swampthinker··on Rural Kansas is dying
I think a big deciding factor is kids/age. I'm young and still prefer the city life, so 1 college just isn't going to cut it for me.
swampthinker··on San Francisco’s Seismic Gamble
My understanding is that the way buildings collapse in Hollywood is not how they collapse in reality. If the base of the structure begins to fail, it doesn't fall over as a tower, but crumbles into itself.

Edit: Sorry, I shouldn't have said "you". I don't know your situation or how much you make, this is a very broad rant that is based off of previous discussions I've had.

This has to be the most pretentious thing I read in a while. You get paid 6-figures with incredible benefits, while making 2-3x of what the median HOUSEHOLD in this country makes[1], with one of the highest average base salaries, and your individual income ceiling is approximately $180-$200k.

All of this, without having to risk your health like many other blue collar jobs.

All of this, attainable very quickly after graduating college (if you even get to graduating).

Feel free to demand the amount of money you think you deserve. I do think programmers are underpaid for the value they create. But don't make it seem like engineers are lowly serfs or something of that ilk. You have it so much better than most Americans.

Those numbers are even more impressive given that 2 years ago they had $600m in revenues with a net loss of $300m
swampthinker··on Dropbox S-1
I wouldn't be surprised if the enterprise discount is in fact <$5/u/mo. Seems like a simple conversation, "Why am I paying more per person even though I'm a large client?"

Digging deeper into Dropbox's finances is astounding too. They've added about $150m in additional revenue each year, while cutting their net losses by $100m each year.

Wow, I assumed that Box would've had a higher ARPU given it's focus on enterprise.
swampthinker··on Tokyo to build 350m tower made of wood
Airtight buildings are perfectly fine with a proper Heat recovery ventilation system (HRV) that they should be using. HRV's are mandatory when building the PassiveHaus spec.
swampthinker··on Tokyo to build 350m tower made of wood
You're right, I definitely over simplified. PT is a little bit stronger than non-PT, and I'm used to calling anything that isn't normal wood "PT" in the field.
swampthinker··on Tokyo to build 350m tower made of wood
Well I'll be damned.
swampthinker··on Tokyo to build 350m tower made of wood
Not if the lumber is pressure treated.
swampthinker··on Tokyo to build 350m tower made of wood
Very interesting! But there is quite literally zero cross-bracing in that structure, which leads me to believe this was designed by an architect and not a structural engineer.
swampthinker··on Tokyo to build 350m tower made of wood
Bricks and concrete are absolutely not the best. They have terrible insulation properties, poor sound absorption, and cost more than wood structures.

Wood is an overall superior construction material if you can use it, and I think you're misunderstanding the pressure treatment process. It's normal wood placed in a vacuum chamber so preservatives can seep into the lumber.

swampthinker··on Tokyo to build 350m tower made of wood
It's actually less about insulation and more about air sealing. A hermetically sealed home with no insulation is generally warmer than a leaky home with walls stuffed with insulation.

Also regarding wood, this isn't the kind of wood you're thinking of. It's called pressure treated lumber, and it's an order of magnitude stronger than normal wood. The lumber has preservatives injected specifically to prevent rot, insect damage, and fire resistance.

swampthinker··on Multifamily Passive House in Vancouver
Yeah, I spent more time than I care to think about lobbying for this kind of change in the States. Got practically nowhere though.
swampthinker··on Multifamily Passive House in Vancouver
Yeah it was. Europe has a lot of required home energy ratings actually, so we drew inspiration from that.
swampthinker··on Multifamily Passive House in Vancouver
My previous startup was an API that would give homes an energy efficiency letter grade along with a bill estimate to embedded in real estate websites. While it failed for a host of issues, one that stood out in my head was how little people valued efficiency over renewables.

Generally speaking, money invested in improving building efficiency will have a better carbon and financial payback than any form of solar, wind, or hydro. And yet, homeowners will get solar panels before they insulate their walls.

swampthinker··on Multifamily Passive House in Vancouver
Seems like there was too much glazing (windows and doors) on the south side. It's a problem that a lot of glass skyscrapers face right now as well. They have so much solar heat gain that the AC will be running on a warm spring day just to stop the inside from getting hot.
