synu··on Microplastics are finding their way into fruit and vegetables as they grow
Might as well be cancer as soon as possible?
synu··on How do I draw a pair of buttocks? (2014)
Wow, great detailing on the cleftal horizon. It's interesting to see this expressed mathematically in this way.
synu··on Airbnb removed my negative review
AirBnB somehow swung from consistently being better than hotels to always worse. Now I am just back to getting hotels, which is fine I guess, but it was nice while it lasted. I was a big AirBnB booster so it was disappointing to see this journey.
synu··on Ask HN: How does a hobby programmer get hired?
I did it by being excited to do jobs others didn’t want. At the time, it was build/release engineering.
synu··on JPMorgan to spend $1B on rental homes in the US to become a megalandlord
How would you practically become a lord by buying public shares on a working class salary?
synu··on Tesla confirms 285,000 people bought Full Self-Driving
Are the current capability features fully self driving (FSD)? I don’t have a Tesla but was under the impression they are not.

If not presumably they could argue that they never received what they subscribed to.

synu··on No, Romanian Cops Did Not Find Andrew Tate Because of a Pizza Box
There’s a good new podcast called The New Gurus from the BBC which explores this.
synu··on Remote work’s toll on cities
People here often talk make statements expanding on the original article and I was curious, but in any case thanks for confirming this is a US-only thing. Makes sense.
synu··on Remote work’s toll on cities
Where are you referring to where there are only two city types? I live in the Netherlands, neither of the two existing models you describe sound familiar in any countries around here, although our cities were certainly designed in a low tech past.
synu··on Silicon Valley offices less empty than other regions
I realise we are both sharing anecdotes, but I was at GitLab from about 250 employees to 1500 or so. It was all remote from the beginning, and it definitely wasn’t all senior, fully ramped employees with pre-established work social networks in Silicon Valley (or any other single place for that matter). There was mentorship, as well as social events and travel.

I’m sure your experience is factual, but maybe it’s not a universal truth or something generally applicable about remote work.

One thing for sure I would feel down about is if I moved somewhere I didn’t like to advance my career, and then everyone there started working remotely making the whole move pointless.

synu··on What Is a Wildcard Person?
You could still work on diverse things, but do it within your normal work day. I don’t think being a jack of all trades necessitates overwork or being taken advantage of (though it certainly could, but so could a deep expert who doesn’t have a diverse skill set).
synu··on What Is a Wildcard Person?
You can describe yourself as open to help wherever you can, and then give diverse real examples.
synu··on What Is a Wildcard Person?
I tried hiring on these traits in the past, one challenge there is that almost everyone self-identifies as this kind of person (and it’s probably even true, to an extent.)

It’s hard in the end to evaluate effectiveness of T-shaped people across a wide spectrum of potential tasks, but I am curious if others have figured it out.

synu··on I have reached Vim nirvana
Vim enlightenment for me was learning to use it with all the default settings. Everywhere I go, it’s already set up just the way I like it.
synu··on Study finds AI assistants help developers produce code likely to be buggy
How will they be able to keep purely AI-generated outputs from being fed back in as inputs? That seems hard to separate out once it’s published and not attributed. The ability of AI to generate lots of output means it might swamp human or cyborg outputs when looking at the corpus of publicly searchable code (or blog posts, or whatever the training data is for the case in question).

Maybe a GAN to detect and filter out AI-generated content? Not sure if that’s possible or not.

synu··on Study finds AI assistants help developers produce code likely to be buggy
The next AIs will be trained on vast swathes of low-quality AI-generated outputs, if they are trained on public data again. Presumably people will have to come up with ways to work around that or the AI will be training to produce outputs like a low quality AI.

By low quality I just mean the state of the outputs today, which are incredible for what they are, but are definitely not the pinnacle of what is in theory possible.

synu··on “Magic: The Gathering” is officially the world’s most complex game
Is the outcome of a game of Diplomacy computable?
synu··on Study finds AI assistants help developers produce code likely to be buggy
You’ll need to pair it up with a super fast laser printer to be able to get it all properly code reviewed.
synu··on Study finds AI assistants help developers produce code likely to be buggy
One in ten turns being told to do the wrong thing sounds incredibly annoying. Maybe if you’re driving on the highway for long stretches, but otherwise that would be awful.
synu··on Customer service reps for Disney and Airbnb who have to pay to take calls (2020)
Having been poor and worked for these kinds of companies, they tell wonderful stories about how much money you can make. They don’t tell anyone that they structure the work so that almost nobody makes anything approaching what’s theoretically possible.

The companies don’t care, extracting cheap labor as they churn through their victims is part of the business model.

synu··on Ruby 3.2.0
They clearly haven’t read the HN comments about Ruby
synu··on Ask HN: Why is Tesla stock dropping? Meta?
That’s fair, though isn’t the combination of people who believe those things plus also want their car purchase to explicitly signal their socially conservative political views (if we assume that actually is the strategy at work here) still a niche, rather than what would otherwise be valued as the largest car company in the world?
synu··on Ask HN: Why is Tesla stock dropping? Meta?
Of the people who love culture wars and hate liberals, and yet at the same time also believe in climate change and want to buy an electric vehicle, aren’t they much more likely to buy the new electric f150?

In general this combination of beliefs seems like too small of a segment to build a company with a market cap like Tesla’s around.

synu··on I am done. I give up
Something where you make a business that takes minimal commitment so you can spend your time on the beach.

The actual business seems to be taking photos of yourself on the beach and making money as an influencer, while telling people you made money from your startup though.

At least that’s my impression. Maybe there are counter examples.

synu··on I am done. I give up
Influencers are selling a dream, which can be a part of the big picture, but you have to remember, much like the people who used to sell pamphlets on tv about how to get rich, you have to ask yourself why they are selling pamphlets instead of just doing whatever their pamphlets say.
synu··on How Pitfall builds its world (2021)
I definitely dreamed of more powerful computers, but working using libraries that wrap libraries that wrap libraries (and on and on) and never needing to think about the hardware was not something I really anticipated. There’s something nice about working with hardware and software that calling it LARPing feels dismissive. Arduinos are fun in a similar way and aren’t medieval.
synu··on Amsterdam's 'stay away' campaign targets troublesome visitors
Why would the locals be happy with too many party tourists, but only as long as they sleep in their cars out in front of their houses and not in hotels? I’m not following the connection.
synu··on The golden age of streaming TV is over
I have a blue ray dvd player and the quality seems.. fine. I don’t really know. It’s quiet as well, and I always put my dvds away where they go.

And anyway, it’s not really competing with Netflix since I sort of gave up on Netflix because it didn’t reliably carry most of my favorite movies and tv shows. It’s a choice between loading a dvd or not being able to watch it, not between loading a dvd vs clicking on Netflix. I’m in Europe so the selection is even worse.

synu··on The golden age of streaming TV is over
This may not work for everyone, but I’m quite happy again with dvds so I can watch what I want when I like.
synu··on Promotion of alternative social platforms policy
Thanks for the advice, I’ll give it a shot.
