surfsvammel··on Delayed Gratification – Proud to Be 'Last to Breaking News'
I used to be a subscriber of Delayed Gratification. And I really enjoyed it. But, I’m based in Sweden and it was just too much UK focused stuff for my liking.
surfsvammel··on EEG shows brain can simultaneous encode two speech streams
This is something that has been studied and is apparently more common when reading out loud. I have this as well. I can read to my kids and at the same time plan the upcoming day. Pretty neat!
surfsvammel··on Never argue with your boss (2009)
Seems to be very dependant on culture at the workplace.

Sure, I agree, for when I worried in for example Singapore, I would not agree for Scandinavia

surfsvammel··on Apple's weird anti-nausea dots cured my car sickness
It works for me too. Simple yet effektive.
surfsvammel··on The curious case of low-protein diets
I don't know. Is there really a signal here when it comes to humans? It seems most of the arguments come from one study? Would be interesting to hear those here at HN that are smarter than me comment on this one.
surfsvammel··on Return of the Obra Dinn: spherical mapped dithering for a 1bpp first-person game
I absolutely loved this game. I still think about it often, the story and the characters. I wish there was more games like it.

Interesting read!

surfsvammel··on The mushroom making people hallucinate tiny humans
In my youth I experimented with hallucinogenic drugs. Having shared hallucinations are very easy. It often just requires that someone give you an idea of a hallucination, or someone tells you what they see, and your brain will make you see it as well.

Maybe people know these things make you see small people, and then they are primed to do so.

surfsvammel··on Scientists find a way to regrow cartilage in mice and human tissue samples
My dream is to be able to run again. Please. Let me run a 10k at least once more in my life. To feel that stillness and freedom and calm that sets in when the brain start going to hibernation after about 7km.

That would be quiet something to feel that again.

surfsvammel··on Ask HN: Best Podcasts of 2025?
The SGU. There is only one podcast that I always come back to! https://www.theskepticsguide.org/podcasts
surfsvammel··on Ask HN: What skills do you want to develop or improve in 2026?
I want to:

- Hone my motorcycle riding skills. Curves, breaking and the rest.

- Learn and manage to do some basic home renovation stuff by myself.

- Learn the basics for keeping a garden.

- Start playing table tennis

surfsvammel··on GLP-1 drugs linked to lower death rates in colon cancer patients
I don’t know! Think I’ve seen a headline somewhere, but can’t remember where. Quick search should help you :)

To me, it’s anecdotal, of course, but I have same sense of being in control over alcohol intake as food intake.

Basically makes it much easier for me to avoid binging.

surfsvammel··on GLP-1 drugs linked to lower death rates in colon cancer patients
I don’t agree. They are not saying that.

It’s observational. They are saying they see correlation.

Your suggested mechanism is plausible, and likely, of course, but that might only be part of the effect.

I think it’s still valuable findings and can help direct further studies.

surfsvammel··on GLP-1 drugs linked to lower death rates in colon cancer patients
I am on GLP-1 (very low dose), and I’ve found that it seems to help me moderate my alcohol consumption as well. Maybe some thing like that could also be contributing to the effect.
surfsvammel··on The AirPods Pro 3 flight problem
I have this exact problem, my colleague does not. I also noticed yawning helped. I gave my old AirPods to my ex :( I miss them.
surfsvammel··on Intermittent fasting strategies and their effects on body weight
I diet, on and off. Keeping fat free weight as the highest priority (I don’t want to loose hard earned muscle)!

I’ve tried all types of diets. For me, the most important for me is to save the biggest meal for late in the day. I can easily go hungry a couple of hours during the day if I know there is a filling meal coming.

I suspect IF works in a similar way.

surfsvammel··on Europe is breaking its reliance on American science
Yes. Very similar actually. Most of Europe is increasing spending on military defence.
surfsvammel··on Nintendo announces the Switch 2 [video]
I love the Switch and will love the Switch 2. But this video feels so cheap. Didn’t enjoy the launch video at all.
surfsvammel··on Undersea power cable linking Finland and Estonia suffers damage
According to an interview with people from the company that owned this particular cable (from Swedish media SVT) these things happen by accident sometimes, they said a couple of times per decade. They themselves did not think this was an accident.
surfsvammel··on Two never-before-seen tools, from same group, infect air-gapped devices
Why would a QR be more safe from containing malware than another medium like USB drive?

