takanori··on Ask HN: How to be less opinionated?
Listen. If you really listen to peoples opinion you’ll see the truth in their conviction after a certain point. I will often stay silent while listening other than confirming words to indicate I’m listening for uncomfortably long. People break awkward silence by continuing to talk. They longer they go on, the stronger or weaker their opinion point of view becomes.

Reflect. Revisit opinions you or others had in the past now. Are they still true. In my experience most opinions from the past end up being misguided. On this reflection I’m more skeptical while listening.

Write. Writing is thinking. Don’t start a newsletter or blog. Buy a cheap notebook and pen and write daily. That’s how you develop opinions.

takanori··on Google CEO tells employees not to ‘equate fun with money’ in heated meeting
> “I remember when Google was small and scrappy,” he said. “Fun didn’t always — we shouldn’t always equate fun with money. I think you can walk into a hard-working startup and people may be having fun and it shouldn’t always equate to money.”

Google is not small. Is too regulated to be scrappy. And is NOT a startup

It’s an ads monopoly. Working there is all about making money.

takanori··on Twitter Trackers Jeopardize Military Aircraft
The fact that this sort of tracking is at all possible is what makes the internet so awesome…
takanori··on Good conversations have lots of doorknobs
This is a great story. I think there is something to listening to one’s voice vs reading letters
takanori··on Good conversations have lots of doorknobs
Great read. The pandemic forced my close friends to go from in person drinks to zooms but then quickly transitioned to async voice messages. The by product of this is everyone gets a chance to be a giver and taker without having take the spotlight immediately. Sometimes our conversations last weeks as someone comes in and reignites debate after bringing a new point. It’s all async. Curious is anyone else has found similar success with voice messaging as a medium.
takanori··on Investing in Flow
Andy Grove's response when John Doerr decided to leave intel for kleiner

"Come on, don't you want to be a general manager and own a real P&L? I'll let you run Intel's software division. John, venture capital, that's not a real job. It's like being a real estate agent."

takanori··on The metaverse is bullshit
Lol. I wasn’t implying it was cool or revolutionary. Just pointing out that all day every day I’m meeting with people who I’ll probably never meet in real life to complete tasks work.
takanori··on The metaverse is bullshit
My metaverse is work. Every morning I get up go to my office and spend 8 hours jumping from zoom call to zoom call from my gcal.
takanori··on Lidar stocks soar after report that Apple is working on a car for 2024
I wonder how the market would react if it was reported that Tesla was working on a laptop or smartphone.
takanori··on Solving Online Events
I actually think VR and events could be magic. You put it on and for 2 hours do a combination of keynotes and chose your own adventure experiences. If it incorporates interesting enough visuals with content I’d much prefer this to going somewhere in person for the week or sitting in front of a “online conference console” with streaming video and a chat window.
takanori··on Companies consider abandoning open office layouts to prevent disease spread
There is no mention of the elevator. Until they solve this the open/closed floor isn’t going to matter.
takanori··on The cost of virtualizing CS conferences
What if instead of text based chat you had to post voice responses. May make it more real?
takanori··on The iPad Awkwardly Turns 10
It’s an $11 Billion dollar hardware business that’s double the size of the Mac.

IMHO, the biggest innovation is that an enterprise can purchase one of these interest free for ~$20 / month (no interest) and get a brand new one in 3 years through Apple’s enterprise sales.

Hardware sold as a service. $11B.

I think the focus on multitasking misses the real innovation.

takanori··on Finding Time to Invest in Yourself
Idea #2 is genius. In my experience early employees become a liability as you scale and exceed their experience skill level. This makes it a win for them and for the org. Nothing worse than an early employee who is hanging on to a high level role when everyone knows they aren’t cutting it. What are some possible downsides of this?
takanori··on I think you're a silly goose

takanori··on PG&E turning off power to protect against fire has created a new disaster
That makes sense. This is a century old problem. Are there no viable technical solutions?
takanori··on PG&E turning off power to protect against fire has created a new disaster
How does routing work in these power lines? Is it similar to a network where you can route around problematic hubs? So if there is a line going through 4 miles of trees, you can just turn that part off... not the whole county?
takanori··on PG&E turning off power to protect against fire has created a new disaster
This was my thought as well. Nothing like a crisis to spur invention. I did the math on a power wall. It’s too expensive to be feasible. Two units with installation cost $20K. That doesn’t include the solar panels required to keep it charged. You can get a gas generator with similar capacity for $5K. Not to mention gas is typically readily available.

takanori··on How the Co-Founder of Foursquare Tracks His Life
Interesting. I’ve found myself using the new iOS 13 task app in a similar format to how Nareen uses Asana. Going kanban is a good idea. Though admittedly I run out of tasks fairly often and it not easy coming up with new stuff always.

Anyone ever seen a repository of tasks? I’m imagining finding something I’m interested in and subscribing to the daily tasks for that topic?

An unbelievably great series.
takanori··on Ask HN: If you're building a Facebook competitor, should you delete Facebook?
No. Your user base won’t (at first). You need to understand if users will open your app over fb. If you don’t have fb, you won’t know your users well enough to win them.
