal was removed and the exterior, interior, and depth were measured it can be purchased by spec instead of by a parts match for the exact transmission. That's like saying a furniture company won't sell me a screw that I lost, so the cabinet is worthless. I spec what kind of screw I need by taking a sample of another or measurements of another and go buy a generic screw.
talldatethrow··on The rise of the disposable car
Every vehicle is fixable. When you replace your modern vehicle, someone buys it and fixes it and sells it for a profit.

I've had friends trade in $30k vehicles with problems for $15k and then be surprised when it's on the dealer website in 7 days for $30k fixed.

talldatethrow··on The rise of the disposable car
Subaru CVTs tend to burn up a solenoid in the valve body. They are available for $30-40 on eBay and take about 3 hours to do for the first time.

Dealers charge $3000 for the job. They install all new valve bodies for about $1200, and for some reason want 8 hours for the job.

I helped a friend do it after watching some YouTube videos, and we just swapped the one bad solenoid. 20k miles later, 120k total, everything is fine.

The problem isn't always the cars even. It's the entire repair model.