Is it just that the amount of data it holds is more constrained?

surfsvammel··on Researchers identify major driver of inflammatory bowel and related diseases
Anyone got a link for the actual study paper?
surfsvammel··on Researchers identify major driver of inflammatory bowel and related diseases
I have IBD. Any sensible doctor will tell you that there seem to be no link between diet and IBD, apart from certain food possibly aggravating symptoms.

No use whatsoever to blame oneself for something like this.

surfsvammel··on Ask HN: What are your oldest "online" accounts still in use?
My first mail in my gmail account is 20 years old. Not sure if that is my oldest account though.
surfsvammel··on FSRS: A modern, efficient spaced repetition algorithm
I don’t know. I’m through about 100 cards. I’ll let you know in a couple of months:)
surfsvammel··on FSRS: A modern, efficient spaced repetition algorithm
It’s not TP, it’s a Swedish game called När då då.

The image is on the back of the card, with the answer. So trying to recall the year, I don’t get to see the picture. But, the picture is the first thing that comes to mind when I get the question and the from it I get the year.

surfsvammel··on FSRS: A modern, efficient spaced repetition algorithm
I’ve learned tens of thousands of foreign language words using Anki and have always find that having pictures on the cards help me remember the words.

I currently have a (foolish?) project. I’m trying to memorize the 750 cards of a quiz game that we play in the family. All questions are answered by a year. So for example: “What year did Coca Cola Light come out?”.

I have been using Midjourney to generate images for those cards which makes it so much eaaier to recall.

I have a system. I have a person representing each century; Einstein is 1900-2000 and for example Mari-Antoinette is 1700-1800. Then items represent the decade; a sixties car represent the sixties, jacket with shoulder pads the eighties and so on.

I do something similar for the last digit.

Then I have Midjourney generate such pictures, in a comic book style, and I save the most fun or absurd one and use that on the back side of the Anki card.

The image is often easier to recall than the year by itself

surfsvammel··on Omegle 2009-2023
I’m a huge fan of rap freestyler Harry Mack. He has used Omegle to do incredible freestyle raps for random people. I guess that is now over :(
surfsvammel··on Ask HN: Can you take more than 2 consecutive weeks of vacation?
I have 30 days of vacation in my contract and I am free to use them whenever I want. It is also backed with the legal right to 4 weeks of consecutive vacation during Jun-Aug, a right that the employer cannot deny. Of course I live in Scandinavia. Sweden to be precise.
surfsvammel··on Are colonoscopies worth it?
No. This is not a good idea. You are not supposed to eat stuff. The whole point is to empty out your system. It would not be great to be half way through the procedure when they say: “oh. Here is a bunch of M&Ms, we can’t see anything. We need to redo this procedure in a week. And this time don’t eat stuff…”
surfsvammel··on Are colonoscopies worth it?
I do regular colonoscopies because of a condition. People are worried about the procedure, as I was my first times. Here are some things that I wish someone had told me:

- Taking the meds for cleaning out your system the day before is far worse than the procedure itself.

- Have a lollipop to stick in your mouth after Each time you take a shot of the laxatives. It helps with the vile taste of it.

- If you need relaxing meds or something for the pain and discomfort, they have good stuff handy when doing the procedure.

- It only ever hurts if your colon are in bad shape. Colonoscopy doesn’t hurt if you are healthy (and even if it does, they have meds for the pain).

- Don’t be embarrassed, the hospital staff do this all the time. They don’t really care about the things you are worried that they might care about.

- Wear loose fitting clothes that are easy to change in and out of when you go to the hospital.

- Try to relax.

surfsvammel··on Are colonoscopies worth it?
People here talking about you deciding whether or not you got cancer from the colour of your stool. Here is another piece of medical advice:

If you have blood in your stool, see a doctor. Period.
