surfsvammel··on Mom handcuffed, jailed for 8-year-old son walking half a mile
What kind of neighbourhood isn’t safe for an 8 year old to walk 800m? This makes me sad.
surfsvammel··on Crypto exchange AAX suspends withdrawals
I know nothing about the world of crypto currencies, but I do know finance.

The exchange does not hold the trades instruments/currencies/securities as assets. The business of a normal exchange is normally risk free (just matching buyers to sellers). Some exchanges step in as middle man in the trades, a process that I believe is called novation of the trade. The original trade between the buyer and the seller is novated, transformed into two trades, both against the exchange, one for each party and opposite direction. In this case the main risk is counterparty risk, the risk that one of the counterparties fail in some way.

An exchange never holds its own positions.

What is the difference in these cases? Have the crypto exchanges somehow used their users cryptosecurities as assets?

surfsvammel··on ‘Dark ships’ emerge from the shadows of the Nord Stream mystery
Dark ships? If this was Russias doing, or the US, why not send submarines to do something like this?

I don’t buy it.

surfsvammel··on Swedish amateur archivist “Rosa Mannen” shut down from YouTube again
SVT is public service TV in Sweden. SvtPlay their online streaming service.

Lots of opinions about SVT (as there should be, it’s public!) but if you ask me, it’s super high quality and it’s something that I’m very proud of, as someone from Sweden.

surfsvammel··on Ask HN: Comment here about whatever you're passionate about at the moment
I usually tell people that I am passionate about technology. I don’t know if that is true anymore. Ever since the pandemic hit, something has changed.

I used to be passionate about wave surfing. That was all that I could think of. Now, I have not been in the water since my first kid was born six years ago. I need to change that. I need to go surfing again.

Oh. And hello from Sweden, by the way. I’m very much a real person. I am one of those people you met in the early days of Quake, when you thought “there is a real person behind everyone of those!”

surfsvammel··on Seeking the productive life: Some details of my personal infrastructure (2019)
That’s not true, you should try it. My full attention is on the call. Walking the trail, as it’s also the same trail everyday, is fully on autopilot.

Really. Your comment kind of annoys me because it seems you have no experience of this, while I have several years experience of it, yet you are sure that you know better than me what my experience of it is?

Edit: Also, my teams know about it and all agree with it, some of them do walks themselves.

surfsvammel··on Seeking the productive life: Some details of my personal infrastructure (2019)
There are not that many other people. And, it’s not like I am lecturing. I’m having conversations in meetings. I speak about 1/7 of the time. Most of the time I’m on mute.

If I run in to someone, I politely say hello, and that’s that.

surfsvammel··on Seeking the productive life: Some details of my personal infrastructure (2019)
I mean. This is a forrest. I barely run in to anybody. It’s not a park.

I’m on mute most of the time anyway, I speak maybe 1/7 of the time on the calls. If I meet anyone in the forrest, I politely say hello to them, and that’s that.

surfsvammel··on Seeking the productive life: Some details of my personal infrastructure (2019)
For the last year or so I have scheduled my two status meetings back to back in the mornings. That means I have 90 minutes of walking in the forrest in the morning (30min before the meetings and then 30min each for the two meetings).

I have two teams reporting to me, and each have a 30minute morning meeting where we decide what needs the team attention during the day. There is also room for small talk to keep it a bit social.

Those meetings do not need screensharing very often. When they do, we can manage to look briefly at a phone screen.

It has been wonderful and it is something I would miss if I ever had another job. I encourage the others in the team to do the same thing.

Walking in the forrest have two benefits; less risk of getting hit by a car, and, it’s more quiet of a background for when I unmute.

Highly recommended!

surfsvammel··on Only virgin type of olive oil consumption reduces the risk of mortality: study
Nice. How would one go about finding such suggestion for consumption in Europe?
surfsvammel··on Remote work has been a boon for night owls
Oh how I wish that I could sleep until 08:59 A.M.

During the pandemic, when part of India was on lockdown, I had to go up very early to cover for our Indian team not being available. I started work at 05:00 A.M. and got up half an hour before that. It was tough in the beginning, but after some time I started to really enjoy it. I have my home office window towards the woods, and waking up when the forrest was most active, was inspiring. Every day I would share the morning with different animals.

surfsvammel··on Show HN: I made a new AI colorizer
This is magic… How the heck does it know that the walls of my home gym is light green?!?

