symplee··on Graph Toy, an interactive graph visualizer using mathematical functions
This is awesome!

Anyone discover any cool graphs to share?

For example, the simplest one producing something interesting I've found so far is:

  t%x
Which creates a growing jagged triangular graph when you press "play" for the "t" constant.

Naturally, this can be built upon to make weirder and weirder graphs, ex:

  sin(t%x)
symplee··on 1MW Molten-Salt Test Reactor by Copenhagen Atomic for €88k [video]
Gotta love the "Customers also viewed these products" section on that page, for example:

"Salt Block Grilling: 70 Recipes for Outdoor Cooking with Himalayan Salt Blocks"

symplee··on Ask HN: Successful one-person online businesses?
Looks cool, thanks for sharing.

Just a quick feedback note, under the "free tutorials" section, I scrolled passed the images thinking they were just gifs. Then got to the bottom of the page thinking, "Hmm, It really would have been helpful if he included an example video..." Then scrolled back to the top and through all the content again to see if I missed something. I tried hovering over the "gif" and then realized it was a link to YouTube.

Long story short, I think it would help the reader to have a "play button" or small icon overlayed on the image to indicate that it's a playable video, or (better?) embed the YouTube video directly in that space so the user doesn't have to leave the page.

Hope this helps, but open to feedback if I'm just an outlier. You can try the change in an A/B test, and see if the conversion rate goes up for people who visit the site AND watch an example video.

symplee··on Google's penalty against The Online Slang Dictionary
There's https://millionshort.com/

> The search engine, which brands itself as “more of a discovery engine,” allows users to filter the top million websites on the internet out of their search, resulting in a unique set of results and placing an emphasis on content discovery. This approach to search is also designed to combat the impact that aggressive black and grey hat SEO practices have on mainstream search results.[0]

symplee··on Book of Lost Books Discovered in Danish Archive (2019)
Extraordinary find! (While also heartbreaking to read that so many literary works have been lost.)

symplee··on Recycling was a lie to sell more plastic, recycling industry veteran says
This may be a dumb question, but is there really a "yup that conspiracy actually happened" book? Not literally a book with that title, but is there some resource that has a list of these?

symplee··on Controllable Video Sprites That Appear Like Professional Tennis Players
I wonder if players will be able to use this to prepare for opponents. For example, knowing where to hit and "seeing how they typically react" and then predicting where they'll most likely to return the ball.

If so, this could be expanded to other sports, maybe even team sports, where you can test set plays against the simulated defense.

symplee··on Traffic Prediction with Advanced Graph Neural Networks
Is it just me, or is it a little disingenuous to write the claim "...improve the accuracy of real time ETAs by up to 50% in places like Berlin, Jakarta, São Paulo, Sydney, Tokyo, and Washington D.C."

When the actual numbers listed for those cities are:

  Berlin - 21%
  Jakarta - 22%
  São Paulo - 23%
  Sydney - 43%
  Tokyo - not listed
  Washington D.C. - 29%

symplee··on Writing a software book and making over $100k
Very cool resource.

Have you thought about adding the scale of the author's following and/or social media presence?

For example, this story's author has 21,000 followers on Twitter, and a successful blog.

Another example is 200k in sales https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23502770 where the self-publishing author admitted that practically all sales were due to 35,000 Twitter followers.

Have you come across an example of a successful book launch where an (unknown) author didn't already have a large following?

symplee··on How I made $3,300 on a short niche philosophy book
I'm sure it doesn't hurt to have 35,000 followers :)

I've noticed a trend that these success stories usually flow out of an already existing user base.

Does anyone have any success stories from someone with no social media presence?

Can this freaky A.I. also generate the corresponding unit tests?

Or, for TDD, generate the unit tests first based on the function name and description. Then, if the dev updates any of those tests, or adds more tests, use that information in auto generating the appropriate code.

symplee··on Modern universities are an exercise in insanity (2018)
Does anyone have an actual cost breakdown of every expense that goes into running a university? It would be great to see this for any major private college, and/or a public university.

In most of these comment sections I see speculation about why universities are so expensive. But have never seen the hard data to back it up. Is it really the luxury dorms? The bloated administration? etc... Anyone have the real numbers? And how has the budget breakdown changed over time?

symplee··on Ask HN: What's your quarantine side project?
Nice!

I like how at first it just shows the headlines/articles. Then, if you want, you can toggle the "show bias" switch.

Have you thought about an option to gamifying it a little bit by letting the user guess which direction the headline leans? And then revealing the direction and the news source.

For example, when the "enable bias guessing" switch is toggled, there's a slider that appears on the bottom of the headline. Or, simpler, just two buttons that say left, right. You can guess all of the headlines on the whole page, then reveal and see how you did.

symplee··on GitHub Codespaces
(Serious question) I'm curious to hear more about "ruthlessly optimizing" your emotional environment and relationships. That is not something heard everyday...

Or if you'd prefer not to personally summarize, are there any books, articles, videos, etc, you can recommend that expand on this overall life philosophy?

symplee··on Firefox 76
I can corroborate this. YouTube especially.

Does anyone have any hard numbers to validate this? Or are we just random outliers?

symplee··on Ask HN: Are we downvoting comments because we disagree?
LOL ohhh the irony... Why is this flagged?

symplee··on Young and middle-aged people, barely sick with Covid-19, are dying from strokes
Did the earliest victims of Covid19 also show similar levels of clots? Or are we only seeing elevated levels recently? Could help to plot this over time as the lockdown extends. If there's a correlation, would help to stress the importance of staying active in quarantine, ex: lifting, stationary bike, jump rope.
symplee··on Young and middle-aged people, barely sick with Covid-19, are dying from strokes
And maybe also dietary changes due to lockdown: Higher sodium, more preservatives, less fruit and vegetables. Less trips to grocery store means buying more food that has a longer shelf-life than people would normally be eating.
