sztanko··on Nobody gets promoted for simplicity
Did you get the job?
sztanko··on Time saved by AI offset by new work created, study suggests
Well, I think productivity gains should correlate with stock price growth. If we want stock prices to increase exponentially, sales must also grow exponentially, which means we need to become exponentially more productive. We can stop that — or we can stop tying company profitability to stock prices, which is already happening to some extent. And when we talk about 'greedy shareholders,' remember that often means pension funds - essentially our savings and our hope for a decent retirement, assuming productivity continues to grow exponentially.
sztanko··on Age and cognitive skills: Use it or lose it
How did it go?
sztanko··on Word Deconstructor – AI-powered tool for visualizing word origins and etymology
This is a great example of how one can make a big impact with a simple one-day side project.

It's simple an genius! Love it!

sztanko··on Show HN: Map with an LLM
How does it work? Translating free text to overpass? Looks very promising!
sztanko··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (November 2024)
FYI, links to your linkedIn and resume in your portfolio appear to be broken.
sztanko··on Flux: Open-source text-to-image model with 12B parameters
I don't think any of them can.
sztanko··on Building SimCity: How to put the world in a machine
In my childhood, me and my brother had access to computers (and simcity) only once a month. Because we still wanted to play, we actually made paper version of it, drawing maps ourselves and doing all the financial calculations on a separate sheet. I wanted to write my own simcity. Later on, I spent considerable amount of time designing the code, again on paper as I still didn't have access to computers. I think that had the most significant impact on my skills, and, eventually, my career. Thanks for that
sztanko··on POV-Ray – The Persistence of Vision Raytracer (2021)
I was thinking for some python (or similar language) api for Ray tracer that doesn't have a steep learning curve and is easy to use.
sztanko··on DuckDB Isn't Just Fast
Thanks for repeating yourself; this comment potentially influences my decision-making about DuckDB. Good to know about the negatives too.

At what data volumes does it start erroring out? Are these volumes larger than RAM? Is there a minimal example to reproduce it? Is this ticket related to your issue? https://github.com/duckdb/duckdb/issues/12480

sztanko··on POV-Ray – The Persistence of Vision Raytracer (2021)
Are there any modern alternatives to POV-Ray?
sztanko··on Deletion of user account
This is weird. Their privacy policy enforcing them to delete your account. I guess it is just a catch for those who don't know what GDPR us.

4. Right to deletion

- The personal data concerning you have been processed unlawfully.

The deletion of the personal data concerning you is necessary for compliance with a legal obligation under Union or Member State law to which the controller is subject.

sztanko··on End of the Line? Saudi Arabia to scale back plans for desert megacity
Economics explained YouTube channel has a good coverage on the rationale behind the crazy projects like this. In short, while the project itself might not make much sense, the infrastructure created to build it will stay and it makes it more accommodating to build other, more rational projects.

sztanko··on We built our customer data warehouse all on Postgres
In data engineering, there are frameworks like DBT that do exactly that. In fact, these are industry standards and the recommended way to do transformations and cleanups nowadays. This is essentially a mix of sql and jinja (and yaml files, for variables), you can create your own macros, it comes with it's own testing framework and also strict sql code formatters. Fits git flow quite well. The rationale is that it enables data analysts (data analytics engineers) to do quite sophisticated stuff still using sql. Also, if you are operating on datasets that are larger that a single machine can process, doing it in sql and passing to MPP engines like BigQuery and Snowflake are probably the only way to do it with relative ease.

In any case, this is for data engineering only. I wouldn't imagine doing this for live production stuff.

sztanko··on Trustfall: How to Query (Almost) Everything
Very cool! Is it possible to connect to steampipe via jdbc connector?

sztanko··on Ask HN: What is your home networking setup?
TP-Link Deco E4 Whole Home Mesh Wi-Fi System.

Pack of 3 works well enough to cover the whole house + shed located in the far end of the garden.

Also cheaper then google mesh.

sztanko··on Ask HN: Career change for elderly UK ex-convict?
Thanks :)
sztanko··on Ask HN: Career change for elderly UK ex-convict?
I think your solicitor and money laundering background might be valuable in the modern world trying to digitize everything.

- Have a look at LegalTech companies: https://www.maddyness.com/uk/2020/10/05/legaltech-12-startup.... I guess there is a small but existing ecosystem and community in those communities and you could get there.

- (Anti) Money laundering is a very hot topic in fintechs, and my experience is suggesting it is the most ML and AI intensive sector (trying to understand if a given transaction is related to money laundering is a non-supervised ML domain), there is a decent amount of graph algos involved and also the regulation is still quite archaic. I would say if positioned well, someone with backgrounds in legal and tech is a very valuable asset for any fintech.

I also believe your conviction could be turned into your strong asset - you already have a unique and genuine story to tell. If you are ok into public speaking, you could get a speaker slot any any AML|Legal + tech related conference.

I also believe going informal networking is more efficient then going through the formal recruitment process - this is where all your unique selling points would turn into disadvantages. Recruitment is designed to be scalable and you are an outlier there.

sztanko··on Show HN: Open-source UK fuel availability tracker
Yes. And project has launched today only.
sztanko··on Show HN: Open-source UK fuel availability tracker
Thank you! Will have a look.
sztanko··on Show HN: Open-source UK fuel availability tracker
LOL. I am not collecting location data at all. Not even session data. This is all done on client.
sztanko··on Show HN: Open-source UK fuel availability tracker
This project is like 8 hours old :)

It really depends on the traction now.

sztanko··on Show HN: Open-source UK fuel availability tracker
Thanks!

I think I know what is that :) I was grepping for "fuel" in osmconvert csv dump (as in ameniity=fuel)

sztanko··on Show HN: Open-source UK fuel availability tracker
Thanks, these are great ideas.

Names and locations of fuel stations are coming from openstreetmap, and it most cases it doesn't have good addresses.

I will add ability to edit locations and addresses of the fuel stations when submitting the updates. Eventually this could be added back to OSM.

Information here is fully crowdsourced, and the project is around 8 hours old. The more people contribute, the better it gets.