Impressive!

surfsvammel··on Disposable Root Servers
I might use this just for convenience if I need to test something away from my home network.
surfsvammel··on Vogtle Unit 3 starts nuclear fuel load
How interesting. An actual delimiter/locale issue happening IRL. I exclusively see them in code.
surfsvammel··on 'We don’t have enough' lithium globally to meet EV targets, mining CEO says
Well that’s because he comes from mining. We have plenty of lithium in the oceans waiting to get harvested. We also have the technology to harvest lithium from the oceans.
surfsvammel··on Almost half of cancer deaths are caused by smoking, alcohol, or obesity
"In 2019, half of all male deaths from cancer, and more than one-third in women, were due to preventable risk factors including tobacco and alcohol use, unhealthy diets, unsafe sex and..."

How does unsafe sex cause cancer? What is unsafe sex in this context?

surfsvammel··on Why a Zimbabwean firm offers pensions denominated in cows
So. When you retire, and stop working at your current job, you get cows and you now have a new job… I do hope cows are liquid assets in Zimbabwe in the future.
surfsvammel··on Swarming drones autonomously navigate a dense forest
Super cool! Hope we can use this technology to look for missing people.
surfsvammel··on Show HN: Find the 10 highest and 10 lowest correlations to any stock
Correlation between assets change over time. Predicting what the correlation will be in the future is important for asset managers.

I am supervising a master thesis project (in fact the second such project on the matter) where we are trying to predict the covariance matrix of a portfolio of assets using machine learning. Results are promising!

surfsvammel··on I put my whole life into a single database
I collected a lot of data on my life, and tried to analyse it. The learnings that I got out of it was very non-surprising. Basically, if I slept 8h and I worked out regularly, I was happier and had more energy. That was basically the only two things that really stood out amongst all the factors I tracked.
surfsvammel··on Vim Color Schemes
I went gruvbox some years ago and now cannot live without it. I’m using a base16 variant of it.
surfsvammel··on The origin story of our new ortholinear keyboard
Moonlander LEDs can be enabled or disabled as you please.

I have LEDs disabled by default, but then enable LEDs for certain key buttons on different layers to make them easier to find.

I love my Moonlander, but don’t have much other split ones to compare with.

surfsvammel··on The origin story of our new ortholinear keyboard
This looks interesting. But will that design for tenting really work? It looks like it would buckle as soon as you lay your hand on them.
surfsvammel··on Logging at Twitter
I use Splunk daily. Splunk is awesome. Splunk sis ridiculously expensive :(
surfsvammel··on Controlling the nuclear fusion plasma in a tokamak with reinforcement learning
I agree. But I’m old fashioned. I would never dream of going into the office without a collared shirt.
surfsvammel··on The Unreasonable Math of Type 1 Diabetes
My thoughts on reading this article: 1. Damn. I’m so happy that my kids don’t have to go through this. 2. This person is the perfect dad for this situation. If I was his kid, he is exactly what I’d want as my dad.
surfsvammel··on Ask HN: Why should I trust password managers?
I run a self-hosted instance of a Bitwarden compatible server. It’s only available locally on my local network. So, when out and about, I VPN back home.

Not sure it’s the best way to do it, security wise, but it’s what I found works for me in a security/convenience trade-off

surfsvammel··on A simple system I’m using to stay in touch with hundreds of people
I have a very similar system. I use Trello. I have one column called 1M, one called 3M, one called 6M (representing how often I want to reach out to them). Each card is one person and the cards have a field on them that is called: Last Contact. Every week, or so, I have a look at the Trello board. I look at the top cards in each column and if it’s time to reach out, I do so, update the Last Contact field, and move that card to the bottom of that column.

Sometimes I add notes to the cards.

That’s it!

Edit; The reason I don’t have one big list, is that I’ve gotten a sense of how long each list can be for it to be manageable.

surfsvammel··on A 1970s boardgame takes about 1,500 hours to complete
Why would the length of the campaign deter you from playing it? Isn't it great if you know you have enough content to play the game for the next 20 years?

I play Gloomhaven with friends. Since we live in different parts of the country, we only meet up to play twice a year to play. It will take us years to complete Gloomhaven. It's awesome. It means we can just keep playing long into our retirements (at which point we might meet and play more often!)

surfsvammel··on Why does my diet soda taste off? Aspartame hydrolysis
I believe my kids have a similar situation. They have been really picky with food since COVID. We actually talked to a paediatrician (is that what they are called?) about it. He said it seemed to be very common right now.

Also suggested that we should try to give the kids lots of different tastes, textures, temperatures etc. I guess to “train” the sense again? I don’t know. Seems a bit unscientific. But who knows.
