swiley··on Facebook and Snapchat iOS Apps Still Tracking Users Despite Opt-Out
Well, I've found and read the source for the DSP part. The small OS on the modem processor on my current phone actually is open source, and hardly use the modem anyway since I've switched to VOIP for voice and SMS/MMS.
swiley··on Why I stopped releasing EasyOS as an ISO file
>Installing Windows on actual hardware and not just running a VM with virGL.
swiley··on Pixel prevented me from calling 911
This isn't the first time I've heard this complaint.

> Google needs to support their own phone past three years

It's not really Google's choice. Qualcomm gives up on their SOCs pretty quickly and unlike on Linux Android's license doesn't force them to publish driver sources.

swiley··on Pixel prevented me from calling 911
People who argue Android is superior to PMOS take note.
swiley··on Pixel prevented me from calling 911
>We are currently only aware of one user report related to the occurrence of this bug.

Sounds about par for the Android team's awareness of what a steaming pile of cow dung their OS is. I gave up on Android long ago and I'm aware of many reports like this.

swiley··on Why aren't thousands of gigabytes of abusive images removed from the web?
I've gotten emails from people asking for help hosting image albums. I'd be shocked if their end goal wasn't hosting CP. (I rejected it of course.)

Do not run closed consumer software ever.
swiley··on Young Dems more likely to despise the other party
Some of us feel the same way about the positions of the democrat party.
swiley··on WhatsApp has removed answer to “how do I choose not to share data with FB”
Whatsapp is just signal 10 years from now, I'd rather move the world to something not controlled by one company like XMPP.
swiley··on Simple Raspberry Pi Powered SMS Gateway
No.

That would take value add away from apple et all.

Install Xorg.

swiley··on Amazon is bypassing supply chain chaos with chartered ships and long-haul planes
Eventually people will be paying yachtsmen to move totes.
swiley··on Tshwane District Omicron Variant Patient Profile – Early Features
The admins have had two years to fix staffing/equipment shortages. If they're still struggling it's not the public that should suffer.
swiley··on Tshwane District Omicron Variant Patient Profile – Early Features
>Just two more weeks
swiley··on Apple broke up with me
Hopefully more people notice these problems and stop using online services so much.
swiley··on Buried in Infrastructure Bill Is a Mandatory Backdoor Kill Switch for Your Car
This is why I bought a sailboat. All you can do is put computers on her; There's a real limit to how much you can make her function dependent on other people's code.
swiley··on Tell HN: Lost then regained access to Google account, with correct credentials
Yup. This happened to me two years ago. Thankfully I hardly used them for anything important. They started freaking me out years ago and I've moved to self host everything.

People still send emails to my gmail address, including my own family. It forwards to swiley.net for now but that probably won't last.

swiley··on Windows urges users to use Bing same way as urgent security warnings
System software gives you a ton of control over the user. It's easy to say "oops that doesn't work" when they use apps that don't make you money or give you more control. With an app the user would just install something else but switching OSes means work, not just installation but adopting the differing paradigms.
swiley··on Windows urges users to use Bing same way as urgent security warnings
Have you tried editing text files on iOS and copying them to another machine without an online service? On every other OS you have OpenSSH and some text editor installed already, on iOS the easiest thing to do is install iSH but it's still pretty painful since it's slow and can't see everything.
swiley··on Web4 Should Run on LaTeX
Exactly, HTML would be amazing if people weren't trying to use browsers as application runtime environments.
swiley··on Ask HN: Do FAANG and hire designer developers?
One of the companies I worked for did. They would always make these vary pretty mockups that would be hell for people to use.

Information density is ugly and it makes software hard to sell. This is part of why commercial software is almost universally crap.

swiley··on Reddit.com has deleted AAAA records and is back to being a legacy website
A type DNS records are used for looking up IPv4 addresses, AAAA records are for IPv6. This effectively takes Reddit off of the IPv6 internet and is a bit of a step backward.
swiley··on The Navy is testing a GPS-like device that doesn’t require satellites
We already had a system that didn't need satellites, it was deemed redundant and shut down.
swiley··on Why WHO skipped 2 Greek letters to name new variant ‘Omicron’
They're more a PR organization than one driven by science at this point.
swiley··on Microsoft pushes ahead with controversial ‘buy now, pay later’ feature for Edge
Most mainstream things are like this now.
swiley··on Remote Work Is Failing Young Employees
Don't forget, this is the same newspaper that mocked Robert Goddard for wanting to go to other planets because "rockets don't work in space."
swiley··on I faked tons of Covid passes – “Weak Key Cryptography in real world”
More likely smart enough not to.
swiley··on The Paywalled Garden: iOS is Adware (2020)
iOS apps are how you add notifications to your website.
swiley··on Save the planet Program in C, avoid Python, Perl
The compilers, runtimes, and by extension requisite operating systems are fatter though.
